Joys of Frost Warnings

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Weatherman has forecasted nasty drops in temp coming our
way. Plants have all been pulled in, dining room looks
like a jungle, kitchen floor covered in puddles, mud, etc.
husband growling over how the plants seem to have multiplied
over the summer! Took a load of the taller Brugs to the
library...2 above the Y ones are now over 7 feet, piled
them onto our utility trailer...what a hoot watching
people mouths drop as we drove by. These are definitely
a rarely seen plant in this neck of the woods...or prairie.
What's the forecast for your area?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Lilypon: Even we are pulling in the trops as it has gone down to 8 degrees. If kids don't get here with camera soon, there will be no pics as everthing is shutting down out there. A drastic change in the past 2 weeks! I am picuring your Brugs driving by to the library. What a hoot. Happy Fall in MJ.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Sunrize!! It was a sight to behold-Frosty had over
30 blooms so they knew they were looking at something
different. Good luck with your hauling and be careful...
that slope looks dangerous when you have arms full of pots.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thanks Lilypon for pointing me to this forum.

I am in North Dakota and it's getting mighty cold here too already. No frost warnings issued yet, but it sure feels like it could surprise us anytime. I think the only thing saving us from frost is that it's been cloudy and wet for the past few days. If it was clear, I think we may have already have gotten frost.

This is only my second year with brugs. Last year I got lucky with the few I had and overwintered them in the crawl space of our home. I can't remember when I brought them in there though, and this year my collection has tripled, so I don't want to lose them.

I'm looking forward to visiting you guys here. I hadn't even thought about the canadian forum and the fact that you all have much the same weather/climate I do here. Glad to have someone to chat with that is trying to grow things we normally aren't supposed to be able to.

Where there's a will, there's a way, right?

Hugs,
Joan

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

In our zones there has to be a strong will to make the
"way"! Glad to see you here JoanJ!! It was under the
Plumbago thread that Liz was very specific about what
temps the different varieties of Brugs can handle. We
are overcast here too but this afternoon we had a red
line running through the weather channel warning of killing
frost. It has since disappeared but I'm glad they are in-
every morning I wake up thinking it's too cold for them.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Okay, I'm reading my way through this forum and learning lots. I'll look for the Plumbago thread. I have no idea what a plumbago is, but if it's something I'll think I need, then I'm in trouble again. LOL! The crawl space is gonna be so full this winter.

Question though, I have a plumeria that I started from an 18" stick. It sat and sat for ever, then started getting a few leaves on top recently. Should I bring that into the house and let it live for the winter, or would it go dormant in the crawl space and survive?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

JoanJ I don't have one...though I have certainly been
trying! What I have heard is that when it drops it's
leaves it is ready to go into dormancy. Since yours
just developed leaves recently I think that means it
has just developed it's roots. It may keep it's leaves
all winter into next summer ... I would imagine after
that it will be ready to drop it's leaves and go into
dormancy. There is a really good site that was pointed
out to me called Plumeria 101:
http://plumeria101.com

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thanks again Pam! You are suddenly my life saver/plant saver. I'm off to read that link. I think I may let it live in the bay window this winter, so it may have one more year to prove itself worthy. :)

I didn't find the brug temp info on the plumbago thread?

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Down to 5 here last night but much nicer this evening. The low is forecast only for 12. But Monday they are saying 2 degrees. I looked around the garden(s) today and decided I have way too much to do to wait until frost. So the first thing to go were the squash plants and tomorrow I will start to harvest all the tomatos - green, pink or red. Then I'll start to pull some of the annuals that are kind of bloomed out. Also have lots of seed pods to collect.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Sorry about that...I should've looked more carefully! It's
under the Datura Seed posting near the bottom of the page.
It isn't Liz's thread but she did post the temps. there.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

you seem to be watching this thread tonite so even though this is off topic i'm still thinking about the prairie invasion of west coast gardens. The thing is when could it be done without worry about our own gardens. We start propagating by the end of February and from then until about now it's risky leaving anyone else in charge for longer than 48 hours. But I would want to see those plants at their best. Any suggestions. Run an add for relief gardeners? LOL

