Ok all you Daver's here, I have a rather stupid question, I am hearsick! I have been watching and watching for my morning glories and Datura's to ripen for their seed, we were hit with an unexpected frost here 2 nights ago, and eveything looks terrible (usually by frost I have things collected and yanked out) but not this year, my question is this: will those seeds still ripen? or am I wasting my time on leaving them hanging there, and should I just pull them out and be done with it? Or is there any chance at all that I can still get some good seeds from any of the mg's or datura pods???
Any and all help greatly appreciated here!
Thanks
Laurrie
Stupid FROST question
im going to guess that the seeds will still ripen! leave them hang for awhile-indian summer is coming:) I have left them hang all winter and in spring plants everywhere! ;)
just my guess
dori
dori - thanks, that was my first thought, but didn't want to keep the "ugly" hanging around if there was NO chance at all!! Thanks much, I have Mt. Fuji, Flying saucers mg (and tons of others) and quite a few datura's that were hit and could just scream that I was un prepared for this!!!
I sure hope that Indian Summer hits us soon.

If the pods are 'mushy',chances are the seeds will be ruined. If the pods are still firm, however discolored, they should be ok.
Your best bet for saving seeds are the pods that are protected by leaves and not on top of the plant where the frost directly hit.
Dori is right...I'll bet you have some viable seed.Mother Nature has things bloom and ripen all summer to be prepared for just this event. If they all were ruined...there would be no flowers next year.
Check carefully around your plants...there should be some seed pods that are good.
I did go check and there are quite a few good looking pods, I am praying they are ok, I really wanted to save these for trading here and for myself. The datura's seem to be ok, think the heavier pod was protected much better, but waiting to see after I check for viability before offering them!!!

(Laurrie, you have snail mail.) I don't think the frost will do a lot of damage, seed wise. It is the freezes that will do them in.
Wow, that's not a stupid question at all. I sure gained some knowledge from the answers. I wonder if our friends harvested their purple hyacinth beanpods - wonder if they were ripe enough to harvest when the frost hit.
gw, I have tons and tons of Lablab purpureus w/ more to ripen. Welcome a trade.
Well I am glad to know that there are others looking at my post, I felt totally rediculous putting it up, but don't feel quite so embarrased now!!! Thanks everyone, I too, have learned alot on this thread!
Laurrie
ps - and I think my morning glories are all gonna be ok and ripen just fine, they were not mushy at all!
