why planting bulbs NOW is so important

I hate to harp on about planting bulbs at the right time of year but it has to be done.

Bulbs need to rehydrate and grow a set of new roots between now and the first frosts. This goes towards an excellent show next year.

here are two photos I took just now that show bulbs root in late summer. They were left in pots from this time last year so had to be moved to a permanent position.

These are summer flowering Narcissus 'Summer Cups'

hmm, yes, but the problem is getting the bulb companies to realize that it may say I'm zone 6 now and should have open weather until well into November, but the reality is that, heaven forbid it should happen again, we sometimes have snow cover from early October until early May. For some reason, they think that the proper time to send me bulbs is from mid October to late October and try as I might, I cannot convince them otherwise. Perhaps I shold give them all a jangle of an email and see if it helps.

Although I say first frosts it may be just cold weather.

We have an excellent bulb supplier, Paul Chritian, here in the UK who takes in orders and then sends out bulbs when they need to be planted. Garden centres here now have all their bulbs in stock.

Is it too late to dig up daffodils, divide and then replant?

I figure the worst that can happen iis they won't flower in the first spring. But after that they would be fine anyway.

t-g, I've done daff bulbs this time of year and the flowering the first year was limited, but they bounced right back after that. I'm planning to dig some and take to my daughter later in the month. Sometimes plants just have to put up with our schedules, but it is better for them in the spring, as Mark said.

Thanks. Mark's answer delights the procrastinator in me. I can wait until next year.

hmm, well, I'm doing it now becuase of the procrastinator in me who didn't do it last spring!
