big question on issue

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

okay someone posted they had seeds to trade. they are here in the usa. they live here. then someone posted this:::::
From our PDB:
([HYPERLINK@plantsdatabase.com])

"The USDA classifies this plant as a Federal Noxious Weed.
Importation into the US is prohibited without a permit. It is a prohibited aquatic plant in the state of Florida, and a prohibited noxious weed in the state of Arizona.

As a Plant Protection and Quarantine Officer with the USDA, I do not recommend the distribution, planting, buying nor growing of ipomoea aquatica

Now my question is this. since it isnt being imported due to its already here. i dont know where the noxipous invasive list is to see it there but thats not my point.

can you get in trouble for trading seeds even though its already here in the Usa???? all of this is confusing to me. thanks

You may find more info here on the APHIS site http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ppq/weeds/

This is another with pretty clear terms that are for Delaware, you can look for your own state on google for similar pages.

imzadi, I'm the one who posted the warning on the other thread. I know there was some interest in the plant and just wanted to alert anyone that it's very invasive.

I have NO clue as to whether it's a problem to trade if it is already here in the US... but certainly if I was in FLA or AZ, I wouldn't trade for it.

I am unable to access the link to the PDB plant. Can someone post the link again?

i just want to know the rules. i have had one thing confiscated already and dont want another. one was out of canada. just trying to stay with the law.

if i do get this plant it will be in a pot and seed pods will be cut as i found a site that says 175-500 seeds per pod. no wonder its invasive. wow the seed pod must be enormous. thanks

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Once again, can someone repost the link to this plant, or at least tell me what plant it is?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, Aknapp! Well, at least I know it wasn't my trade list. I have some local wild plants on there that might be a problem in a friendly environment. I guess it's all relative to where you are growing plants, isn't it? One gardener's exotic is another gardener's nightmare. It's certainly food for thought, isn't it?

who wanted these kudzu cuttings again??

seriously... investigate a plant first. Most times they classify a plant as 'an invasive exotic' it is not more than plant racism... once in awhile it actually holds true.

Hi there, I posted for the trade of the Ipomoea aquatica. I guess if one didn't know it, that it could be an issue or create problems, but not too many people were interested in it, however, I think it is a curious plant and very pretty in bloom :)

I also had asked about the kudzu, I like it, have lived in GA and seen what it can do, so yes I knew all about it, but that doesn't mean that I am not a responsible person, because I have been gardening for quite the many years and so far none of my "invasives" have gotten out of my control, but then I knew they were before I planted them. I guess if they want to confiscate my stuff they can come and get it LOL Anyway, just had to answer this, I know what I grow and enjoy it. Hope this isn't creating any problems for anyone else.

Imzadi, if you grow it in a pot, you could also snip off the bloom after it is done and it shouldn't spill the seeds off everywhere where it could create a problem hope this helps ;)
