My Grandma's 100th Birthday

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Me and DH are hosting my Grandma's 100th Birthday Party early November. Lots of relatives coming from around and of course, out of the country. She's active as can be and will be leaving a week after the party to go back to Costa Rica to renew some old friendships.

Anybody have any ideas that I might use to make this a special occasion?

Thanks!

Last spring, a co-worker of mine put on a party for her grandma's 100th birthday. She is in a nursing home, so the party was there and all the residents joined in. She ordered in 100 long stemmed red roses to decorate the party room.

Another thing they did was have all the kids, grandkids, great grandkids and great-great grandkids all put their handprint on a huge banner, they signed them and then it was hung up. I think they used fingerpaint for the handprints. They did this right there at the party so everyone watched and participated in the activity.

Tell your Grandma "Happy Birthday" for me.

I have never, ever known anyone that lived to be 100! That is amazing. I can only hope and pray that I will be going to Costa Rica when I am 100! She's a hero!
How about a special "memory/scrap" book....with events and headlines starting from 100 years ago up to the present...and have everyone who comes sign it with a personal message? It would be a great gift for her, I think.
I can't even imagine what this country was like 100 years ago--but I think I was born in the wrong century! What a wonderful celebration of life! Give her a kiss for me.

Lucky you too, Dea, to have a grandma to reach the age of 100.

Good for your Grandma to make 100!!

Dea, since her birthday celebration is in November, I assume she's a Scorpio? Scorps are the only 'sign' that has 3 symbols... the usual Scorpion, which first transforms to an Eagle, then again transforms to the Phoenix rising from the ashes.

Is she from Costa Rica? If she's latin, you might make her a lovely pouch to wear around her neck with something symbolic of the scorpio transitions.

Have no clues about a party, though. I'm not much of a party person. One of my favorite things to do for 50th wedding anniversary parties might be adapted for a hundreth birthday celebration.

I find an early photo, say the wedding photo, or one leaving for the honeymoon, and blow it up to poster size, with a title giving the names and dates... Then I have it dry-mounted and posted at the party with felt-tip pens so everyone can sign it. I later have it framed, and there is a lovely keepsake with all the good wishes added to the large photo!

Hey, Darius,
I am a Scorpio and I never knew that! Man, no wonder I am drawn to the Eagle and the Phoenix. Amazing! Thanks for the info. I'll have to read more about it!

Dea, this made me think of my mom's 75th birthday celebration. My mom (now passed on) could not/would not sing because she couldn't carry a tune for the life of her.. but boy, could she ever whistle! Everyone in our home town knew it, too. When we were kids we would go in the family cherry orchard with her, and she would whistle so my sister and I would always be able to find her. She had the most beautiful whistle anyone had ever heard. Anyway, as a special tribute to her, at her birthday celebration, we all gathered in a circle and instead of singing, we all whistled "When Irish Eyes Are Smilin". It was very sweet. And we sounded darn good, too!
