Visiting Lisa!

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

I know they're having a great time ~ I'm wishing I was with 'em!

Is she there all week, Howie? How is everyone back at the Columbus ranch?

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

frogs, when you gig for flounder, you walk in the surf at night with a lantern hanging about 3 feet above the water. The light shines through the surf and you can see the outline of the flounder laying in the sand. You use a pole with a "gig" at the end of it and jook the flounder. Then you slide your hand under the flounder and pick it up outta the water. Hopefully, you have stuffed flounder for supper the next day :-).

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Do dem flat fish bite?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Well, we're heading out -- We'll be back Thursday!

If there's wireless access at the campground, we might see y'all sooner.

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

I bet you two are having alot of fun and I hope you catch/gig alot of flounder during your camping adventure! I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures and I'm especially waiting to see a recipe too. :o)

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I think the only thing that Lisa giged was Kimberley's cell phone that she droped in the water. LOL

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It's true, it's true...The water was too murky Wednesday night to see anything to gig!

Thank God, Lisa saw the little pouch fall and snatched it out of the surf when she did, or it would have gone out to sea. When we shook it off and dried it off, it made this awful little sizzly static sound and went dead. :(

We were singing "There's a phone in the bottom of the sea"

Now, can you believe it still works?? I plugged it in when we got back home and it started charging and works! I had to reset the date and time on it, but it remembered the phone numbers in the phonebook. Go figure!

Kimberley...are you eating lots of rice?? I'm sorry you didn't get any flounder...they are so good broiled in butter and lemon sauce.....Jo

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, Jo, we even had fresh shrimp to stuff in the flounder! Yes, I had rice Tuesday, but none since. ;)

Verona, ON

I've been waiting to read the post that says you and Lisa are in the local jail Kimberley. Figured you'd be asking all us DGs to help post bail. Where I come from to gig is illegal as is using a flashlight at night when you fish. I can see the headlines now Local Gardener leads visiting Gardener from Ohio astray. Hope the 2 of you are having a blast! D.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Kidney...they're not responding yet. I hear tell they haven't posted bond yet!

Last I heard they were paying off the jail warden (with shrimp, gator tail, empty promises, and flounder).

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Floundering to answer...We never caught any, anyhoo.

Lisa said it's not illegal here, and they even have piers set up with lights at night that you can drop down. I've got many pictures from our time at Grand Isle, but won't get them up tonight. These folks have me tired enough I get to bed before MIDNIGHT, even. Can you BELIEVE it??

Oh GW Sleep tight while drool at the thought of biting into of lovely looking critters!

Verona, ON

Phew!!! So glad you were not committing a crime. Shoe and I were probably thinking we would have to drive our very old pickups down there to bail you out for bribery, but at least then Shoe and I would have a load of shrimp and flounder to take back home. Now wouldn't that make the box of my ancient Ford Ranger smell lovely by the time I got back to the Canadian Border.
Enjoy your day tomorrow at the wedding. Please don't tell me it is a local custom for the bride and groom to go out to gig on their Wedding night. D

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Aw shucks. Yall don't EAT that road(beach)kill do ya?! Maw alus said that if'n it stunk........don't eat it.

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

Kimberley, so glad to hear your cell was okay. Even though you didn't gig any flounder I bet you two had a alot of fun!

Howie, when I read your post about the phone incident it sounded exactly like something Adam would have said. :o) In fact, Adam read this thread and wondered if they didn't drop the cell in the water so as to try to call the flounder in! LOL

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Here's the one flounder we saw...It was already dead and washed up on shore! It had a hole through it, so it looked like someone gigged it, it got away.

My DH used to say that the large flounder were hard to catch on a hook as the weight of their body would pull the hook from their mouths...and he lost a lot that way. He loved to go over to the Eastern Shore of Va for Flounder. Seems like it used to be legal to gig them there...not sure on that. Jo

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

I remember giggin' flounders once.

'Twas in Florida and I was out skin-diving (not to be confused w/SCUBA diving). There I was with my mask on, my snorkel stuck in my mouth, big flippers on my feet, and a gig in my hand. When I gave up (didn't see no flounders out that deep) I swam back in closer and was soon in shallow water and could walk.

