what bed?

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

We have had such bad luck choosing a mattress. We ordered one for one bed and thought it would work out fine but it ended up being too soft and constantly has to be turned over and over and gives DH a backache.

The next bed was purchased for 4 times the cost of the first one and VERY firm and I discovered while on vacation, it's the culprit in my severe shoulder and neck pain.

Arrrrrgh!

We don't know how to buy a bed that will work for us. I have fibro type pain and my knee still gives me fits at night plus I have always been an extremely restless sleeper and have restless leg syndrome. DH has sleep apnea and uses a CPAP machine but otherwise is a rock once he crashes to snooze land.

What do you sleep on? How well do you like it? Would you get it again?

I need helllllp!!!

Thanks
Janie

Good question,Janie, we bought a new bed a few years ago. Our intention was to get a pillow top but ended up with a firm mattress but that was too firm so we added egg crates. Now it is comfortable. My hubby needed something for his back too. I wish we would have tried the pillow top. I have often wondered about those craftmatic where you can adjust each side according to each individual needs.

The one that intrigues me is the Sleep Number bed. The best sleep I ever had was a water bed, which conforms to your body so beautifully. It was a waveless and nice and firm. I'm almost ready to get that again but they are heavy and unwieldy and a pain in the butt if you ever move (which I hope I never do).

I think the sleep number thing is an air filled version of the water bed...

anyone have one?

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Yes, I think you are thinking of what I was thinking when I said craftmatic.Yes, I would love to hear from someone who has this bed too. I have heard they are kind of expensive.

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

I just priced a "system" - next to the bottom of the line... and it would be about $1200 out the door. Almost double what we paid for the set we are so unhappy with.

But - it's guaranteed for 20 years (ours is 10) and they have a guarantee if you hate it after 30 days and we have a LOCAL store where we can go try it out so no shipping and handling just delivery charges...

so...

I think we're gonna go try it out.

Still looking for input though... Who's out there?

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Janie what size of bed is the $1200 priced one? We spent $1000 on our last set and it was a king sized one.So that $1200 doesn't sound too bad.

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

It's queen size. Here is the link:

We bought one of these beds several years ago before they went digital and we have loved it. Our friends bought one and they don't like it. But with them they did not buy the one that is adjustable on each side for individual comfort and he likes a hard bed and she likes a soft one so I really think that may be the problem.
When we got ours they had a 60 day free home trial. The warrenty is very good and we have had very good and fast service from Select Comfort. After about 6 years we had to have them send us a new side for my side since a hole came in the seam. There was no charge and I didn't have to send mine back for the return.
I have always wondered though if I would have liked the Tempur-pedic mattress better though for my fibro pain. Just wish we had tried both before we bought so I could have seen which we liked better.
Good luck and hope you get some great sleep soon.

Howie and I went to a Select Comfort shop (aka Sleep Number Beds) and tried one out. To us, they felt like air mattresses nomatter how much padding there was on the top. The salesperson had us start out with the most expensive one, and then try the two step-downs. Bad move! The plushest one still let us feel the tubes of air beneath us.

We ended up going back to The Original Mattress Factory. They're inexpensive compared to the Sealy's, Serta's, etc. We paid $899 for our king set, which was their second-highest priced set (the top of the line was $999, but we didn't want so much pillow-top).

Best thing is, they really hold up! My MIL sleeps on the full-size bed we bought from OMF 10 years ago, and it is wonderful, still. We had to buy a king because the place we moved to had a tight corner that a full-size box spring wouldn't navigate. What a sacrifice...LOL. I can't believe we ever slept on a full!

Our Select Comfort does not feel at all like tubes of air or an air mattress. We have the top of the line pillow top and bought it as a slightly blemished one and have not been unhappy with that either. When I had to have the new mattress I asked how much a new pillow top was for the bed and the lady nicely sent a new one of those at no extra charge.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I could feel a dip in between the tubes. At any rate, it didn't feel good to Howie's back, and that's the main factor in our bed shopping. He's got a lump where they did the bone fusion on his vertebrae, so that part's tender to a lot of stimuli.

Well I don't know what to do. I am starting to have some fibro pressure points acting up again (after a nice remission of that pain after the anesthesia from my knee surgery in Jan/Feb) and I wake up in agony because of neck and shoulder pain. I've never been a good sleeper... and lately the slightest pressure is painful

What about a water bed? I have no problem finding the water bed mattresses themselves but have drawn a blank as far as the wooden frame needed to support it. Any ideas on this? Should I post this as a separate thread (or just figure it out and quit bugging folks about such things??)..?

Thanks again for your insights y 'all

It will help us figure it out.

Love
Janie

DH & I have used waterbed for years now. I know it seems dated, but they seem to help our back problems the best. Only issue is that DH & big dog sometimes displace water so much that I don't get the proper support. So, sometimes I kick them out of the room to get full support and a solid nights sleep.

