Can I use all capital letters when I post to a thread?
Is it okay to type everything in CAPITAL LETTERS?
Now Shoe, why didn't you answer my question?
Actually the answer to the question is:
When you use all capitol letters when your on the internet it means you are yelling or screaming. So it is usually not a good idea to use all caps when speaking to someone.
WELL YOU CAN BUT IT MAKES IT REALLY DIFFICULT TO READ WHEN SOMEONE WRITES IN ALL CAPS. PLUS IT IS THE WRITTEN EQUIVALENT TO SHOUTING, WHICH CAN BE CONSTRUED AS OFFENSIVE.
otoh some users type in all lower case letters.if u do that and u use a lot of modern slang/shorthand to express urself it can be very diff. for others 2 read.
As you can see from the above examples, writing in all capitals (or all lower case) isn't recommended for obvious reasons. Less obvious (but equally important) is to remember that readers can only read what we write, and not know how we might have meant it. Capitalizing certain words can be effective for additional emphasis, and text that is properly capitalized and punctuated is still the easiest way for most of us to comprehend the written word.
Breaking up your thoughts into paragraphs also helps your readers. It might be easy to sit down and type your thoughts without the hassle of parsing it into sentences and paragraphs, but take pity on your audience: come up for a breath every now and then, so they can, too ;o)
MOLLYBEE-----I'VE HAD A STROKE AND HAVE TO WRITE IN CAPITALS.HOPE NO ONE IS OFFENDED.BECAUSE I'M CERTAINLY NOT SHOUTING AT ANYONE.
dixiehil, you're not offending anyone. Will read your posts anyday, anyway! Deal? ô¿ô
Terry,
Maybe someone could give dixiehil and others who have eye difficulties the steps which would make their browsers display the posts in a larger font.
I have compassion for those who have difficulty seeing but because MY eyes are so sensitive I have to pass over those posts that are all in caps. I don't want to miss anything someone has to say but I can look at those CAPS only so long.
Thanks
PS Gardenwife? you know how to do that . . .
I have Windows 2000.
At the top of the screen, click VIEW, then scroll down to TEXT SIZE and click it...a menu will appearing and you can then choose what size text you want (small, medium, large, largest). I'm pretty sure that when I had Windows 98 it was either the same or very similar.
Also, when you are viewing your Desktop, right-click on it somewhere other than on an icon and choose ACTIVE DESKTOP, then CUSTOMIZE DESKTOP. In the next window go to SETTINGS, and make your SCREEN AREA 640 X 480. Then click OK.
That is also a big help.
I agree with Terry using all upper or lower case makes it much harder to read.
Those who have disabilities have no choice and I think people will understand.
That my 2 cents worth.
Paul
There is a colleague of mine who used to hand-write all letters in capitals. If I remember correctly, he passed his exams that way. It went on for many years and he was in this habit when I joined the office 21 years ago. Some years later, our then Director, it seems, was annoyed at this peculiar habit and had hinted him about his dislike. We later saw him practising the normal handwriting which he now uses and he is now our head of the department. And one thing I must tell. His writing speed with that style was breathtaking!
Thanks for the info, Shoe
I think I will make my fonts larger
I humbly amend my thoughts with this footnote:
I hope that none of us will take (or cause) offense when we come across someone who cannot type using the proper combination of upper/lower case letters.
For those who are in that situation, please bear with us. You're bound to get a few well-meaning suggestions to turn off your CAPS LOCK button, but once other readers are made aware of your situation, it shouldn't be an issue to post in all CAPS if that's what you need to do - we're very glad to have you interacting with us here at Dave's Garden!
I too have eye problems and have followed you instructions. What a difference enlarging the type makes for me. Maybe now I can stay on DG longer and more often. Thanks a bunch!
Good Iowagal, That means we should be seeing more of you then!
Glad to have ya here :)
Iowagal,
Glad this helped you; wasn't sure if it would but your type is so much more delightful to read now.
