Are there any kinds of plants that can't be traded?

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

I'm thinking specifically about restrictions on plants, such as plants that are invasive in some areas - or - perhaps some countries that don't allow certain plants.

How do I know what can and can't be traded?

I personally feel that this is up to the traders to look up for themselves as the restricted and prohibited lists for each country (perhaps even the noxious weed lists for each US state) can change quite quickly. These can be found on the country or state's government websites in relation to plant health regulations.

I know I can't send any beetroot, Sorbus and Pyracantha plants or seeds outside of the UK and there are prohibitions of certain plants coming in from various countries (mainly fruit and veg) but until I look at DEFRA's site again I can't be absolutely certain.

Baa is correct - invasive plants in one area are not in another. It's up to the traders (especially the person requesting the seeds or plants) to know whether a plant is permitted (or even prudent) to grow in their country or geographic area.

Some plants and seeds are illegal to sell or grow, and we discourage traders from requesting or offering them within our exchange forum or on their tradelists. Then there are plants that are in a "gray area" - for example, certain poppy seeds, some salvias, etc. My personal view is that if a plant is commonly grown for its ornamental value as much or more than for any illicit purpose, I don't worry too much about people asking/offering seeds or plants. If a plant is grown mainly for its hallucinogenic or narcotic effects and it's not legal to grow or sell, we shouldn't be trading them here.

You probably ought not to be trading seeds or plants of Cannabis sativa.

Unless you have a genuine interest in making hemp rope.

And have a licence to grow it (if you are the tradee!)
