Corkscrew Vine(vigna caracalla)
as a matter fo fact i do use downey. never a load with out it. your welcome.
hopefully my dd does stay well. she scared me and they couldnt find a cause to what was causing her symptoms. but we made it through it so hopefully it was a one time episode.
thanks
I bought this plant from Descanso Gardens in La Canada, CA. Grows rapidly! I am finding the vine everywhere; I think it outgrows the morning glory I consider a weed! Anyway, the ants (and boy do we have ants here!) LOVE the flowers. I can't find a flower without ants on it. I'll see if I get seeds and try to collect some for you needy people out there.
I am needy....(Ü)....
Geesh...I am Way Neeeeeeeeeeeedy :-D
-i am needy too dont forget me.
When (not if!) I make a tradelist, and if (not when!) I get seeds (what do they look like? pods?) then you can email me. They called it Snail Vine when I bought it (Descanso Gardens, La Canada, CA). I'll see if I can get a pix uploaded of it this week.
The pods look like this... http://plantsdatabase.com/showpicture/9227/
The vine/flowers look like this... http://plantsdatabase.com/showpicture/8951/
Ok ok heading home to get my digital camera. I take it this vine is not as well behaved as I had hoped, err, I just wasn't prepared for how fast it grew! I had it next to some pumpkins, and it just tagged along, up over a fence, into an 8-foot-tall cestrum!
jermainiac
That sure looks like it to me, did you know it roots well in water (just an idea for all those needy people) tee hee (trying to help ya out ladies)!!
Pretty photo too.
I have one on the id forum trying to figure out what it is, I know it is NOT the snail vine, but it sure is pretty.
Here is a pic, perhaps someone out there has encountered this somewhere in their search already. No scent to this one.
Laurrie
Laurie, what you have is a Lathyrus species.......

Jermainiac, yours appears to be the snail vine, not the corkscrew...
Corkscrew vine...Snail Vine... It's still Vigna caracalla right? The variety I have doesn't have white or cream. Sunset Garden Guide doesn't list named varietals.
i would love some if anyone gets seeds thanks
moretz
jermainiac, there is a difference between the two....unfortuantely alot of places call both plants Vigna caracalla which in fact that is the name of the corkscrew, the correct name for the snail vine is Phaseolus caracalla.
Well, it appears the "correct" name is debatable. I actually looked it up in Hortus Third (note Happenstance's recent purchase of this excellect reference!) and all of those names (corkscrew vine, snail vine, etc.) are listed under v. caracalla. It does mention that it's sometimes referred to as Phaseolus, but I'll let some botanical congress reconcile that one.
That said, I'll end my diatribe on this thread (and still call it V. caracalla!) :-)

I agree you jermainiac and it makes it a pain when one is looking to buy it because the name is used so loosely.....I just want to own one - and when I do I will also rename it....it will be called MINE...lol...
Mine is just beginning to bloom for the first time. The blooms are tiny and not too colorful yet, but maybe!!! can get a good pic in a few days. Things are either not blooming at all or blooming very late this year. My dahlias are just now getting blooms and it is almost the end of Sept.
*motioning* to haighr...wanna share some of her? lol I would love to have a peice or something :-))))
Just saw you raise your hand, if I get seeds will let you know. Plant is potted and still relatively small compared to most and just a few blooms, but will keep eye out for seed.
Thank you haighr :o)
WOW, she's a beauty!
WOW, WOW, WOW! I can't stand it! Yours are SOOOOOOO beautiful!! I wanna cry.............

Oh Jules is that for real? Those are some pretty big blooms, I didnt know the blooms were that big..I was thinking they were smaller like the snail. You've really got a winner there..sniff, sniff, sure does smell good... :o)
Jules, awesome job!!!!!
WOW OH WOW
They are something!
Hey jules - is your white hyacinth bean vine fragrant?
Yes, actually, they do have a very faint & light vanilla kind of scent, especially when they are in full bloom and there are many blooms all together. But they are nothing compared to the vignas, gardenias, jasmines, tuberoses, etc.
Yes - very subtle......thanks.
Mmmmmmmmm love that smell :-)
bump.
Did anyone ever have a corkscrew(vigna caracalla) plant or seedlings to trade?
I think I got left out :( I think the one who started the post should at least get one trade for one of these plants:)
I'd trade for some too!
Steve
