Need your opinion please.

What do YOU think would be the hardest job in the world? Physical labor that is. DH and I have been having a long discussion as to what job is the hardest to do everyday. He says that a Plumber is the worlds hardest!! LOL I agree that it isn't a easy job, but I think it is far from being the hardest!
What do you think??

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

i think a deisel mechanic has a hard job ask my hubby!!!
thats heavy stuff they work on and his hands are split from wrenching!

I thinks thats harder than pluming! :)

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

among the worst job but not the most physical would be to be the driver of the "dead truck" that comes out to the farms and gets your dead animals. PHEWWWW
Another really bad job would be to be a septic system pumper man. YUCK

But I think one of the most physical jobs which is the best and also one of the worst is being a firefighter in the mountains especially. That can be brutal and then the heat too!!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Running a Jackhammer in NYC in the summer.......Or LA

Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Washing the windows on a skyscraper on a platform that is 5' wide by 10'long....no thanks....

my cousin does this in NYC! You couldn't pay me enough.

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Giving birth!! :~)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Coalminer, working in a slaughterhouse, ditchdigger or road paver or roofer in Florida.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

I guess hardest is relative to what you have to do to survive. I think roofer in Florida, then jack hammer in NYC, but I know there are more. But you do get paid for these things.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Depends on who is doing the work. For a strong person with the right muscles and tools, most manual tasks would be easy enough, but sitting inside all day would be extremely difficult. For me, in fact, that's difficult, and I'm not really strong physically.

TC, I like how you think, and I probably agree more than I disagree, but I have to say, in a proud voice, it's probably not as difficult as someone who has never done it would think. It's just amazing how well Mother Nature arranged things in order to perpetuate the human race.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

I agree, that is where nature takes it's course. Then people start messing with it,

Thanks for all the help! Now I have a few new things to throw at him! Thing is I have been to work with him many a times and even worked with him on a daily basis(bout 10yr ago) And while he does do alot of walking and alot of climbing up and down the ladder and crawling under houses... I just think that there is some other people that work just as hard as he does. But he swears his job is THE hardest one ever!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

My last one was a Furnace operator in a steel foundry, melting steel to 3100º,on days here when you would go out at 5AM and it was already 95º,you knew it was only gonna get worse, now I'm happy to be a ditchdigger.
Coldest job I had,in Wi.,emptying and washing milktrucks in Feb.at night,for a cheese factory,-40ºbelow.

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

I've had to do some of the labor intensive jobs mentioned here, includin jackhammerin, roofin, ditchdiggin, road pavin, etc..., but when I witnessed the births of my two young-uns I knew I had never ever done anything as difficult as the miracle of birthing!!

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I only wish that excuse would work Tc. But he's talking like on a everyday hasis. Seems no job I have ever had has ever ever been as hard as what he does. I think he just likes playing head games! In other words, feel sorry for me...I had to do plumbing today! LOL He's been saying this for about 20 years now...and I have often wondered to myself if is soooo hard...why are you doing it?!!!
He's done alot of ditch digging in his time too, but now when a plumber needs a ditch dug, they use a ditchwitch!
and of course he has had to use the jackhammer to bust up concrete(when the pipes are put in the wrong place) so telling him about the "jackhammer jobs" wont work.
Thanks for all ya'll help!!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

I understand MB 'bout "on a everyday basis". As far as I'm concerned tho, a man could work his behind off 7 days a week, 365 days a year and still not match the physical aspects of what it takes to give birth! That's just my opinion! ;~)

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Can you please convince my dh of that! LOL I had 3 all natural no pain meds!!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Rootdoctor, which would you say is worse (since you have experienced both) working in extreme heat or extreme cold?

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

MB; I'm goin out on a limb here, probably all by myself too, and say....man is the weaker sex!! One often hears the comment; "oh, she's a woman, she can't do [insert typical male profession here]."

