Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

For AOL users, this picture of mine is in the AOL photo of the week contest. You can view it by going to the photo center and then selecting the picture of the week icon. For non-aol users, sorry but it doesn't allow me to add a hyperlink to take you there.

Many thanks to those of you who encouraged me to enter it. Nat

Great Photo, Nat! How'd you get the Hummer to pose?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

What a picture! Congratulations!!!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Priceless Nat! A real winner, who would have thunk!
Does she sit there often or did you just get extremely lucky?

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Nat, that is a great photo indeed! Love it and love those hummers too, both of em.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Wonderful! Serendipity!

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

LOL.....I didn't get the hummer to pose - - - he inspired ME to sit for hours taking rolls of film to get this picture.

This picture was of an immature male (he was just developing red spots on his throat) that would stand guard over my feeder in the back, usually sitting on this plant stake. Nat

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

Wonderful picture :)

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

That photo is a real inspiration to get some pictures of my hummers before they fly south for the winter. Thanks for posting it, I hope it wins the photo contest. Let us know.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Hi Nat. Have you heard yet if you have won the contest? I know this photo is worthy of it.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

I checked this morning and my picture came in a respectable second place. First place went to a great photo of a sleeping dog that was by far the best picture. I was pleased with the 2nd place showing. Nat

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Great, Nat! Not having AOL, I cannot comment on the dog photo, still think yours is wonderful.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Congrats, Nat! Second place is terrific -- I bet they had thousands of entries, too.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Congratulations! Second place isn't bad at all. I can emagine there were a lot of entries and judging them must have been very difficult.

Crossville, TN

Congratulations, Nat....(did you get my email I sent through DG?) Jo

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Congrats again! I have shown your photo to every employee at my office and they all agree - totally amazing!

Thanks guys for all the kind words. It goes to show that if you take thousands and thousands of pictures, you may get lucky and actually take a keeper photo! LOL Nat

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Nat, I was thinking of your picture here the last few days since I have had a hummingbird visiting my newly planted Honeysuckle daily. Today I counted and the poor thing is coming for only four flowers. I hope it grows fast so she can have lots more flowers next year. At least in the front yard she has a few more flowers to eat from. I gave up on having a feeder because I couldn't keep the sugar ants out of it.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Lani, I just planted red honeysuckle this year and I, too, only have a couple of blooms which the hummers appear to love. My plants have grown tremendously this year but have not put out many blooms. We'll have to keep our fingers crossed for next year's blooms!

I had the problem with ants in my feeders until I bought "ant moats". They are little cups that you fill with water that you hang your feeder from. The ants cannot cross the water. It doesn't keep the small bees out of the feeders but it sure eliminates the ants. Also, last year I tried dipping a pipe cleaner in cooking oil and wrapping it around the feeder hanger. This also eliminated the ants - but the pipe cleaners need to be "reoiled" every 2-3 weeks.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Nat, I tried the moats and still these tiny ants got to the sugar water. I also tried painting the hangers with a product called Tangle foot which had worked the two years prior but this year the ants just kept getting stuck in it until they made a bridge over the stuff. I really think they have more of a brain than we give them credit for. lol

I also have that red honeysuckle and yesterday I got a clearance plant of the white one to put nearby for the hummers. It has been so hot that the first plant hasn't grown much as I can't keep water on it for long enough. I pray for rain for next year as right now our pond is starting to go down drastically as the ground water receeds with the rivers going down.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

So glad for you, Nat! I don't use AOL or other "Big Brother" type filters. I like to see the web in all its glory ~ lol!

Congratulations :) Awesome picture! I've had some hummers that have actually sat on the feeder ~ but, alas, not long enough to get camera & return to get their photo :( My vote is that you should have been FIRST place!

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Wow Lani - - you must have some hungry ants up there. I guess you'll just have to settle for pictures.

Thanks Morph, first place here at Daves is better than second place at AOL! I bet your hummers have already left your area. I think my summer hummers have already headed south, and I appear to have a new batch. I hope I can have some time this weekend to sit and watch as they probably will be gone from our area in another week or so.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

We actually saw one yestderday ~ he/she had better get migrating!!!

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Send him/her my way! I keep the feeders going through Oct.

Crossville, TN

We are on the trail for them to migrate to Mexico....but we've quite a few that winters here. Jo

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

You're so lucky, Jo:) Nat, I'll give him (them?) a nudge your way ~ they just wouldn't make it here through the winter and with the cooler weather over the past week, I'm surprised that I saw one at all!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I am still seeing plenty of hummers here. Aren't they just the cutest bird? So tiny and quick.

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Nat, I love that picture~! Congratulations!
