Anybody other than me have any trouble with neighbors or road goers picking up your walnuts, etc since they are falling?????? Caught a neighbor this morning with a 5 gallon bucket and he took it home and was coming back for more.....I don't mind sharing if they can ask but don't just go ahead and take them.......
Nut snatchers
I have nothing that the neighbors want (that I know of). I think that's terribly rude.
bluepoppy, you need to put up a sign that says "Walnuts - $20 a bucket, you pick up". Maybe they would take the hint that they are not free. :)
Yep I'd do the same thing! I'd put up a sign too. OR the sign can say Please ask BEFORE you pick walnuts!
We have 4 pecan trees and folks are always wanting to pick up their own.
Once I get all I want of them, they are welcome to get some but don't just help your self. good thing we have a fence up, else they would be stopping with their buckets!
Hey Molly - got all you want yet?? This would be a great thing for the swap!! Wink, Wink!
My poor old Mom lived on a corner lot in Orlando - she had 5 orange trees, 2 grapefruit trees and a big Meyers lemon tree. People were always stopping to grab her fruit! She put up a sign $3.00 a bushel, yet they stole them while she was at work. She spent a lot on fertilizer and paid a man to come and spray them too. Once when she was out of town visiting us, her trees were litterally stripped when she got home. A neighbor told her that another neighbor took some friends into her yard and took them - some neighbors!!
That's one of my pet peeves, too. These may be people who don't really see they are "stealing" as the nuts are just laying all over the ground after all. What temerity.
I'd post signs everywhere that say "Please don't steal my walnuts" and if that doesn't work, use stronger language, "No Trespassing" signs and an offer to call the cops.
ahhh Azalea, now that is a good idea!
I might just have to do that!
"The State of US has determined these trees and nuts to contain high amounts of toxin that are known to inhibit growth cells in living organisms. Please, for your own protection, keep a distance of 10 feet."
(Heheheh...doesn't say the toxin only affects the growth of plants near the root system of the tree.) (And the "State of US, refers to "us", not United States!) ;>)
I'm SUCH a bad boy! ;>)
Shoe... Yes, you ARE a bad boy!
You all are too kind with your replies.
True story. Skyway, my pit bull, when he was not quite grown up and my boxer Bonnie Blu I let out one night into our fenced in back yard (about 1 am.) When I got back into my office I looked out my the window and under my lights I saw someone trying to pull a pineapple. Next I see Bonnie and Skyway...flat out moving.
Well the end of that story was one bloody shoe. I think Bonnie is the one who got him, and Skyway ended up with the shoe. That fool also went back over the fence where we have these wild vines that go 40-60 feet into the trees. Those vine's thorns make a rose bush look like child's play. They are curved when fully grown, razor sharp and the break off into ya when you pull against them. You can take one of these thorn before they curve and with the tip of it slice yourself just like it was a razor blade. These things are nasty! Anyway he went through them he got caught up and ended up pulling down a good 10 or 12 of these vines out of the trees. The vines were laid out straight into neighbor's yard which means they just had to cut him up bad as they ripped around his person. The next morning when I looked at the vines (some of them a good 1/2 inch thick) there were not too many thorns left.
No one has ever offered again to releave me of another pineapple.

All that for a pineapple? Unbelievable.
Ouch!!
I give so much to my neighbors they would'nt think of stealing from me.
Last weekend nieces brought their kids to get pumpkins and we had a neighbor boy come to. I left to get some sunflower seeds so he could throw them to my quail. He announced to his mother and my wife that Mr Weed rocks.
I doubt those folks will ever steal from me nor tp my yard.
On the otherhand I did go out to my fir trees one afternoon and ask a woman, for her address, of about the age she should have known better. She asked me why I wanted to know so I said because I want to come and steal your property like you are doing to mine right now. Then after she said I see your point I will leave I gave her permission to continue picking up cones.
Next day when I got home from work I read a note from the housecleaner saying a nice lady said you did her a favor and wanted you to have these[several packages of poppey seeds] go figure.