Good luck, JanieJoy! BTW, don't know why it is difficult to find the frames for waterbeds, but we've encounterd the exact problem. Guess they are really out of style. There's a place in England that sells them via web, but I'm still looking in the U.S. or Canada for our DS. If you find any good leads, please LMK. And, I'll do likewise :)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

You might find frames in the newspaper classifieds. You may end up getting the whole bed, but they'll probably be cheap and you can always discard the mattress if it's not what you want. If you just want a simple frame, maybe you or someone you know could build one. It's pretty much just a big shallow box on a platform, after all. You can do simple, or more elaborate, like this: http://www.scrollsaw.com/uc105.htm

On a sidenote I think you'll find amusing, when I was searching for the phrase waterbed frame plans I found this link. Somehow, I think this page is done with no human intervention. I don't think these frames would do the job! ;)

Great link, GW ~ thanks :) That is what we like, nothing outrageous looking. DH might be willing to do this one as it really isn't all that complicated.

Your waterbed frames link is too funny ~ that type of thing happens to me, too, on google and ebay!

After trying for several years to get accustomed to sleeping on a regular mattress again, I got a waterbed again a few years ago. Best sleep I have ever had, barring none.

I found one at a garage sale (queen size) for $10. That included the liner, heater, mattress, everything.

I also have severe muscle/nerve problems, and no type of conventional mattress worked for me.

There is a local chain, Waterbeds 'n' Stuff, that still carries them. My only problem is trying to find sheets that fit.

edited because I somehow doubled my post, sorry

Waterbeds n Stuff, huh? How far are you from me???
I did find a website that sells them pretty reasonably, headboard and the entire thing... I really did sleep the best on the waterbed... loved it! But we'll need a waveless so my DH doesn't feel like he's "on the sea" as he described it, LOL

Here is the link to that.

BTW, I found waterbed sheets by accident at WalMart the other day... and there are LOTS of them on the web. If you want me to hunt up a few links I'd be happy to do that for you, Lupie

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Janie, I am within 100 miles of you. Columbus is in the geographic center of the state ;D

Do you have Waterbeds 'n' Stuff by you too? They also sell sheet sets, but they are in the $80-$100 range. Outrageous price for sheets!

Our Wal-mart doesn't carry them -- at least they didn't last fall. Gonna check again soon.

$69.95 here for 200 thread count...
$79.95 for jersey knit *mmmmmm... my favorite!

JanieJoy, I as I said have been away from internet for more than 10 days so didn't read about your bed-mattress problem. I bought a Select Comfort mattress more than 12 years ago and have been more than satisfied with it. Don't feel any thing other than a mattress. Since there is only me to sleep on the bed I have only the single control. Once i found my comfort zone I probably don't start the little compressor more than once or twice a year. I love it. Donna Hope you find one you like

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

GW, I love your search page. Isn't it funny what these machines come up with for us sometimes?

I don't feel the sides of the mattress either on our Select Comfort. The water bed we had used to hurt my arms from Fibropain and I woke up with a very stiff body many many times a year. With the Select Comfort mattress I don't ever wake up stiff. I too only use the air compressor a few times a year and that is mainly when DH is out of town and I have to make up for his weight on the bed.

Also love those jersey sheets! Yummy to sleep on t-shirt fabric.

Lupy, I think we'll pick a day to travel to Columbus to visit your water bed store there. We used to have them here, but they've all closed. Not enough business I suspect. Anyway, thanks for letting us know as I had temporarily given up hope and thought we'd be ordering online.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Quite often you can find waterbeds at garage sales. I've found several of them for friends kids who wanted them.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I had a ceiling fall on my back 20 years ago and for years
couldn't find a mattress that would let me have a good
nights sleep. We finally bought a waveless water mattress
set and I have never look back. :)

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Morph, you're coming back to Columbus! Please come visit again! Just let me know when you will be here!

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Maybe Lupy :) Today we have to be in Cinci and I found a "Big Sur Waterbed" store when I searched google. We're gonna take a look since it's only about 15 minutes from the field. If I come to Columbus, you'll bet I'll visit ☺

St. Petersburg, FL(Zone 10b)

I agree with Lilypon! No wave water bed. However, we added a 2-3 inches foam egg-crate pad to the top of it. Been using it for years... This is one item they will have to pry out of my dead cold hands to get it away from me! LOL!!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

I've had backaches caused by bad beds ever since I was a teenager. After I got married we always had a piece of plywood under my side of the bed (coil spring mattress) but then I had pressure points and sometimes still had a backache. We had a water bed for many years and I was comfortable in that, then one night it developed a major leak, made a big mess, we moved into the guest room with it's ordinary mattress. Ouch, it didn't take many nights to be really tired of that so we got a cheap airbed that was available in a local store, it did ok for a couple of years. When it got too stretched and the air chambers separated inside (still held air but had high and low spots) we finally went to a Select Comfort store and bought one. Wow! It is so comfortable! I sleep much better on it, no bachache! For the first time in about 40 years I can sleep on my stomach or on my back. There is a trial period so you really have nothing to loose, if you don't like it you send it back and owe nothing.

Santa Clara, CA(Zone 9a)

We purchased a Select Comfort in February and just love it. We had to do something different this time, the last time we purchased a hard mattress for my DH--he was happy and I was uncomfortable the minute we got it. I love the fact that we both have separate controls. When it is cold I like to make the mattress indented and I think it warmer and conforting.
