A new invention - The Bulb Lifter

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Here's the perfect solution to those expensive bulbs that have to be lifted in the autumn. It's a new invention called The Bulb Lifter. You place the bulb in the Bulb Lifter and sink the whole thing in the ground. When the season is over, simply lift on the handle and out the bulb comes - ready to be stored for next year. Two extras make this invention especially nice, too. First, it helps keep critters from eating your bulb and it also has a tag attached to the handle so you can identify your bulbs easier.

It's not on the market yet, though. Why, you ask? Well, it so happens that this new invention was created by my daughter, Bethany, for this year's Invention Fair. It won, too, and is being sent to the regional competition. :)

Here's a picture of Bethany testing her new invention. :)

I went to town to get supplies for the handy man and pop for Jack this afternoon and ended up at WalMart. They had some really good sales on women's clothes so I broke down and bought some for myself. 3 pairs of capri pants that hit me almost at the ankle because my legs are so short for $7, $7, & $3, and two co ordinating sleeveless tops for $1 each. I'm seriously thinking of going back in a little bit to see what else I can get myself off the clearance racks.

It rained here this afternoon-about a 1/2" in the gauge. I guess we needed it. It sure put a crimp in the yardening plans for us. I need to see if Tim got the canna dug like I ask him to do. I was just leaving as he was getting here this morning. He has a list of most of what we need done tho so me not being here isn't a problem.

I went to Lowe's for some garbage cans to put the potting soils in and checked out prices and availability of the kind of kitchen sink I think I want. Then I checked out more details about the shower I'm definately interested in getting for the big bathroom.

Kyle is home and needs supper so I need to go get him fed.
GOD bless and keep each and all of you.

Congratulations Bethany!!! Quite a clever girl you've got there. Great picture.

She has a good idea there.

Great idea Bethany. Your Mom has every right to be proud of you.

another option that I use but only to stop different cultivars mixing is to plant them in waterlily pots which start at 4 inch square and larger

oops should have read it all. Good idea! Can I suggest a slight change? She should add a little cradle for the bulb/s to sit in.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Mark, She can't make any changes to it right now as it must remain the same for the next level of competition. Tell me, though, just what you mean by a "cradle" for the bulb to sit in. It's supported by heavy wire bent at the bottom right now.

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

The wire will cut the bulb into slices if you try and lift them before the roots die back in the summer. The cradle is like the bottom 2 inches of a 4 inch waterlily pot

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

It's pretty heavy gauge wire and the bulbs wouldn't be lifted until autumn anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem.

And I've never seen a waterlily pot.

That's neat! Is that a whisk she used?

Carla...you tell that beautiful daughter that I am proud of her!! She is getting prettier every day.....and just think...some day I will be able to say "I knew her when". Neat! Jo

Kimberly,

Yes, that's a whisk. :) We cut it, bent it, twisted it and more. :)

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

That looks like a good idea. Much better than digging and protects the bulbs from vermin.

Mark, I use those aqua baskets too even for bulbs like tulips with are frequently eaten on by underground tunneling critters.

they are handy. When I do my new beds and troughs all bulbs will be planted in these
