Came across these old ones today:
If on St. Swithin's feast the welkin lours,
And every pent house streams with showers,
Twice twenty days shall clouds their fleeces drain
And wash the pavement with incessant rain.
Or perhaps:
Rain in May brings bread through the year.
A dry May foretells a wholesome year.
Some are real puzzlers:
This rule in gardening never forget, to sow dry and set wet.
A mist in March is a frost in May.
Weather Sayings from Wales and UK
Sow dry and set wet means to not over water seeds when you sow them but ensure that when you plant (set) plants they have plenty of water puddled in the planting hole.
I've not heard of the other except other versions of St Swithens day, thanks!
Ne'er cast a clout afore May is out,
Red sky at night, shepherds delight
Red sky in the morning sheperds warning.
I'm sure there must be loads more
yes I have heard the st swithins one "if it rains ON St swithins day it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights. Some years it seems to do anyway!!
It was only when I read the quote when I figured out St. Swithin's Day is my brother's birthday. Hmmm, wonder if that has anything to do with it? *grin
