Bumper to Bumper to Bumper

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Americans average 51 hours of idle time sitting in traffic jams. At a loss of $69.5 billion (how they figured this out is anybody's guess). Here is the top 20 highway pile ups. http://www.msnbc.com/news/973844.asp

Santa Clara, CA(Zone 9a)

When we moved to Calif and I got my job 18 years ago my only request is that I didn't drive on freeways. So I got a job 5 min away. When the office was moving a few years ago I told them it better be close or I wasn't going. Now I drive 10 min and all back roads.

If I have to go on a delivery or pickup something they know that I need the back ways and it might take me longer (you know there might be a house with a really nice front yard and I need to stop and talk). So they don't send me very often, but that's fine with me.

We moved from Nevada and when you merge onto a freeway, there is never anyone there, but here you have to take your life in your hands getting on and off the freeway. I hate it, but I love to look at the houses driving the back ways.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

there is a stretch of I-26 south of Asheville NC that becomes so congested in the summers that the traffic comes to a standstill and you just move forward for brief intervals at a crawl. It needs to be widened to 6 or 8 lanes but there are so many people against the land it would take to expand. I use the backroads, too and enjoy the ride.

If I remember correctly, a study was done (1986) in South Florida in which it said, because of the hugh population increase expected in the next decade, the Florida Turnpike would have to be expanded to 19 lanes moving south. A study never followed up on, and probably out of proporation.

Kathy how about Hwy 17 on the weekends going to and coming from Santa Cruz? So many cars overheating, crawling up and over the Santa Cruz Mts. that a fellow once drove it all weekend giving roadside assistance. He called himself the "Road Ranger". The name was on his truck. Did he wear a mask? Some say he did.

golddog, Hwy 17 hasn't changed a bit, it still takes hours to get over the hill to the beach on weekends.
