How does "Skip to New" work?

it sometimes doesn't take me to the new post. It may stop in the middle somewhere, or near the end, or here or there.

What's up with this?

It takes you to the newest post you haven't yet read, which may be at the beginning if you haven't ready any of the subsequent posts, out in the middle or the end.
