At this moment i am watching the LIVE birth of mosquito fish!!!
It's amazing!
I can see every contraction, then the little fish come into the world!
Had to fend my gramps off, as he was tapping the glass,LOL.
AMAZING!
Five so far......
Baby Fish!!!
I didn't realize they had live birth! I bet that's neat to watch.
YEah they do.
And it's oh so neat too, *sarcasim* when you count six babies, go back two minutes later and are down to three.
SHE ATE HER BABIES!!!!!
Ohhh I'm mad, I was already picking out names for them!
LOL.
hehe, other than the canibalisim, it was really neat!
Mosquito fish make great aquarium fish, they have alot of personality, they look like common guppies, but have more personality.
You can get Mosquito fish free from the government I think.
To "controll" mosquito populations.hehe.
I jsut catch mine wild.
She can have up to I think 100 babies, giving live birth to all of them.
They are as long as a tic tac when born, that's really big to be having up to 100!
you ought to get a breeding trap crimson that way she cant eat them! bad luck but I am glad that you saw it. It is a wonderful experience to watch baby fish being born.
Pretty neat Huh? We used to raise tropical fish, including "livebearers" and egg-layers. I actually still have an 8mm clip of a pair of betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish) spawning. (For those of you born after the ice age had passed, 8mm was a format for making home movies before the VCR was invented). Male Bettas prepare a floating bubble nest by blowing coated bubbles into a mass at the water surface. They then mate with the female by wrapping themselves around her and sqeezing the eggs out a few at a time. fertilization occurs at this point and the eggs are blown into the nest and tended by daddy until they hatch. Other live bearers in addition to mosquito fish include guppies, mollies, swordtails and platys. Fortunately, unlike many egg-layers, most live bearers are not cannibalistic
Awesome kiki,I used to breed bettas as well.
I had a couple DT's and HM's.They were awesome.
I'm working on creating the perfect betta tank now.
Hopefully by late next year it will be built.
Then I'll have a river tank and a betta tank.
Psi, I was gonna use the net, but got lazy and thought since i read they dont normally eat their young, I'd take the chance.I had removed her from the community tank and into a glass, she was just too fast for me! :O:>.

I wish I coud see a picture. Sounded great right up til the end then too sad. Why would the fish eat the babies? Do they not realize they are their own and just see them as food?
thanks
Wow Crimson, I'm impressed! Did you ever breed any of the cichlids?
I had Kribensis, which are cichlids, for awhile. You can't STOP them from laying eggs.
I got the bettas in austin texas, a breeder of "top quality" bettas sent her culls there.Never really "got into" breeding them.Just tried it and quit after a while.
I'll start up again when I have a better set up.
I really like the Crown Tails.:D.
No.I never got into cichlids really.
*thinking on what fish ive messed with*
I had an electric blue cichlid once, but it died.
Mostly tropicals.Tetras and the like.
I think my gold fish are laying eggs, but not sure.hehe.
Do they lay them on things? Like lily pads?
White little eggs in the pot and stuck to leaves.
as you can tell, im not really a "fish breeder" LOL!

Oh tsavo...you are tooo much!! Next time I'm your way guess I need an empty memory card for all the new and changed projects. LOL
Hey indashade whats a kribensis? I have spawned Angelfish, jack dempsey and firemouth cichlids(all "common" names). but never heard of the kribensis.
They're dwarf cichlids:

Yup. they look like the typical cichlid. Great website BTW
When I kept fish, my husband could never get the names right. He used to refer to my Kribensis as "speckled three-horned Cradenza's". And then we would laugh like crazy! :-D
I miss having fish. I had nice saltwater tanks at one time, but when we moved to our new house the water just seemed different. My tanks always looked [deleted], and I finally tore them down and sold them.
Crimsonsavo heres a link to goldfish breeding

Thanks Kiki!
i have witnessed my swordtails (livebearers) spawning their babies. it truly is an amazing sight to see.
i had the same problem, though, with the adults eating the newborns. i think there just must be something about live bait to them that is more attractive than continuing their species! of course, i'm sure it's much different in their natural habitat where there is more camouflage for the babies to hide in, and more under current to carry them off so they don't get eaten right out of the womb.
but for me, if i want to keep the majority of the babies, i have to babysit the tank and catch them as they are born. (this can take hours!) then i put them in a little slotted plastic box that floats at the top of the tank.
even though it is a little dismaying to see my fish - seemingly *GROWN ADULTS* - eat their young, i still am fascinated by the nature of fish, and by nature in general!
LOL, Pangie. Talk about eating fresh bread right out of the oven!
