molly, follow the top hose off the radiator and it should lead you to the housing for the thermostat. It doesn't really look like a thermostat that you may expect ;)

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Ok will try that now.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Whaaaaaa We still can't find it! I have done net searches and looked in the owners manual and we even have a repair manual. Can't find it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sooo mad!!!!
HELP!!!!!

As one can tell by looking at the pics, the motor is in there sideways so there for it is harder to find it :(

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

mollybee, I don't know what else to say. I wish I was there and we'd find it in a heartbeat. Maybe going to the Auto Store might help if you ask for one and look to see what it looks like so you'll know what it is you're looking for. It may have been infront of your nose the whole time and you just not know it

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I honey I'm sure it is there somewhere, just putting my fingers on it is the hardest part!
All 3 of my kids have been looking with us and they point and say is this it?? Is this it?? Is that it??
Arrrgggghhhh I keep saying I DON'T KNOW!!!!
LOL Time to get away from it though, because it is making me tooooo ill!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

take a breather, I got so frustrated with mine that I was throwing stuff........LOL
Not a good thing so let it be for now and then when you get a chance run to a Auto store like AutoZone or something and look at one

columbia, SC(Zone 8b)

you ladies are so industrious! I would never think of working on my own car. Just not mechanically inclined that way. Afraid of doing more damage!LOL

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Will do. I guess since it was going to be kinda easy to fix and might even be a quick fix, I was overjoyed and really wanted to find it so I could get it fixed.

Time to tend to the cats.
Thanks for the help Susan!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

No problem Molly

Mollybee, if you're going to buy another one at an auto parts store, ask someone there if they can help you.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I got plum bum fuzzled today trying to find that thing! I was sooo ill when I came in its a wonder I didn't lose my head.
Guess I'll have to put it off until Tuesday since tomorrow is Labor Day.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Why didn't you post "bum fuzzled" in the down home sayings? I haven't heard that in years!

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

LOL! Just forgot all about it until I was it! LOL

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Girl, you are too funny......LOL

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

LOL I have been following this thread and thought I should throw in my suggestion. I don't buy Chilton's manuals anymore since I found the Haynes Automotive Repair Manuals. They are much more complete and have saved us a ton of money on repairs. Molly my manuals (I looked at all three we own) would tell you EXACTLY where to look for the thermostat and how to replace it. We keep the manuals in each car so if we do break down on the road we can fix the vehicle ourselves most times. The manual is put out in North America by:

Haynes North America, Inc.
861 Lawrence Drive
Newbury Park California 91320

and in England by:

Haynes Publishing Group
Sparkford Nr Yeovil
Somerset BA22 7JJ England

The price is under $15 at our local auto parts store. You might go look at them and I think you will buy one.

Hope this helps you.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Yep, Got one of those for my car too.
Its:
GM Buick Skylark Oldsmobile Calais Pontiac Grand Am
Buick Somerset Oldsmobile Achieva HAYNES

Only problem in looking thru this book is it shows a totally different motor than mine but it shows exactly where the thermostat is on that one!
Seems mine is suppose to be inside the water pump! We can't even find the water pump!

O well, its not like the car just quit yesterday or anything. It actually I have only driven it about 6 times in the last year because of it breaking down on me and when I'd get it home I'd vow not to drive it again until it was fixed. It'd sit out in the yard for a couple of months, then we'd get up enough money to have it looked at..the guy would call his self fixing it then I'd go get it and usually only get to drive it a couple of times and itd mess up again! Sooooo guess until someone comes along that knows more about it than dh and I it will have to just keep sitting there :(
I sure miss having a car :(

If I remember correctly it is located right behind the oil dip stick. I saw the oil dip stick in one of the pictures. Sorry I haven't been checking back but had grandkids that I don't get to see that often here yesterday and I spent time with them. Here's an idea that might get it solved. Call auto zone or a parts store and ask where it is located. They are usually helpful. I'll call tomorrow to Nappa here and see if I can find out for you. All three of my sons worked there when they were growing up so I probably can find the right answer. Sure hope it's not in the water pump. Mine was easy to find. Sorry I haven't been more help. Jim

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Molly, my husband said the best her remembers, it is located on the block. He said if you follow the hose off the radiator, it should take you to the box where it is housed.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Far as we can tell the biggest hose that is coming off the radiator and followed it to the motor, but there is tons of stuff that has to come off just to be able to get to it.
So this isn't going to be a simple fix like I had though. :(
Thanks for the help ya'll.
I'll go back out and check close to the dipstick Jim and let ya know if I find it there.

It sounds like you need a factory rep to get involved, because your car doesn't have the proper engine. It might be difficult to get one to respond, but it's certainly worth a try. Many years ago, I had chronic problems with a Lincoln, and finally someone suggested this. I don't recall all of the events leading up to it, but finally I did get a district manager who arranged for a rep to come from the assembly plant. It turned out that some of the new-at-the-time emission control apparatus was a huge part of some problems and an "electronic brain" was the rest. I still had a lot of expense, but they paid for most of the switchout, reimbursed me for the numerous brains I had already bought and provided me with a rental car for a month while they re-invented my Mark V.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Trust me at this point in the game, I am sooo ready to just trade it off and be done with it! Just have to get it running enough to take it to the car lot.
Comes really really close to being a lemon in my book!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Good luck Molly on your car woes. Don't you just hate car troubles? Of course, I have them all the time because we drive older models. Sometimes I think that it is easier than paying a huge car payment every month until I have to pay a big repair bill. Don't know which is better.
