The ground hornets, and other bees here are in the grass and moving slow. We had a heavy frost last night (good-bye veggies) and had to take the smallest puppy to the vet-ER. She checked with us and what we could come up with is maybe she got one( hornet) in her mouth on their first outside this AM. These are the little ones who love to snuffled the grass and pull out chunks of it. Scarey-and $$, would watch pets and little kids. These guys are nasty.
stinging insects-watch out
Yes, indeed they are. My best friend stirred up a ground nest (yellow jackets? Hornets?) and got over 65 stings before he could get away from them. Fortunately, he is not allergic to bee stings.
That's a good warning, Marcia. We have a nest of wasps in the little birdfeeder at the top of our front steps. We need to plug it up now that they're sluggish.
We had a unusual number of wasp etc. this year also had drought; do not know if there is any relationship.
Darius, your friend may want to check with doctor about keeping a look-out, my ex-BF used to keep bees; the accumulated stings made him very allergic. This may have happened because it was over a long period of time.??
I got stung twice last week, I feel So sorry for your friend. Those really hurt.
GW- good idea, but be careful, they are sneaky little things and the sting really hurts.
Thanks for the advice for my friend, Marcia. His doctor already said he may become allergic after all those stings. Another friend in out group carries an Epi-Pen so we all have some awareness.
Do bee careful! (sorry, I couldn't resist that). A couple of years ago my friend got stung 18 times by wasps or some hornets that live in the ground, she went into shock and almost died before we could get her any help. She had never reacted to a sting before other than a swollen finger. Some of those bee type insects have barbless stingers and can sting multiple times. Honeybees have barbed stingers, one sting and it is all over for the bee.
Hornets or wasps? Whatever they are. They are stuck to the late blooming golden rod in the morning. They won't shake off. I guess that is where they spend the night.
Don't kill them please ... I don't know if it's the same in the U.S.of A. as in Germany, but surely you can get them taken away and set out in another area.
They really don't do any harm, and do a lot of good.
Get them removed, but please again ... don't do them in!!
Wintermoor
GW put a couple moth-balls inside. They will leave and Wintermoor remains happy. Frank.
