ranting on bad swap

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i did a swap a few months ago. well i told the girl i had never done this morning glory before. its a noah something i was supposed to be trading for.well i planted it when i got it babied it watched the new bud come up the other day and was waiting for a redish orange bloom. wll i got purple. i contacted the girl she swears they were orange. i planted all five and they are the same plant no differences so i am believing all purple. i traded a hard to find seeds for these and got burned. i will never trade with her agian.

am i the only one who has ever gotten burned?

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

No I'm sure positive that you are not alone here.
Sorry to hear about your bad trade, but maybe your next trade will make up for it.

imzadi - I've had this happen with commercial seed packs! It's possible that her orange glory was grown near a purple and the two cross pollinated.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Morning glories will cross pollinate like crazy, that's why we have so many kinds.

If people aren't aware about proper isolation for plants, they can be innocently sending out seeds they believe to be one thing and the next generation (F1 Hybrid) will look different from the parent.

Most people trade flowers for fun and don't take the time to educate themselves in a little botany.A casual flower grower may not realize what has even happened.

I have been burned but its always when the person doesn't send their stuff and then drops off the face of the earth. Its always happened on that other site, never this one. I think I have had it with that other site.

I rarely trade these days, not because of being burned, but it takes me forever to get to the post office because I am busy. However, there are times I do send out things to folks. I am always amazed at the lack of "thank you's". Not looking for anything fancy but a simple "yes, I recieved the plants in good/bad condition" would be nice. I recently sent out many boxes of stuff, I only got back acknowledgements that the packages came in from 2 folks! That was 2 out of 7 boxes. I am off my soapbox now.

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

i am tired of trading for sase. seems i do not get my postage. i only send sase out of the goodness of my heart and to help out fellow dgers, when i can sell them at farmers market and make a profit. instead i am out the profit and have to pay to ship. doesn't seem fair.

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

farmgirl21, I found out that you really have to get that postage first, unless it is someone you trade with and know. Many times they do not even bother to send the postage if it is requireed upfront, that way you are not out the plants and the postage. It is so wonderful to receive a GIFT of plants from someone, friend or stranger, at davesgarden; the gift-giver should not also be expected to pay the cost of sending that present! And I do appreciate a thank-you note myself.

Lindale, TX(Zone 8a)

imzadi: Don't be so tough on this person! I have had this happen with commercial seed on several occasions. The flower would be a completely different color than what the package says. PoppySue and Melody are right. Morning glories will cross-pollinate easily.

This sort of thing does happen, even from the most sincere of traders. It can be disappointing though! But, really being 'burned'? Hopefully your trader sent them out in all good faith. Remember, never send seeds you cannot afford to lose, there are no guarantees. Sometimes you may not even get anything in return, and will find out much later that life got in the way of our fun.

okay thanks for all the wonderful words about this but my thing is this is a varity i am well known with as i have it. i tried to ask the lady if i could send these back and she send me the right ones. i was even willing to pay the postage. she refused and said she sent orange ones. i tried contacting her agian today after reading alot of what was said here today. well she refused my email. so from now on i wont trade with her. i am still upset over this but will deal with it.

i have never had any of my morning glories cross with another. maybe it might be something worth trying. thanks all Imzadi

I traded for those Orange Noah morning glory and mine turned out orange/yellow.

Well, I hope if I ever make a novice mistake that my trader would tell me. I'd hate see one or two bad trades get publicized to a point that people shy away from trading with newbies. For me gardening is about learning...learning about all the wonders of God's creation and watching it develop. I started out with this interest because my grandmother was willing to teach me and let me make mistakes to learn from them. One of the things that keeps me coming back to DG is that I have so many wonderful, kind and patient techers here. Just remember that for every "sour" trade there are hundreds of other very rewarding ones.

Brenda - so very true. Probably the best trades are those done with good intentions, a bit of patience and a sense of humor. I've encountered the best and worst in my past year of trading - so many wonderful and generous people, the occasional trader from he** - but, we learn from those experiences and pass along a lot of thank yous and a few warnings to save other people some grief.

Imzadi - I've been pretty careful to label the seeds I'm collecting this year, but there's always the possibility of sending something different. Ideally, if a mistake is made, the person will try to send a correction, but if not, enjoy the flowers you do have and try again when opportunities present themselves. My morning glory luck this year has been iffy - most of mine are not blooming - only a few.

Good luck!!

Imzadi, you will enjoy trading much more if you do not let a bad trade get you down, you will have about 99% great ones, from the unbelievably generous people here at davesgarden. I have made HUNDREDS of trades, seeds, and plants, and there was only ONE that went bad (where someone scammed getting free plants from many people with no intention of sending out anything). All in all, even then I was only out plants that were able to be divided and shared, and a few dollars postage. Most of my trades, especially Hostas, reward me with a couple hundred dollars (retail value) of plants for the price of postage (which nowadays won't even buy a pack of seeds!), and some hostas someone else wanted that I had to share.

Your trader is probably embarrassed at sending something mislabelled, and does not have any more 'guaranteed correct ID) seeds to send.

If you were to post something more like "seeds for 'Orange Noah' turned out to be purple, can anyone share correct seeds for trade or postage" you would no doubt have some replies from people happy to help.

Best wishes,

John

If Orange Noah was already a hybrid variety, then it will not grow true from saved seeds no matter what the isolation distance is.

Something that many people aren't aware of ,is that not every seed will produce a plant exactly like it's parent.

I see this every day when dealing with vegetable seed trades, but ornamentals have exactly the same situation. You cannot grow plants from the offspring of a hybrid that are identical to the parent.

The first generation ...which is the hybrid plant that you like and are growing, is called the F1 generation. The second season ,it will be called F2,and you get a combination of the parents used to produce the first plant.

Hope this helps sort out a little confusion. Most times mistakes like this are done out of ignorance...it doesn't make the person on the recieving end feel any better, and the sender of the seed is confused and upset because they have no idea as to what has happened. It's heartbreaking when you have traded something rare for something that you can't use,but 95% of your trades will turn out wonderful, and that is what I tend to look at.

When I am trading vegetables, before I ever discuss addresses or SASE's,I quiz the sender about how the plant has been grown and if they are aware about cross pollination and hybrid seeds. If I am convinced that the sender has enough information and know-how,I then set up a trade or SASE.It saves heartbreak when I've sent rare heirlooms out and got back seeds useless to me.
