Colour Coding Standards

Northern Rivers NSW, Australia(Zone 7b)

Does anyone know if there is a colour code "standard" for descriptions in botany similar to paints. I can get 3 or 4 photos of the same bloom on the net each with a different colour. This is to do with cameras ,lenses, filters and people playing with graphic programs but is there a standard for print I.E
1 Midnight Blue
2 Gentian Blue
3 Bright Yellow
as examples. Looking forward to any response and what colour would you call this iris? John enjoying Spring in Oz.

It's a good question, and one that I tried to track down a couple years ago when we were trying to standardize the Plants Database flower colors.

Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) color system is considered the standard: http://www.crescentbloom.com/I/P/254.htm and http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/2259/art-rhs-on-monitor.htm

To order a set of chips is fairly pricey, as I recall.

Not too long ago I came across a reference to an American gardener who created a set of standard colors. Can't think of his name, and his work is fairly obscure at this point (I don't think it ever really took hold here.)

The Rose Society has their own list of colors for describing roses. (We use it in the Plants Database; I don't know if they have a color chart that they use.)