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

jagonjune...please check your most recent thread on the
Mexican Fiesta Vine! Glad you mentioned the tomatoes...
I've been thinking tropicals so much I'm forgetting the
others! The ladies at the coast must be very, very
busy right now...B.C. is very quiet tonight.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Have checked and will do. I just got home from work - this is my let down time after a 15 hour shift. But as I turn in the driveway, the first site is a great flush of double purple datura blooms glowing in the houselights and as I exit the van I can smell that sweet perfume. Its intoxicating. I can hardly wait until the first brug bloom.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It is soo tempting...but if we are to go it has to be when
their greenhouses are loaded!! I had my brother look after
my plants this summer for a week...the best choice I have
ever made. I've had teachers, librarians, etc. look after
my plants before and come back to dried out sticks...
scary...but I would kill to see a greenhouse with Plumeria,
etc.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

that's what you think!!! ha, ha! Just finished watching the show "Hack", and here I am...online with you guys! Cleaned up plants some more this morn and in the afternoon..just vegged? vedged?? oh well, have a great day tomorrow...come to think of it, I put on an extra shirt today...temps---------------down

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Hi Roselaine and here I was thinking you guys were working
your b#ts off...the extra shirt is on here too! It
really feels like we have air conditioning inside the
house now! How many tropicals do you have? Have you
taken any pics of them?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Jagonjune...let me know if your Datura's do form seeds.
I love the double/triple purple datura. I've had a
few over the years...one year one was spectacular and
it formed pods but I had no inkling of what to do with
them. Won't let that happen again!

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

I started those guys late and didn't get my first bloom until mid august so I am watching that pod like a hawk hoping it will mature before plant death. If it does I will send you some.

Thanks for the botanical name on the fiesta vine. Its a cheerful little thing.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

As of now no frost here, night lows still above double digits (on °C scale for our american friends :)during the day above 25°C. But the low from out west moving in and is expected to arrive on Thursday. My Hoyas already have been moved inside and still rearanging things so that they fit LOL.

Yorkton, Canada(Zone 3b)

Lilypon...I have quite alot of the double/purple datura seeds.....would you be interested in swapping with me? I would love to have a cutting/seed of one of the Brugs you've grown. I have studied and continued to watch the Brugmansia threads since joining DG, and although I thought it was to late for this season, next season I think I may be Brugmasias etc. best customer. They are by far one of the most gorgeous looking plants I have seen.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

dema which zone 3b are you in?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

PanamonCreel I was wondering how you managed all your plants. In a house I am having a hard time finding space
for all my treasures, I can't imagine how you are finding
room for your brugs, etc. You will have to post some pics
of your plants in their winter quarters. I have a feeling
your apartment has a gorgeous exotic look come winter.

Dema I will be happy to send a cutting your way. I
will be taking cuttings in a while so come spring I am
sure we can do a trade. I received 2 Brugs from Liz and
they are gorgeous...plants were very healthy and I am so
looking forward to seeing the first buds open.

Yorkton, Canada(Zone 3b)

Jagonjune....I like Lilypon live in Saskatchewan, but abit N. of Yorkton is where I reside. I kinda fall on a border between 2 different zones, depends on what map you look at.

Lilypon....I'll hold you to that trade. This season is almost at an end, and I'm already anticipating next year's plantings. Brugs, brugs and more brugs.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Got no Brugs but got two pots of Passion flowers.I'm still not sure how to store them over winter (any tips?).
Got a "huge" Tamarillo Tree (started as a little seed experiment last winter LOL) which I can store in the buildings indoor swimming pool area over winter. Some larger Hoyas will go there too. The rest should fit in my windows except I'm still trying to find a space for my Brassia Orchid (man that thing grew this year). Maybe it'll go in my office at work but the window there is also pretty full LOL. One way or another it has to fit or I'll have some give aways ;).

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Wheeled all the brugs(4)and daturas(2)into the garage tonight. Wonder what the neighbors thought if they looked out and saw me wheeling my pot down the street from the neighbor who has been surrogating one of them. Its the only one with buds so I am desperately trying to think of a way to make a happy home for it indoors until it blooms. Can't bear to think of loosing those buds. What do you think of bare rooting it(them), repotting with fresh soiless mix in a new pot, spraying the leaves with Sopers and then bringing it in.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Hi PanamonCreel I overwintered my Passiflora in the
bedroom window. It was very cool there but they didn't
go into dormancy...slow growth continued. They bloomed
profusely all winter but by the time they were ready to
go out looked pretty sad. I cut them down to 8", my
Dad thought I was nuts, and started watering and fertilizing
a bit. They are now in full bloom. I haven't got my
newbies, the more exotic tropical ones to bloom yet, but
am hopeful. You'll have to post a pic. of the swimming
area...bet the owner loves your exotics as much as you
appreciate the humidity.