Let's just see how many of us men would give birth if the roles were reversed!! NOT ME that's fer shore!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

The heat,on the furnace,I would wear longjohns, bluejeans and welding pants, tee shirt, work shirt, and welding jacket, you had to bundle up to keep heat off you,the weldingsuits would catch on fire,I would burn up a pair of the heavy welding gloves every day,we had to throw 10 to 15 40lbs bags of coke into furnace every hour, that meant tossing them over the 10ft wall of the furnace, then there was the danger, you never knew when something was going to blow up,a broken waterline inside the furnace really gets interesting, water and molten steel do not mix!or the brick would wear out and the steel would eat through the side of the shell and spill out on the floor.
Sorry so windy, can you tell I hated it,and I hung in there 6yrs,LOL!don't say much for my intelligence!

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

My opinion, welding (I'm thinking shipyard welding) is up there in the top 5 worse jobs.
I cannot imagine a circumstance that could compel me to be inside an air-less pipe, in 90 + degree weather outside, completely covered in heavy clothes, boots and gloves, wearing that mask. And then to have to weld???????? Dangerous, nasty, miserable work.
The responsibility is awesome, because if your weld is less than perfect, people could die. The potential for injury is huge. And the pay is lousy.

I don't get it ...

farming, field work...no matterwhat the weather..rain, heat, cold, sleet, whatever..Fresh produce has to be gathered(most by hand).. when ready.. Like birthing..Nothing stops it when ready, and you only have so long to get it out of the field, loaded, iced and off to wherever...

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

I agree with the weldin labor stuff!! I was one of their helpers and know just how hard that job is! Steelworker...that's gotta be way up there on the list too rd!!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL.I was a certified railcar welder before I took the Furnace job,yes it is Gnarly!the worst is not welding.it is when you have to take Arcair and remove weld, before you put in good weld,I saw more guys hurt on this job then any other I have done,I did grain cars, they are plastic lined, you have to burn through rubber to get a good weld, good thing I only had this job for 2 months,I saw a,torn shoulder, broken fingers, missing teeth, and you had to just accept burns all over, made the furnace look good!

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Interesting thread. I joked with a work colleague (we're both in the IT field) - about how we both appreciate coming home from work and getting in the dirt and doing manual labor. :)

I do admire people who can do these intensive jobs.

Hats off to everyone above!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

sbarr; IT field huh? I was in that for my major but switched, the programming was way to "physical" for my brain!

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5b)

Welding for sure!! Especially in the summer! My ex did it for 17 years. I wouldn't wish that on anyone!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I haven't of course done any of the hard labor things above. Did have 3 kids naturally, no meds.

Right now it seems to me that one of the hardest if firefighting. The largest forest fire in the nation (I believe) is about 30 miles, as the crow flies, west of here. There is one fire camp located at our local school. Lots of men, equipment, etc. Last I heard 1200 men at this camp, there are at least 2 other camps. One of the worst problems is the summer heat, it has been from 85 degrees to 106 degrees here in the valley ever since the lightning caused fire began the end of June. Now they are saying since the fire is in such steep unaccessable area that all they can do is try to keep from spreading to nearby towns. The fire itself will probably burn until the winter snows put it out. Donna

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Donna, your right on that,Mountain forest firefighting, has to be one of the toughest!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I would think this is a very difficult job. My son was with a volunteer group, and it was only a community thing. Because of his diabetes, he wasn't able to go on runs and be assured his food would last through the demands of the call. A diabetic must eat when his system demands, or he will suffer insulin shock. So he had to quit after too many times of being a liability to his team.

In all honesty, there is no real one "hardest job". It depends on the details and who is doing the job. The macho man who said women were inferior to men because men could dig a post hole better or faster was way too cocky for me, and I chalked it up to his ignorance. I did note that his wife supports the family, and he plays at being tough by swaggering and bullying.

Bensenville, IL(Zone 5a)

MOLLYBEE, You really brought out a chuckle for me. Your question though really does depend on the job, mind jobs bring alot of stress, whereas physical labor does keep the endorphines even. I've done both and would choose physical labor over the mind job any day but my body doesn't allow me to anymore. AIMEE, They should watch monster house women are doing just as much, just as well!
