Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

I soon got over my disappointment over the vine tho...you see, when I bought the alleged "corkscrew" vine I noticed there was another vine (actually 3) growing in it that I recogonized right away (I LOVE freebies)....it has finally bloomed....

I contacted Parks Seed the first part of the year to find out when they were getting more of these real corkscrew seeds in and they told me they would not until next year (2004) because their supplier had a major crop failure....maybe the supplier killed all the ants at his site, LOL..!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Beautiful Clitoria!!! Right????

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

You are right Badseed.....(Ü).....

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Believe it or not, I have been growing one and this is the 3rd. year for it. I brought it inside last eve because of the hurricane and guess what, it finally has a bloom on it after all this time. Also, my tuberose that I just took inside has one bloom also. If I ever get seed from the vigna, will be sure to post.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Maybe yours wants to be a "house plant" haighr....it likee the A/C....lol...

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I grew the white last year and the blue the year before. I can never help being sort of embarrassed by that flower! LOL

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

I TOTALLY agree Badseed......

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Let me have a chat with Susie later on. I think she rooted cuttings last year. I have two plants but I am keeping one-the ONE with blooms! LOL I also just realized the cactus asked first and now I feel bad.

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi,
thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth. My friend Laurrie (ohiobreezy) and I are growing these. There are 2 varieties but here is what I have discovered growing both. The cream with purple edges is fragrant & has a much fleshier petal. The blossom only lasts 1 day & the fragrance reminds me of gardenias. The solid purple is a much flimsier petal, not fragrant & the blossoms stay on for days. The ants are the pollinators of these. OK, OK, I KNOW you already know all that! LOL my contribution is this:
while the ants mill all over these, they do not disturb the solid purples whereas the stinking little buggers CHEW OFF the cream colored buds! Bet you didn't know that! I had a bumper crop of buds & kept finding them on the ground so I started paying closer attention & sure enough, the ants were chewing all the buds off at the base. So now, from my "bumper crop", I have ended up with 2 piddling blooms. I decided I would rather have the blooms then the seedpods since the odds are I would not get any seeds anyway, and put down ant poison & managed to get rid of them. I have a few more buds starting so will probably get a few more blooms if I can keep the ants off. So if you ARE growing these, pay attention to that & nip it in the bud (no pun intended) before you lose all your flowers.
There, I think I actually put in a nickels worth but hey, your all worth it! :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I bring mine inside before it goes below 50 at night. Hope the bloom on mine opens while inside, it is small but being the first one, I don't care, just be nice to see it bloom. My bedroom looks like a jungle, musa, jasmine, 2 pineapple, orange tree, tuberose, venus fly trap and now 3 trachycarpus wagnerianus! LOL hard to move around in there!

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

ROTFL you all are too funny!! Pudgy (and you know you are NOT pudgy!!!!)...you know I always listen to your ramblings, and most times they are right on!!! he he he. Still watching mine, and alas, where I thought there were buds, I don't find any this morning, think the ants all came here for dinner last night, but keeping my eye on them!!!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Don't feel bad Chele, I would probably lose it before spring anyway!!

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok guys...I'm have to say this while I brace myself - I have also heard that this vine develops tubers so it should come back year after year..??..

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I think when they sell them, they list them as tubers, but in more of an actuality it is more like a clump of roots. I remember reading about someone (maybe shoe??) ordering it and some other people and they actually got roots as opposed to like dahlia tubers. I am pretty sure that is what I read. I did not try to overwinter them last year but I will this year. I did well just moving some pots of stuff right into the garage.

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

that's how mine came, a group of tubers. I planted them (it??) in April and my vines are about 12 feet long already, eith lots of baby buds.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Maybe it depends how much you pay? LOL I mean, how old the roots are. :)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

moonlighting, here is a thread I started about the this vine that I bought from Monticello. It came as a 2 year old tuber. You'll see a picture of it too.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Yep jules - that's the one I "heard" of - and thanks for the post....BTW - how was your luck with it? I almost bought one from the same place myself but instead opted to go the seed route...and you guessed it - I had NO luck with them!....oh they sprouted alright...but then they decided to rot in the pot...Anyway I checked back with Monticello recently but could not find the vine on their website, so it must be a seasonal item...at least if I go with them I know its the real thing!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

moonlighting,

On Sept. 17th you wrote:
"My local nursery had the corkscrew vine in stock this year and after the owner guaranteed to me that this was indeed the "corkscrew/fragrant/purple to cream" one I was looking for - I bought it.....and just look at it now!"

The picture you posted is definitely a White Hyacinth Bean Vine! I've had them for years! I collect the seeds and replant them every year. Here's a picture of mine.

You mentioned in your next post that you felt it was a snail plant. But I don't think so.

I'm also growing the real fragrant corkscrew and it is now in full bloom. The scent is 'out of this world'!!! I sure hope I get some seeds out of it.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Yep, your white hyacinth bean vine looks exactly like my white snail vine....so my vine has now been renamed to "white Hyacinth bean" vine.....LOL....at least now I know how to properly ID it when I go to give all the seeds away.......

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry to burst your bubble, moonlighting, but if you're like me, I have to know exactly what I'm growing. I can't remember if you said you started them from seed or not, but if you did, here's a link to the Plant Database showing what the seeds look like.

http://plantsdatabase.com/showpicture/14970/

These are the black seeds, that make the purple flowering hyacinth beans, but the white flowering ones make the exact looking seeds, except for the fact that they are brown in color instead of black.

Just for your information, the seeds for this white flowering Hyacinth Bean Vine are rare to find. I was very fortunate last year to do some interesting trades with these seeds. Be sure to let the seed pods dry very well on the vine, and then harvest them. I truly love this vine. It looks great!

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Jules - that bubble was not a big one to bust, trust me!...LOL....the bubble started shattering when it bloomed....but I do appreciate you correctly IDing it - it does help when one is growing things, plus I would of hated to have given seed up to someone who wanted the white snail vine.....I have grown the purple hyacinth bean vine in the past but really never paid attention to the similarity of flower between the two, nor the seed since I have yet to see a seed from this particular vine...This white one more or less just grows and I never really look at it just to check pods for readiness while waiting for the winter thing to be over with so I can plant the much desired cork-screw vine to take its place. I did not grow this from seed but bought it from a nursery....I will be adding this to my trade list for those who would enjoy growing it.....(Ü).....

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I know nothing about this company but I think this is the one you are looking for. I have no idea if this is a good price or not, but I think I may have to give them a try. These are drop dead gorgeous.

After looking at this site for a few minutes I may have to pack my bags and move to zone 9, my goodness they have nice pictures. If their plants are half as good they must be wonderful.
Alice

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Alice, I totally agree with you, thinking of packing my bags and heading that way too, those are lovely. Here we would have to pot and bring inside for the winter, but some of those sure look like they would be worth a try!!
Laurrie

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've ordered from this place twice and had great plants from them. Always, large, clean, and bug free. I hope I wasn't just the lucky one, but from my experience, I'd sure recommend them.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

wow im moving just for the plants. hehe wow those are some pretty plants. i just dont have the room. would have to give up some of my glories to ddo them. love my mgs too much. but can look.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Imzadi, surely you have room for one more pot....just grow you one in a pot against a tree, fence or anything thats standing. They are worth the effort...the flowers are sooooo pretty you just have to get one......... :o)

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Drooling over site!!!!.......lol.....thanks for posting the site....
