48 degrees? *Nooooooooooo, say it ain't so*

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Weatherbug is showing 48 degrees. My understanding is this is technically....I think the word is SUMMER - well, at least until Sept. 21. Then I went to the weather channel site and checked on the average lows for this month and found they gradually drop from 55 - 44 degrees during the month of September for my zip code.

I guess I didn't pay as much attention to temperature and time of year until getting more involved with gardening.

I wonder if my boss would consider moving our department a zone further south?? This year was rough - it wasn't spring until May and it becomes Fall-like in early September. That leaves 4 months of good gardening weather - that's just not enough.

Looks like this weekend is serious digging time to get the non-hardy bulbs and tubers out of the ground.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

It was 42º when I got up... we're up to 44º now. It's too soon! I wait until frost hits most of the tenders before I start digging... Except for brugs and passion flowers. You don't want frost to get them.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

we have hit 43 here already-the low 40s several times already!
i HATE it! but we are in the 80s the past few days so i guess thats a good thing-10 degrees ABOVE normal for this time of yr.
I want my summer back!

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

LOL when you said 48 degrees I thought you meant centigrade and I was going to sympathise! Now I know you mean farenheight Im not so jealous! :)We Brits know what it is like not to get a decent summer!! :))

In the UK we have sunshine and showers but it is still very mild.

Coupland, TX(Zone 8a)

80 Degrees here this morning, and humid too.
Ya'll bundle up...BBRRR

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

We are supposed to have low 80s for the next few days until Saturday with lows in the 60s. Starting Sunday we go back to the 70s/50s we had last week. Ummm, where was summer??

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Even we have hit a few cool mornings, was down to 64 night before last, could do without the AC. Actually slept with the windows open.......aha...was so nice but short lived...back in the 80's + and very humid.....we won't have to worry about the F word for a few more months..... Yall keep warm... :o)

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

my toes is freezing!!!

Coupland, TX(Zone 8a)

Notmartha,
Should I send you some socks, I won't be needing them anytime soon :)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

We already had frosts in Northern areas in Finland last week.. And it was pretty cold here too, it was lowest 32 F at night. Yesterday it was a great day, for weather, around 72°F and no clouds in the sky whole day. Today it was a bit cooler, and getting cooler by weekend.. At least it's warmer now than it was last year the same time.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Next 5 days we'll do 52/80 thing. Beautiful, but getting that odd feeling like I always do as fall approaches. Can't quite explain it - melancholy in a way.

Guess it'll be time late October to start planting the bulbs!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

It's 73 degrees here this morning. Some clouds and a light breeze. Absolutely perfect. Of course, some storms are heading our way, but they're much needed. I love this time of year.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

It was 41 degrees here this morning, yesterday was 46 low, high was 72. That is a 30 degree drop from a week ago. It was 102 degrees at the fairgrounds when i was entering my things. That was tooooo hot, this is toooo cold. never satisfied. I'm not ready for fall, don't even have my greenhouse cleaned and i need to start moving things inside. Donna

Lindale, TX(Zone 8a)

Good morning. It's 72 degrees now with a high of 91 expected.
Thunderstorms predicted for tomorrow and Friday! Wouldn't you know it, we need the rain, but I am having the exterior of my house painted this week and I could do without the rain until that is finished. Don't look for frost here until November or so.

Getting cold here at night too, but warms up nicely during the day. I'm thinking we will have a frost by the end of September, but then a nice indian summer for another month or so. Just my prediction, but probably not very accurate.

I wonder if there's a web site that lists frost dates for different areas over the years?

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know if there is one that does a record of year to year this is just an average..... :o)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

It is just tooooooooo soon for this. We have had low 50's in the eve and think I'll bring in the jasmine tonight and perhaps the pineapple before the weekend. Hate to do it yet, but with being away almost every weekend, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thanks Willow, I'm going to check out those links now.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Bringing in the jasmine tonight? SOB, SOB. My two little standards have just bloomed again. I suppose you would also bring in Mandevillas? :(

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I feel so sorry for yall,,,,I have so much more growing season left....right now my plants should really start florshing since the temp. will break soon....Have had the 3 last days in the mid 80's....but you know what....I spent 7 years in Tennessee and I miss the cold......can't wait to get back have 3 more years to stay here and then we can go home........ :O(

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Don't forget other tender things like alocasias and epicias.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

sbarr, don't mourn that 4 months of good gardening weather.. we're lucky to get 3! Our last danger of frost is early June, and by September 1st, the flowers are starting to look seedy, and most of the veggies are either blown or ready to harvest.

We've had some night temps in the mid to upper 30's, but usually in the 40's. We could have a hard frost at any time. When that occurs, I start dumping pots and cleaning beds in earnest, though the weather may warm again until early October. We generally get hard freezes and flurries some time after that.

It's 87 deg here right now and going to get hotter.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Getting wedding pics together so jasmine will wait till tomorrow but no later 53 at night here and that is close to the limit for the jasmine an pineapple and banana and orange, tuberose just ready to bloom and it may have to bloom inside. Sorry Dea, but better here than AK !

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

Yeah BUT some of the most important gardening efforts take place from now until the snow flies. almost time to clean up the veggie garden, divide and re-plant perennials and till up a spot for the Garlic to go in. (Also get van ready for trip south lol).

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

all my brugs have been out and cannas and tuberose,gingers,EE,mandevillas,jasmines-they are all fine!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Well, at least I don't feel quite so badly:

Yep - can still fry eggs on concrete here in Texas......

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Here in Alaska, we could have chilled meat in our front yard this AM. It warmed into the 50's during the day, but I am really in button down mode now. All plants need to be put away for winter soon!
