Autumn has always been my favourite season.

In Scotland, the mist covered mountains, covered with purple and white heather, and the trees of light brown, and burning red, all contrasted against a bluer than blue sky always left me speechless.

A truly wonderful sight.

Also the beautifully crisp morning air, which seemed always fresher than that of springtime, it seems so thin and frail .... beautiful

Fall is my favorite season - odd for a gardener, but I love the mists (as long as I'm in a warm room looking out and not out chasing heifers through them), I love the leaves, the late wildflowers - asters and eupatorias and, yes, even the goldenrod, I love the softness of the colors after the leaves fall and the woods take on a far away look, as if they were dreaming of some other time. Fall is the season of contemplation, time to take a deep breath and regard what has passed before taking on what is coming.

Fall is a glorious time
Rustling red yellow gold leaves blown to the ground.
Rain driven into my up Turned face, peering into the dark sunrise sky.

The smell of the marsh,the quivering retriever at my side,and the spent gunpower.

The sounds of the coyote before daylight,ducks talking to each other,the rustling of the tall grass as the bird dog runs seeking his find, the cackle of the pheasant, grouse drumming, geese migrating.

Apples to eat, little kids gathering punkins squealing with each find like it is the great prize.

If you are not or never was a hunter you may think this is nonsense and may confuse it with stupity. I ask you that are or were hunters doesn't this sound better than that of the lawnmower of summer?

I don't hunt any longer by choice but I do feed the birds and keep a couple hundred game birds as pets as repentance for the above no I just like to watch them. And this is not an EXCUSE.

Thank you Bird I am that way in nature and did not try I just rambled things I know I use to know and I still feel.

Poet Gardeners? Who better to appreciate the turning of the seasons than those who nurture the Mother Earth? In the woods I love that feeling of quiet anticipation, the feeling just before sunrise that the world is holding its breath, and then . . a new day dawns, the sun leaping joyously into the sky. The light has a muted quality, viewed through the screen of butter yellow beeches, rosegold maples and flaming oaks.

Waiting, any time now, there they are - listen to the sound of their wings, the pair of great horned owls going home to roost.

Another moment, and then THE moment, she leads her twins out into the open under the great trees; slowly, cautiously watching, as I very carefully get ready. She hears the sound of the shutter! Three tails up, liquid motion as they run a dozen yards. I whistle and she stops, head cocked as though trying to figure out what the sound is, as the auto advance runs to the end of the roll. Another hunt and one trophy - that one exposure of three white butts in the air, sailing over a deadfall. It doesn't get much better than this! I am truly blessed.

Torquay Bravo you see well. Regards Ernie

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
The Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.

--Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.

I HATE FALL!!! I DREAD EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
To me its the saddest time of the yr. :(
This month is ONE of the worst months in my life, lots of personal reasons along with the death of my garden. I stay inside till SPRING!!!

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

I like fall..right now my yard is covered in yellow..have no idea what is blooming,but it's pretty. I do miss the changing leaves. Winter is good..lots of different birds to watch. Spring is lovely with all the flowers waking up from their winter's nap. Summer is barefoot season,but I hate running the AC. Heck..each season has it's own charm and beauty.

Poor Dori. It will be all right. The nice thing about seasons is that they always change and the one you like will be back....guaranteed! ;~D

Fall is my favorite time of year. I like fall colors and the oblique lighting, and fall here is sort of like early spring in "normal" climates. I like the anticipation of Christmas and the rainy season. The brutal summer is over and it is the start of the natural growing season. The seasons are backward here. Winter and up into mid spring are the peak growing times for the natural vegetation. Stuff matures in late spring and it goes dormant in summer. The plants start to "wake up" in the fall or early winter, whenever the rain starts.

However, fall is having a hard time getting started around here. The Virginia creeper has turned red, but it's been hot as anything. Anyone who would like to send some rain or cool air this way, please, be my guest. We've had at least a week of temperatures around or above 100F and there is no end in sight. As for rain, I can't tell you the last time it rained except that it was in April or May.

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

Fall here is to finally wander the woods w/o bugs after you. The leaves change color or flutter to your feet. After a frost the sun warms to a beautiful day. Morning mist off the river leaves dew everywhere waiting for sunshine. (Actually the past 3 days have been rainy with wet snow, BLEAH) Try to get the dogs out in the rain. Frank.
