question dave

would it be possible to have a space to write in a members name in the members list to get to that memners page without having to surf every page to find it. for example on the page with members starting with the letter J. in order to find my member page you have to surf several pages to get to my ame. if we could just go to that page for members with first letter of J and type in jcf it would be so much faster.

Just go to davesgarden.com/members/MEMBERNAME and you are there. That's a little shortcut. (Replace MEMBERNAME with the member's name. My member page is davesgarden.com/members/dave )

Having a more intuitive way to do it would be nice, however. Jumping straight to it via the memberlist seems to be the best way - I'll see about it.

Janet - I have my member page bookmarked and right up on my IE links bar (just drag the "E" icon next to the URL down onto the toolbar and it will make a shortcut there). When I want to get to a person's page quickly, I just click that and then replace my membername with the other member's name like Dave said.

Makes it kinda handy having shortcuts to my threads and my member page.

Dave - wonder how hard it would be to come up with some sort of bookmarklet for this sort of thing? I have one that spawns a pop-up where I can enter a word, and it then takes me to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary website. It's written in javascript. I was looking at it and wondering if something like it could be used to spawn a pop-up which would let a person enter a membername, and end up at the member's page. I'm no script writer, though! Check your e-mail, I'll send you the code to look at.

Edited to correct the spelling of Merriam! Guess I shoulda looked that up in my Funk & Wagnalls, huh? ;)

P.S. Some work with Netscape, too. Here's the official bookmarklets site: http://www.bookmarklets.com

Hey - I got one to work! It definitely works with IE 6. I don't know if it works with Netscape, since I haven't reinstalled that yet.

Give it a whirl and see if it works for you! http://www.gardenwife.com/dg/

What happens when you try, Janet?

Well, the feature is in the memberlist now, anyway. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find it.

Oh, well, it was fun getting mine to work. At least it worked on IE. :)

thanks dave

Janet - what did happen when you tried to use the bookmarklet I wrote? I'd like to figure out how to make it work, for myself if no one else. Did the page not come up for you? If that's it, that should be resolved. If it was something else, could you let me know? Thanks, m'am! :)

GW, I'll throw in my own feedback...

When I go there, absolutely nothing happens. Nothing in my status bar or anything. Zip. :) (Gotta love those programs that give no debugging. That, plus the annoyances of javascript).

Well, shoot. I guess it must be because of your browser being Gecko/Netscape. I'm researching more about writing bookmarklets for Netscape. It's been so long since I used Netscape/Mozilla. Is Opera built on the same code?

Janet - do you use Internet Explorer or Netscape?

They're handy little things and I'd like to build some to do various basic things for people; I'd really like them to work in both browsers.

gardenwife it brought up the page is not available screen

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Does it still, Janet? Some ISP's don't refresh their cache as often as others. Howie can never see my site from work when I've just done updates, for instance. Would you mind trying for the next few days and let me know if the page not available persists?

NOT SURE, I HAVEN'T TRIED IT. WILL CHECK IT LATER
