Chat room for Isabel
Ah, darlin, don't worry -- by the time Isabel would get to you, it will just be a whimper. Could bring you a little rain, perhaps a little wind gust, nothing major.
Believe it or not, I am hoping the remnants get over to my yard -- gotten pretty dry the last few weeks. Only 1/10" of rain for the last 2 weeks :(
Yeah, Margaret... Looks like you may see some wind and rain from Isabel, but probably not too bad by the time it reaches you. Stay warm and dry!
You know something - I wasn't that worried until I returned from the city today. Folk are buying everything up because this area is renowned for flooding and loss of power. When I heard that Lowes supply of plywood was running very low I thought YIKES!!! ...and then Governor Warner came on the telly and told us to be vigilant!! I've filled the bath with water but haven't done much else. :-)
Margaret, I remember driving down I-81 in the remnants of Hurricane David, which came ashore on the Gulf and straight up, and brought lots of rain to your area. We stopped in Staunton to eat and couldn't get back on to I-81 because the ramps were flooded. Had to take US 25 nearly all the way to NC, dodging whole trees floating down the road, and stopping often because the rain was so fierce we couldn't see what to dodge.
Fill your freezer with bottles of water... it will help keep it cold if the power goes out. Find a manual opener for canned goods, and locate all the candles, matches, etc. You are a trooper and will be fine. :)
My sister works in Washington, DC but lives in Alexandria, VA. She got notified today they wouldnt be reporting for work tomorrow, Thursday, due to closing the trans running to Washington, DC. That's all I know alittle more up north. Get your battery operated radios ready, some oil lamps or candles, bottled water (the freezer idea was great) and some sandwiches ready. You may experience tornadic weather as well so have a plan. When I lived in Savannah, GA. Hurricane Floyd missed Savannah but the outer edge of the hurricane was deadly to some areas. It produced a tornado that killed a few people. So God be with everyone and be prepared for shelter. I evacuated that time as did everyone but some didnt. They weren't so lucky.
Thanks for all the advice. Never heard of the frozen water in the freezer - sounds a great idea!! I think I just about have everything else. Heck - I hope we don't have tornadoes. Everything is closing down in Charlottesville. Scottsville is on the James, so I bet they are bagging up even now. The University also taking precautions. I just looked at the latest news and we could get winds up to 90 miles an hour (gusts). I'll be alright!! The cats and I will sleep in a huge closet Thursday night when the storm will be at it's worst and I shall be clutching my cross and praying!! It had to be during the night huh!!! lol!!! I must phone Tim and Erin since they live in a very wooded area!! darius if we lose power, I will phone vic. Thank God for cell phones.
