Drying Gourds

Harford County, MD(Zone 6b)

My DS called me this morning to see if I could find out the best way to dry birdhouse and dipper gourds. He's heard so many different ways. Some say to dry them on newspapers, some in cool temps, some in warm temps,etc.....
One person said to drill a couple of small holes in the top, another said,"dont". I told him someone on DG should know.
Dear cousin "Roadrunner" is still running the roads,so I can't reach her to ask how her DH did them.
Thank's a bunch..... gin

OOPS....I just noticed there's a forum for gourds and melons. How do I move this thread from here to there?

If I may make a suggestion. DON'T drill holes in them. I did this with one of the gourds that I completley cover with bees wax and beads Only to find out that some little critter had laid eggs inside the gourd and when it was sold the new owner reported that she had taken it out of the bag and found hundreds of little larve crawling around inside the bag and all over the gourd. It took quite a bit of exterminating to completely eliminate the bugs. The gourd originally sold for $465.00 when I finished the beading. It was a lesson learned and not forgotten.

There has been lots of previous discussion on drying gourds in the Forums. Here's just one link: http://davesgarden.com/t/78351/gourds

Thank you both for the info. I printed it all for him.
It sounds like they require a lot of work but I suppose the finished product makes it worth your while.