Flounders were everywhere! I got me a couple of them right quick! Then I saw right at my left foot a huge one! I jabbed at it and I was so stunned I couldn't walk!

Yep, every since then I only purchased blue-colored flippers, never wore the "flounder-colored" ones ever again.

Verona, ON

Sure glad that Lisa and Kimberley didn't find you the first time Kimberley went floundering. OOps == I mean gigging for flounder. Imagine their surprize if they were able to gig a redhaired barefoot flounder!!!D

Crossville, TN

OH! Shoe...you po feller!! No wonder you can't weaar shoes! Jo

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

Shoe, you certainly have a colorful (flounder colored) imagination. You are a MESS, my friend! I am still laughing!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

If Shoe'd been with us, we'd have been giggling and floundering.

We went to the wedding of Lisa's niece tonight at Oak Alley Plantation. Oh, man, what a beautiful setting!

So I've got photos and threads in the works (in my head) for three things:

1. Grand Isle
2. Cajun Man's swamp tour and
3. The wedding at Oak Alley

I think you'll enjoy the tour. I sure have. :)

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL, Shoe! Now am I being gullible or is that a true story? If it were me doing the jabbing, I'd certainly believe it. Your poor foot if'n you really did jab it ~ ouch!

Kim, it sounds like y'all have had such a fun time :) I've been reading along enjoying your escapades down in LA with Lisa & family.

South Point, OH(Zone 6a)

I am thinking it was only the flippers that got gigged. Hope I am right about this. Have to tell Bob this story, he'll enjoy it too.

Lisa, you should have a b&b where city folks come to experience farm life and adventures. My sister and I went to one once, but it was a poor thing compared to what Kim is experiencing.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi, everyone. I wrote a little in my blog tonight and posted some links and pictures. I'll write here more at DG soon. http://mt.gardenwife.com

If the link doesn't work right away, please have patience; sometimes it will not come up for folks when I've recently updated an entry.

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

Kim, I love your website. I have put it in my computer favorites with its very own folder. (Not inside a topics folder. Yours makes the 5th one of those which should show you how special it is to me.)

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL on the Campbell's Gumbo! The turducken looks interesting... I love turkey & chicken, but not a fan of duck. I'll be interested to hear how you like it & what it tastes like. Glad your trip has been so much fun!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We had it last year here, and it was wonderful. It's rich and flavorful. The stuffing, seasonings and meats all intermingle and it's juicy and wonderful. Mmmmm. Wish it was Thanksgiving!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Campbell's chicken gumbo is not for me.. I rather to eat homecook GUMBO instead come from a can!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Well, according to Lisa's brother who flies a lot, we have to get to the airport 2 hours earlier than the flight. That makes for an early morning considering the flight's at 9:05am. I'm copying my pictures and other files over to my little external hard drive now and getting to bed early tonight.

After I get home and rest for a day, I'll post pictures -- Lots of them! Between Lisa and me, I know we'll have lots of stories to relate about them!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Kim,

I can't wait to see and hear all that you have done this week. I just know that Lisa is a wonderful hostess from being around her at the RU. I bet you had some great food too!!!
Have a safe flight and give Lisa and family a big hug from me when you leave.

Donna

Crossville, TN

SOCal...I have emailed you twice this week...are you getting them? Jo

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

"Ijust know that Lisa is a wonderful hostess from being around her at the RU"

Ten four on that SoCal! Heck, between the shrimp, fish, frog legs and gator I'd say she was a dang good hostess! She cooked it all! (and Jesse helped!) (all I did was help eat it!)

I surely wonder what miracles happened down there in bayou country with GW. If they didn't gig no fish, what DID they gig?

(I really think Lisa needs a campground down there, for all of us!)

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Are we thinking of a RU at Lisa's & Jesse's place next year ~ lol! Sure sounds like fun :)

AMEN Shoe! I agree! Have really enjoyed all your stories Kimberly and Lisa and can't wait to see pictures..

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Looking forward to the pictures also all the stories.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I know Lisa is a wonderful hostess. Looks like you had a great time. Hurry Kimberley and rest up so we get pictures.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I'm back and I rested realllly well last night (with my own pillow - oh, I missed it!). I'm sipping coffee with the Mister and getting my head together. Look for some pictures to be up today. :)

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Which forum are you gonna use to post the pictures, GW?
