Solar explosions

Weymouth, Dorset, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Having just watched the news, I',m not too sure that explosions is the right word, but they're saying that because of these bursts of energy from the sun,we might be in with a chance of seeing atmospheric light shows, something that in the lower half of the U.K. I've never seen, and always desperately wanted to,so I'll be watching that with interest.

The solar flare activity is high right now and the Northern light display is expected to be visible in many areas because of it. I keep hoping we will get some here but so far they say no :~( I hope you get to see them there!

I do hope so Zanymuse, I'm desperate to see them.

I hope you get to see them, too, sueone! Keep us posted and let us know, ok?
We are having too much rain here...it's been raining for days, but considering what is going on our in California, and how much they could use the rain, I won't complain...

Hi sierrawoman, I was watching it on the news last night, don't watch the news very often, it looked terrible. Must be horrible when something like that approaches you, and theres nothing you or anyone can do to stop it.
We're having our first rain too for weeks, that seems to be getting the norm for here now.
Very wet winters, then drought in the summer.I don't know about in your country, but it plays havoc with our water resevoirs,we get hosepipe bans, having to use standpipes at the worst times.
Just goes to show how we can start to take simple things for granted.

Almost all of the lakes here are experiencing a significant water level drop. The Great Lakes have reached a low-water level that it hasn't seen for a very, very long time. Part I think, can be attributed to a natural lake level cycle. But I also think there are other factors involved. Climatic changes due to global warming, the rapant filling in of our wetlands, maybe water diversion...But when the rains come (usually in the summer) there is a terrible problem with drain and sewer overflow in Traverse City, 30 miles from me...they often have to close the beaches because of runoff. It breaks my heart. During the droughts we have this system where people in the cities are supposed to alternate days for watering their yards....personally I would like to see a ban on watering altogether during droughts.

They were explaining on the news the other week, that because the ground was so hard and dry, that any rain falling just washed right over the top, so it was wasted in a sense.
i'm lucky that I live in Dorset, and we have natural resevoirs, down in the chalk, so it doesn't affect us so much.

sierrawoman, I sure agree with your thoughts of banning during drought. I live in a summer drought area, and many of my neighbors across the hiway have water rights to the creek that goes through. It's frustrating to see watering lawns when some farther down the creek have no water for gardens.

One neighbors water lines were sabatoged several times one summer.

There was a water war here some years back. I don't know the full story, I wasn't here then. But some say it was ugly.

It's another reason why I try hard to plant as many native plants as I can. They are used to the climate and seem to take living without water very well....I probably watered my garden a total of 5 times all summer. Or course, we live out in a rural area on the edge of natural springs and swamp, so we don't have much of a yard (on purpose). I think there is a real water crisis that most people don't want to admit to. I think water is too precious to spend on the vanity of having a well-kept, manicured lawn...but on the other hand, I have had to water my garden or risk loosing it to drought. I guess I just wish people would be sensible about it. It drives me nuts to drive by a business and see the automatic sprinklers on right after a rain---or worse yet, when it actually is raining!! Or how about people who have the sprinklers going and they are watering their pavement!! That's another thing that drives me nuts!!
