Population Watch

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Is anyone watching the population count in the top right of the page? I am not a real old timer here, but I can remember 20,000.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

I'm still a newbie, but I've been watching it too. Looks like it's gonna flip 60,000 tomorrow. Good thing everyone doesn't show up in chat all at once. LOL

I think I joined at around 25 000 in Oct. last year.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I think I was 321 or something like that, lol. Doesn't seem that long ago.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I joined Mar. 25, 2001 and I was somewhere around number 850. Cala is right about it doesn't seem like that long ago but then again it seems like forever too. I know I don't watch as much TV now when I get bored because I can come here instead.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I joined about a 3 weeks before Cala,so I've seen this site grow from nearly the beginning.

Looks like sometime this afternoon we'll hit the 60,000 milestone.Congrats to Dave and Trish. This site is so important to so many people.Thank you for keeping it going.

Sweetwater, TX(Zone 7a)

This is a wonderful site. I'm with Melody, thanks, Dave and Trish! I wonder how many of those 59,000 pay the yearly membership.

Welcome to DG ANewYorker!

We've been counting down to 60K in this thread: http://davesgarden.com/t/389974/ It's getting close - 59,974 as I type this.

gardenwife, Thanks for the welcome! I'll be watching the countdown!

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

this isn't 60,000 people at dave's garden tho...

I know I've gotten at least 50 people interested in GardenWatchdog because I think its one of the smartest things out there...

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, I thought that was DG alone - anyone who's registered with a member name. So, someone can be registered just at Gardenwatchdog.com and not DG and it still shows up in the DG population? Does that number then include PDB a combined membership of DG, Gardenwatchdog, and PDB?

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

dunno all the inner workings.
I do know when I first went to sign in here, I was suprised to have already been signed up!!!
I tried a password I used and sure enough, I was already a registered user of Dave's Garden.

once I saw the connection with GardenWatchdog I understood.

I would imagine there are only 800 - 1,500 paying users of Daves Garden. Course I really have no idea... just guessing by the volume of posts here

60,060!! I just missed the 60,000 milestone. Dave has something somewhere that shows how the population will increase over time, I remember reading it and being amazed at how accurately he could predict how the volume would increase in the future.
I first signed up just to be able to read a post about a plant I was searching for, if I had known I was going to fall in love with all of you, I would have taken a little more time to come up with a better screen name!!

I joined because I kept finding the best info on plants I was researching in the PDB. When I realized it was a "subscriber supported" type thing, I thought "That's something I want to support". So I subscribed, found the Watchdog (worth the price of admission even tho it is free) then the forums.

I never thought I'd participate much in the forums ... LOL. I was wrong. (hate it when that happens) The knowledge and generosity found there has not only saved me WAY more than $15, but I've gotten plants I would not have been able to obtain, otherwise. And I've only been here almost 2 months!

For all you get here, DG is the best bargain on the web.

Here Here!!I agree, best site a little money can buy!the folks here are the greatest!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Dave has posted at least once the number of paying subscribers. I think a lot of people thought he was rolling in the bucks until they read that.

What hasn't been posted, and would probably be difficult for him to calculate in a pure sense, is the actual net income produced by those subscriptions. Just the physical setup wouldn't be an indicator, since it is overlapped, as I understand it, with the required equipment he uses for his livlihood. He could probably never keep track of the total time he works on the site. When he made the decision to go to a subscriber basis, he promised there would be many benefits resulting from the member dollars, and it began to happen overnight. The site became faster, there were many new features and much more for subscribers and non-subscribers alike.

As with any site, there have been a few glitches, and once in a while we were frustrated by a slowing down and even a major crash. Our concerns have always been addressed, our questions answered promptly when properly presented. We are possibly the best informed group of members on the web as far as the behind the scenes workings are concerned.

Personally, I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how Dave, Trish and Terry are right on top of things. Often, someone will mention offhandedly a point of interest like number of subscribers, and it seems like someone in admin has a beeper going off. Soon, a response appears and the inside info is right there. Given the many posts we can see, and the many we probably don't have time to read or don't even know are there (I don't watch all of the forums because I don't have time despite my lack of employment), it's inconceivable that each post is read by them, but it seems to be so.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Can you imagine 60,000 people on here all posting at once?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Or even all reading at once!

I was going to say it JUST like Aimee did!! She always has a way of taking the words right out of my mouth! (I wish!)LOL Jo

Just like the boom boom bunny, it keeps growing and growing and growing and ....

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

RR, you must be beaming to me by ESP and then watching to see how long it takes me to "get it". I keep wondering where these thoughts come from, and I think I just found out.

Crossville, TN

That's just the way it is Aimee.....LOL Jo

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Aimee and Jo,
I helped too. Telepathy works!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Carena, I'm with you as far as the user name goes. I didn't realize how much we would use our names, I just quickly decided to use my Mother's name. Wish I spent a little more time. So many of the members have madeup-decided on very unusual names. Donna

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I love the creativity some members exhibit in names. I think GW had a thread about how people chose their names, but I didn't choose mine. Mama did it many years ago.

Sweetwater, TX(Zone 7a)

And it's a nice one, Aimee!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, thank you, ANY'er! Actually it's a little different, but I couldn't get the information to take when I joined, so I went with the English spelling. I spell it, and I will try to do it here, Aimée. It means "beloved", or "to be loved" in French, and in Louisiana it is pronounced like Ah-may. I like to tell people to remember "Ah may, or Ah may not, but it doesn't usually work. Mama had no idea about the meaning of names, but she named me Aimée Grace.
