I need the correct proceedure for collecting datura seed I got some years ago and most grew. last year I collected lots but none grew. should I put a plastic bag over the pod untill it splits? Any information appreciated .Thanks All

maybe a nylon stocking or something that won't keep in the moisure. I would be concerned that a plastic bag would make it too hot and steamy and rot the seedpod. What kind of datura do you have? I have lilac la fleur and eventually the seedpods dry up and it cracks open, with many small dark seeds. I'm trying to do the same for Datura Wrightii, but the past two have gotten soggy and opened, so not sure if the seeds are viable. Need to test them.

Sbarr thanks will give that a try may build a plastic tent over the top as well.

As for the type I don't really know it is 3 feet high and wide with blue green folage the flowers are about 8 inches long and in the evening fill the air with a sweet scent so strong that I can smell them just walking by.

eweed,

If I were to guess I would say that you probably have Datura Wrightii or Datura Inoxia. These both bloom at night only and are very large white blooms. The seed pods are very spiny. I don't do anything to my pods other than just watch them ripen. When they ripen to the point of turning brown and start to crack I pick the pod and let it dry. I also do this with my 'Black Currant Swirl' Datura and have great luck with the viability of the seeds. Here is a pic of my Datura Wrightii.

Brenda thanks so much from your picture I would say this is the plant I have.

Could be the seed I saved were not mature enough I tried to beat the rain. This summer we have had a better growing season it was a dry one 63 days without rain. And did it ever get hot several days in the 80 degree range and a couple in the nineties.

I bought some seed last year expecting to get another nice plant but got the reverse. I got a little flowered purple and white that is spread all over my yard.
