LANTANA LOVE

Honor, MI(Zone 5b)

A couple of years ago I discovered a Lantana bush at my favorite nursery---it was love at first sight! I was told they are pretty much annuals here in Northern Michigan. I bought one this year and it got hit hard by a late frost. I went back to get another bush, and they were sold out except for a different variety (more of a low-growing variety) which I got and love almost as much. I cut back all the dead parts off the one that got hit and it has been recovering and slowly growing all summer, even though it is small in size. It has buds on it that are getting ready to bloom, even though it seems really late in the season. Here's my question: does anyone know if they can be protected in Northern climates over winter so they will come back in the spring--and if so, how?
I learned an interesting thing on the web about Lantana, however. In Hawaii it is very invasive and has become a real threat to the forests there....

Last fall, I brought one into the basement along with my mandevilla. I kept them in the dark, and watered them about once a month. This spring, I put them both out (after hardening off) and both survived. The lantana was slow to flower so maybe I should have cut it back more this spring than I did. I have 3-4 different colors this year and will try to save them all. 2 are trailing lantanas.

Sierrawoman and darius I think cuttings root pretty easy as for lantanas, Sierra, I hear you though, the lantanas are gorgeous.

Cuttings, as Lenjo says, work. You might want to keep taking cuttings this winter and keep 'tossing' out the older ones, as they get pretty big and 'ugly' by spring.

Ya'll ain't going to belive this...especially those who know me!! When I was back in Florida visiting about a month ago,my friend Sami, broke off some of her Lantana that she and my DH had started before we left FL. By the time the 3 day drive back to Arizona was over the Lantana looked dead as a door mouse. Anyhow, I swished the bottom of the stems around in some Root Tone and stuck them in a flower box. Been watering then right along. Well! Durned if about 4 out of 8 are putting out leaves!! Maybe I can grow LANTANA!! DH would be so proud of me. LOL Jo
