Weird call

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Just got a call and a computer voice said:

"I'm sorry, I dialed the wrong number" and hung up.

Huh? Has this happened to anyone else?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Are you on the "Do Not Call List". It's possible that if you are they detected some sort of report and hung up.

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Ah, that's probably it - we're signed up for Do not call". Too bad the program can't figure it out before it dials. Thanks!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

The do not call list should preclude your being called in the first place. Do you have any caller-id software in place, anything that zaps blocked calls?

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

No, we sure don't. Might be worth checking into. I tell you, though. This Do Not Call has made a real difference. It was pretty bad when solicitors outnumbered friends and family.

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

The do not call list does not go into effect until Oct 1st.

And Oct.1st cannot get here soon enough..

True. I've noticed that telemarketers - the legitimate ones, anyway - are more apt to listen when you clearly say, "excuse me. Please add this number to your Do Not Call list" now. I even had one read me back a standard disclaimer saying it could take up to 6 weeks for our number to be cleared from all lists.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

The "National Do Not Call List" is in effect with fines on October 1. The excemptions is if they already have a working relationship with you. But you can stop any business from calling by saying "Please Put Me on Your Do Not Call List". Those words EXACTLY will result in fines for them if you document further calls after the 6 week period. My daughter was a telemarketer while in high school.
The telemarketers are calling heavy now to establish a relationship with customers BEFORE the National list takes effect. Also, there may be a loopholes if the telelmarketer is "associated" with somone you do business with: your bank, insurance company or credit card companies.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Gotta love those loopholes. :S I'm glad to have caller-ID, for many of the calls we've received come from a phone number with a Cleveland-vicinity area code. I've told them to add me to their do not call list, and I have saved the record of their calling us. If they persist in calling, I have it on record with the dates and times.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

gardenwife--Go get them! Anything I hate is to be digging in the garden & have to stop and answer the phone. It had better be important....

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I used to love talking on the phone, but then I worked 3 years as a customer service support rep taking order and customer service calls all day, and calling back customers who the first-tier customer service people couldn't help. Ever since then I just don't much like to talk on the phone!

If an organization calls you 6 weeks after you have asked them to put you on their 'Do Not Call' list, who do you contact to report them?

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Edited to edit out my joke that didn't really make any sense after I heard NoH2O say "Huh?"
