As you all know we started remodeling our house this spring.
We don't get much done with all the gardening & markets.
The weather cooled a bit so our Labor day weekend was building time. We took out this old dining room window on sunday, started building a bay window.
House again!
I took this picture at 7:30 PM Monday. All closed in. Lots of finish work to do but at least the rain & bugs can't get in. We bought 4 single hung windows & stick-built the whole thing. Will get a picture from outside later. DW is already planning which plants will go in here. (It is south facing!)
Bernie
Wowweee! Great job, and so fast! That'll sure hold a lot of plants over the winter.
Bernie, how fabulous! Can you come over and build one for me? We got a price estimate of $4,000 to have one installed by a carpenter :(
Actually that sounds like a good price. By the time all the siding is put on & the interior finished, that's about what I was thinking for a price. We are going to put can lights in the ceiling & some outlets below.
I used four windows, rough openning 30" X 48" for this.
We used the existing openning which was 102" wide.
Lupy, go for it, you will be happy & it also will increase the value of your home!
Bernie
Wow! I always wanted a Bay window! That is going to be so great!
Thats beautiful, are you going to fill it with plants?
meem
Are you doing all this work yourself?
Of course, My son & I. We are carpenters & cabinet makers by trade. Just like gardening better so we do that full time, build when we have time.
Bernie
Very nice we remodeled not long ago and did the end wall that way except the center window is ten feet wide and the floor is open. Two four tube flouresents are hidden from view by a little pony wall from the ceiling.
Ours was built for Linda to sit in and sew her quilts in and she really enjoys it. Since the room was being made bigger anyway it really wasn't costly but like you know it enhances the marketability and value. Again nice touch Ernie
We have been getting some things done as time allows. We actually got to install cabinet doors this evening! Still have a couple of cabinets to build. They will have to wait as the shop will soon be full of cabinets for the house we are building. We are building all the kitchen cabinets, 2 bath vanities, laundry room cabinets, & a linen cabinet. Also all the door jams for the entire house will be made in our shop. Everything will match, all oak, should look like a million!
Bernie
Bernie,
It all looks great. The sunset coming through that bay window is just beautiful!

Looks great, Bernie! You give me hope about our remodel. I'm hoping to sell the original Geneva metal cabinets for a little budget padding. We're probably going with the Mill's Pride ready-to-assemble cabinets from Home Depot.
We have been going great guns the last few days. My son is up on the roof getting the new shingles on. I installed new windows in the living room & office.
Today I was busy doing some finishing of our entry.
Tomarrow we are back at the new house we are building. We will work on that pretty much full time now. We have the deck about done. We are going to start siding next thing. Will be back inside as soon as electric & plumbing are done.
We need our own house done by Christmas, as it is our turn to host the family get together.
Oh well, I will probably make it! Last time I had a deadline, I was finishing up some painting at 9AM & guests arrived at 11 AM! Wow that was kinda close when I think about it!
This is one of the new office windows. This room will be stripped, insulated, new sheetrock & a lower ceiling.
Bernie
Hey, I actually got some siding on. I am using vinyl, but not all the J channels & stuff. I want this to look close to original, so am making all the trim around the windows & doors. I am rabbiting the boards so the ends of the siding goes behind. Working out good so far, abig challenge will be the bay window with all it's silly angles!
Son & SIL got almost done with the new shingles. SIL helped on Sunday.
We ran short of shingles by about 10 pieces. Seems the engineer,(me) didn't figure quit right! We will pick up some more tomarrow, then we can get all the scaffolding down.
Bernie
Looks better without the "J" channel, Bernie. Rabbets work fine!
It's looking very good, you guys really go for it when you get into a project. Ours always took much longer. Living in the mess of a slow motion remodel for weeks and weeks at a time got pretty old. Hope you get yours all back together before the holidays.
Love the project you are doing a great job !!!!! Love the bay window I wish we had thought about the lights when we did ours. Keep posting I have almost worked up the nerve to start on my kitchen cupboards you are a great encouragement.
Sandy
That's looking terrific, Bernie.
Going to finish painting living room today, pull out the old carpet.
Post a picture later.
It looks great Bernie! I love the cat collection too. I am slowly getting a collection of those too.
Wow Bernie! You've been a busy little beaver....:) You must have sold an awful lot of tomatoes this year.....I can only dream.......enjoy your "new" dwelling....Kathy
Well the price is right when you do all the work yourself, & look for deals & do things from scratch.
Self-employment is a major factor also. Part of the money we are receiving for building the house is paying for ours. Cool no loan to worry about!
Bernie
Joan, cats are all over the place. There are upwards of 400 figurines, paintings, prints, stuffed cats, & even a couple of beanies!
Bernie
That's always cool! I piece mealed my commercial kitchen, bought things for it or fixed it whenever I had a couple extra bucks. It is a nice feeling to look at it and know I don't owe a penny on it! :)
I like that built-up sink corner. I've always loved that kind of design, with a nice spot for a plant. This looks SO good.
