How does your greenhouse hold up in the wind?
Paul
Portable Greenhouse
I'm in Texas -- very windy. No problem whatsoever. It has long stakes driven into the ground and guy lines on both sides. One evening I was out there working and I thought it was going to blow away, the wind was about 45-50 mph, but it didn't budge. It even survived a few months this winter with no guy lines on the North side -- a horse got loose and broke them. Didn't have a problem...
Looking great, all of it! Your house is made of stone! I love that look. Such room. I wish I had such a big yard. How can you be retired? You look 20!
I have a hoophouse also. I let the plastic hang long on the bottom so I could put 2 cu bags of dirt all the way around the base. It really helped anchor it when we have our bad storms.
I can't wait to see your yard after the summer Gretchen!
Hi Kell, Thank you!!! Limestone houses are very common here. Most are white or pale yellow (my favorite) limestone, but what the heck, I didn't choose this place, it was DH's. The top half needs to be painted desperately in a color more befitting the rock...one of these days.
I retired from my career in the financial field to run our little horse operation for my DH a couple of months after we got married in 2002. Shortly after that he got sick... I can promise you that I never worked this hard when I was gainfully employed LOL! Anyway, thanks for the compliment! I'm 44...
Topsoil is coming today. With any luck will have more pictures to post this evening :)
Gretchen that looks good. I love seeing raked soil without a weed to be seen. Just makes you want to plant it up!
Sue
Thanks Sue -- I can't wait! Going to put the soaker hoses in tomorrow, then a layer of mulch, then I'll be ready to go with the perennials...
Gretchen, you are quite a little worker. Your yard is going to be beautiful next Summer. Hope I get to see it in person.
Thank you. Sylvia! You stop by, anytime :)
That's looking great. What do you have planted next to it?
I can't wait to get mine up. The snow has melted, all except for some places where there were either very deep drifts, or it was plowed into small mountains.... grin.
Now were dealing with flash flood conditions, so I'll have to wait until it drys out a bit.
Gretchen, that looks really good. What have you planted in that bed? Spring/summer is going to be exciting for you.
Sue
Thank you, Sue! Oh just a bunch of salvias. All different kinds, so that hopefully if the frost comes again they will survive. I will plant flowers next month :)
Gretchen, you are going to have to post a pic when they are in flower so I can swoon over them - especially as we may well be trading in the fall!!
Sue
Oh sure thing Sue...its an ongoing work in progress, that I will continue to update.
Gretchen,
I hope you keep posting pictures. It's amazing to watch the progress (and all the work) you are making in your yard.
It will be quite a site when it's all blooming. Did I see some Castor Beans behind the Greenhouse?
I love the little plant support with the Star at the top.
Thanks, TC! Yes, I will continue to do so as it grows. Considering that my DH just used our immediate yard as another horse pasture as needed, and had absolutely nothing planted anywhere, its starting to look a little more "lived in". The past few days I spread the first of two dumptruck loads of mulch, so that was another milestone! Yes, several castor beans that were started from seeds in the GH, and I used to collect "Texas Stars". Tonight is supposed to be our last cold night, so tomorrow the brugs are coming out to be planted - Yea!
Gretchen,
Where are you going to put your Brugs? I'm new to Brugs and only have a couple small ones, but I can't wait to see if I can get them to grow. I sure hope I manage to see a few blooms this summer.
TC: Mostly in the beds on the east and north of my house. I'm going to put a few on the side of the GH too. I've never grown them in the ground, so it will be interesting... The versicolors are going to be sunk in their pots, the rest are going to be planted in the hope that they over winter and come back next Spring. Its a big experiment LOL! I plan to take cuttings of my favorites to over winter in the GH...
Hi Gretchen. You've been planting like mad since the last set of pics and it's really looking good. I too noticed the castor bean plant - I have 2 but unfortunately our climate in Ireland means they won't go out for a while yet. What have you planted along the path/drive (the narrower beds)? You have done wonders with it all and I can't wait to see it in bloom.
Sue
Thanks Sue! Here is a thread with an update as of yesterday, when I planted 52 Brugmansias!

Have a great day, both of you!!!
Gretchen - your drive is going to look fantastic. You really are an inspiration.
Sue
Well...it won't let me add any more pictures to this thread!
Gretchen,
It's starting to fill in so wonderfully. I hope you start another thread with more pictures of the progress.
Kaufmann Just got through going through your pictures, It likes like you have done a great job, and are really enjoying your GH. My husband and I are talking about putting up a small greenhouse, hope we enjoy it as much as you..
