After replying to one of Sueones threads about how a hardy geranium suddenly appeared in her garden it got me to thinking. What plants have the birds brought into your garden?
2 plants that come to mind in my garden are a Buddleia and a Berberis - all gifts from the birds! :)
Birds bearing gifts
I have a little Alleghany Serviceberry tree (Amelanchier laevis) that the birds planted for me - the year that I decided I wanted one! I do have lovely birds. they even put it in a most appropriate place. There is also a staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina, R. hirta) that they brought me several years ago.
now wasnt that kind of them! my buddleia was sent to me just as my mother in law wanted me. Took me to the top of the brownie points list straight away ! LOL
I'm not sure if it's the flying gardeners or other critters, but I have too many "gifts" to count. I know they are responsible for the wax leaf ligustrum and some nandina and lantana in the pasture. I think the possums and racoons get credit for the grapes and mesquite, as well as some prickly pear.
Seems like the only "gifts" the birds leave me end up all over my car....
The birdies brought me pansies this year. I have three diferent ones-about 5 plants total. http://davesgarden.com/t/390560/
I have gotten so many gifts from the winged and 4-legged critters through the years.
Bloodroot, Virginia bluebells and Spring Beauty come to mind immediately. Also Sternbergia and Arum bulbs. Two types of colchicums, and a few things that I still can't identify. (I am pretty sure one is inula).
I didn't mention the blackberries, but just having pick most of a quart without leaving my yard, I must say a thank you to those lovely winged creatures! Especially after I threatened to throw rocks at the adolescent robin that was doing his version of annoying robin rap all day long!
seems like nature is doing its job then! spreading its bounty around. Its good to know some good plants end up in our gardens by accident as well as the bad! (all the weeds) LOL
A fellow gardener gave me some seeds he had collected from his 'Goat Poppies'. He claims the neighbor's goat came over and left a few raisins and the Goat Poppies appeared. Now I start those poppies every year and put them on my sale table. They are labeled 'Omar's Goat Poppies'.
I received a nice pink climbing rose, beautyberry, and a beautiful patch of what looks like nana coreopsis that blooms every spring. Linda
and why not Weezin. Last year I found a beautiful pink poppy growing in the abandoned garden of Gads Hill (the old home of Charles Dickens (writer) I havent found an image of it anywhere so I have named it 'Dickens Pink' and have stuck it on my website! :)
Yes, Psilo. I have pinks I dug from the old Seward clinic before they tore it down years ago. They've been passed around in Seward for years without benefit of a name, so I sell them as 'Clinic Pinks'.
We have an avocado tree growing in the backyard from the squirrels and I'm always pulling up walnut trees from the little critters.
Walnuts trees!!!! wow!! All I get are sycamores and Oaks!! :D