Jagonjune I don't have the knowledge Liz has, but I would
be tempted to just give them the spray and leave them alone
until the blooming is done. It would be awful if the
transplanting caused the buds to drop. Hopefully Liz will
drop by to tell you more.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

ok, Lizzie-babe, where are you...some gals on here need your expertise!!!! passy-flowers????? your neib..Elaine

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Panamoncreel...if you ever feel the need to give away or
trade...please post in the Canadian Forum as well. Especially when one of your plants needs a haircut...you've
got such an interesting collection...even without the
Brugs;~)!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I'll have to come back and reply this afternoon. Today is my mailing day. Sorry.

Yorkton, Canada(Zone 3b)

Liz...After having read the Canadian Trading & Brugmansias & Friends thread I do believe you are the person I'm to speak with. I had never heard of Brugmansias until joining DG in July, I have since daily scrutinized everything possible to do with Brugs (they are spectacular and I do mean everyone of them)haven't seen an ugly one yet. Although I think its to late for Brugs this year, I do want to acquire them for next year. I would appreciate any suggestions you have as to various types, ease of growing etc. for my Zone (3b). Thanking you in advance for any info you can share.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Dema, feel free to email me anytime. Are you in Moose Jaw too?
OK, I have the memory span of a gnat and this thread is so long. What was I going to answer???? LOL

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Liz look at Jagonjune's posting Sept. 14, 9:57

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Did you know that my time on daves is not the same as your time on daves? Hmm, Jagonjune is 1 hour ahead of me (yes?)so that's 10:57. Nope, it's 11:57 on my screen.
It's already in a pot Lynn? Why do you want to repot it? I would definitely spray it before you bring it in. Sure you can bring it into the house until it blooms.

edited to say that I've now updated my preferences to Pacific daylight time so now I'm an hour behind Edmonton.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

well today i visited the hydroponic store where i purchased my first 1000 watt light- got a second, got a 125 super something or other and a low speed fan and some dr doom. so the brugs went into the new cupboard in the garage got fogged with dr doom and will come out into the house tomorrow with their new light. I get to repeat this every 72 hours for 3 times. This he says should have the bugs, their offspring, and any other lingering possible offspring gone for good. And I will be ready for olympic weightlifting. Those pots are heavy!!! There goes a possible new fall wardrobe for me but what the heck - the plants, the dog and the horses come first (not necessarily in that order). So now I will plan on keeping them growing over the winter. Should I plan on any dormancy at all?

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

The big red line is in the forecast tonite and the dreaded word flurries tomorrow. Harvested the rest of the tomatoes and the basil. also collected more seeds this evening. The joys of life in the frozen north. Two seasons - winter and road construction.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

YUCK!!!! It doesn't look good for west of Manitoba on the
weather channel...except for Kelowna they are prob. very
happy right now. We are 11 degrees lower than normal right
now. What a poor summer, here at least, late start, drought, early end. We certainly live in next year country.

Jagonjune...at least your plants will be very happy :~)
I do think I read the brugs would like a bit of a rest
Jan/Feb but again I am still learning as well. Past years
I have watered them enough to save the tips (doesn't always
work) and have pulled them back from the windows.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Whoa! I just checked Calgary's forecast. Heavy snowfall warning continues!!! up to 10 centimetres tomorrow. I guess edmonton not so bad after all.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Oh, joy...and what hits Calgary seems to head over to
my area! Fish have got to come in!! They are going to
be in for a rude awakening if they don't let us catch them
tomorrow!

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

Man, you guys are heading into cold temps too quickly out there.
Here the Toronto area's biggest worry is Hurricane Isablelle, she is expected to hit here with winds and rain Friday by the looks of it.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

That's not pleasant either!! May we all have a gorgeous
Indian Summer! And next year I want April showers,
May Flowers and to be able to put my plants out EARLY!