Thank you, friend
A kind soul directed me to this forum and I thank her for doing so I don't intend to yell at anyone. After she told me about the caps thing I replied with all lower case. Now I find out thats not ok either.
Truth of it is this is the first chat group I have tried to take part in. Also true is I just don't know how to operate this machine right. This has taken me about 30 minutes so far. Because I peck the wrong button I either erase what I just did or don't realize what I did wrong and do it again.
So I will try to do better but you know I bet I operate a lot of machines that a lot of computer folks would be intimadated by.
Please be patient for I am really a perfectionist who fails but I will get it. At least good enough to blend a little.
eweed - your reply was perfect. Consider yourself "blended"! :)
It happens to the best of us though. As you can see when I first signed up here I too was using all cap letters, because look at my screen name! Its all in Caps!! I have often wanted to ask Dave to change it for me, but have just never gotton around to it.
I started off doing the same thing though, so I know exactly what you mean.
There are still some that use the wrong keys when they type and then they click on send instead of preview...therefore they don't see the type o's. There are several folks that are pretty well known for there type o's though and I could name a few. But I guess that is what makes them that much more special :)
Eweed, I started a thread on the Computer forum about your typing concerns. If you click here http://davesgarden.com/t/400218/ it will take you to that thread. A thread is a topic that somebody starts in one of the forums and other people reply to it. If you are interested in a thread and want to keep track of it, just above the Author box at the top of each thread you will see the words 'Watch Thread'. If you click on that, this thread will show on the top of your home page everytime someone else posts to it. (When you click on 'Watch Thread' the words change to 'Unwatch Thread'. If you ever decide you are done watching it you can click on 'Unwatch Thread' and it will no longer appear on your home page. However, you don't have to ever stop watching. You can leave it that way forever so that if someone posts to it a year later you will know.) When a thread that you are watching shows up on your home page, click on it to see what is new. To go to the latest entry, click on 'skip to new'. That way you don't have to re-read what you have already seen.
And remember, if you don't understand something someone has posted be sure and tell them. The motto around here is "There are no dumb questions, just dumb answers".
About the time I was going to give up and return to my hobby work shop help appeared on the horizon. Several nice folks offered a few clues and my wife said let me show you a few things. Anyway this is quite a bit better than two days ago.
I would like those who helped me to know I really appreciate your efforts. You know who you are and I am not comfortable with your screen names to the point of trying to type them from memory.
Thanks again Ernie.

Hi eweed, welcome to Dave's garden, (DG) I'm a 2 finger typer too. Just keep on typing and you will soon be as fast as the rest. Well--- as fast as you want to go.
When you want to check your spelling, go to the top of the page & click on tools, then click ieSpell. That will tell you if something is spelled wrong.
We have Spell Check on Dave's? It doesn't work that way on my computer? Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, Lizh. Can you spell check on Dave's Garden?
Weezingreens,at the top of this page, click on tools, then click on "ieSpell" My brain is in (park) this morning , but I think I remember gardenwife told us how to put the isSpell up on tools. Maybe someone can help that has a better memory. Send gardenwife an e-mail.
Thanks, Lizh, I'll rattle Gardenwife's cage. She's such a wealth of good info, isn't she...and so are you!
I did a search on iespell and came up with this:
http://davesgarden.com/search/index.php?forum=&search_text=iespell&limit=0&Search=Search
I was looking for something else when I came a cross this forum. I have downloaded ieSpell so here goes,It works hurray. Being dyslexic it takes me so long to reply,I need books all round me to spell every second word, my typing not to hot either. ieSpell does not pick up capitals, full stops, and comers being in the wrong place or words that are spelt right ,but are wrong . I still have to go over everything.A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL YOU GUYS 4 THE IESPELL.and to know I'm not the only one with a few problems.
Although some people consider typing in all caps "yelling", if you read the content and it isn't abusive, then I don't find that "yelling." However, it does take me twice as long to read all caps. If you type in all caps because you have a condition, hopefully people will understand (at least the ones that are aware of your condition).
