Groundcover

baton rouge, LA(Zone 9a)

Hello! I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and would like to plant a ground cover that can be walked on. Is there one that will fit the bill? I think I read about one and now I can't find the article and I think maybe I dreamed it!!!! Can anyone help me out?

Is this sun or shade? What zone are you in there? I'm thinking 8 or 9. I can think of some things that should grow there, like ivy, dwarf mondo grass, sunshine mimosa, perennial peanut, but I don't know that any of these will take foot traffic.

Baton Rouge would be zone 8, right? 8b maybe? The only ground cover I've heard of that can take foot traffic is Mother of Thyme. But I haven't had any luck growing it. I haven't given up ...

I have a lot of groundcovers that take some amount of foot-traffic. I am not sure if it might be too hot where you live, but check into:

mazus reptans (my favorite) -- lots of foot traffic
ajuga -- lots of foot traffic
pachysandra -- medium foot traffic
English ivy -- lots of foot traffic, but beware of tripping on vines
crown vetch -- lots of foot traffic
lots of thyme varieties, especially prostrate ones -- lots of foot traffic
phlox subulata -- medium foot traffic
ice plant (Delosperma) -- medium foot traffic
Creeping speedwell -- lots of foot traffic

This list is a good starting-off point -- good luck! Much better than having to mow a grass lawn! Here is a photo of part of my Thyme Lawn.

lupinelover, I bet that lawn smells great when you walk on it (and freshly cut, too!)
