Ursaline x Austrailie

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

This is from LBJ seeds that I started last year. It's been a long wait for a bloom! It started out white but has changed to a pale peach.

Very pretty flower!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Monika. I was disappointed at first when it opened up white. I'm tickled that the color changed.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

poppy, it's very pretty!!! now I wish I'd overwintered mine :(

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

It's pretty Poppy.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I let a lot of these ones go with the winter. I saved this one just cuz I like the foliage and it had such a huge trunk on it. It had barely made a Y when frost came. I did send out a lot of cuttings from the seedlings so maybe there will be some more colored ones that show up....

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm so glad you posted this. I was just checking on the cutting you'd sent me of this last fall. It sure is a beauty. I also love the foliage on this one. Thanks again for sending it.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Kristi... I think your cutting is from the same cross but it's not this plant. This one never branched. Just a straight trunk with big leaves. I wintered it whole - lol.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Very pretty Sue. Yours hows more color than the seedlings I had of that cross.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Very pretty bloom. Glad you kept it.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Poppysue, i really like it, the color and shape.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Lovely! I was wondering why we hadn't seen any pictures of this one yet. I certainly was worth the wait, glad you kept it.

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

Beautiful!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Geez... I'm so happy to see ya'll like her. It makes me feel a little better about all my flowerless brugs. I went out and pollinated with Whiskers. The second bloom opened tonite. Any suggestions on pollen for the second one? I have several types in the fridge. Jean Pasco, Tequila Sunrise, Versi Peach, CG, .... I've got some pollen from different pinks too, but I thought the yellow-peach range might work out better.

Rock Hill, SC(Zone 8a)

Poppysue, beautiful flower. I'm new, when you say you wintered it whole, how did you do that? I have new plants and will probally need to do something to keep them for next year.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Poorgeorge, I meant that I didn't cut the trunk of the plant at all. Some of my seedlings made lots of branches and side shoots that I cut off before I brought them in. This one didn't have any to cut.

Rock Hill, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks, the 3rd picture (8:48AM) the trunk looked like leaves had been cut off. When you bring them in are they in the house, under the house or where and do they need much light over winter? Sorry for all the dumb questions, but trying to do it right.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I've kept the leaves pinched off up to the Y. I want to keep the shape more like a tree... rather than a bush. I wintered most of my plants dormant, in the dark basement. I started to worry this one was going to die back below the Y so I brought it upstair under my lights. It started perking up and looking better after a few weeks.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

PG, did you start with cuttings? Or did you plant seeds?

Rock Hill, SC(Zone 8a)

I have 3 cuttings about 2' tall, potted last week. Just got seeds that I started yesterday.

Rock Hill, SC(Zone 8a)

poppysue, I got my plants from country garden.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

You won't want to cut your seedlings until after the main stem forms a Y. The blooms will come on the growth above the Y. Branches and side shoots can be cut off but leave the main stem alone.

On cuttings it depends what part of the plant they came from. If they are from the top parts of the plants you may get blooms very early.

Rock Hill, SC(Zone 8a)

I don't know if this will help, but look at this picture.

Those are your cuttings? They look good to me. I'd leave them alone and see what they do. I've found some cuttings tend to branch out all over the place. Some seem to grow fairly straight. Keep your eyes peeled for the Y cuz then you'll start to getting blooms. It seemed like forever for some of my plants to Y last year but most of them did before winter came.

Rock Hill, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks, you have been must helpful. Sure hope I can get just one of mine to look as good yours.

FSH, TX

This one is already one of my favorites for the new year. I like the color and the form. Very good work Poppy! I sure hope you have some other peach pollen to put on this puppy.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Brugman, I pollinated the 2nd bloom with your Dr.D. Hope it takes!

FSH, TX

Poppysue,
I'm hoping that (Ursaline x Austrailie) x Dr.D brings out some more of the peach color for both hybrids as well as a bit more of the suaveolens influence as well. I don't know if this is what your going after, but Dr.D definitely has some suaveolens genes even though it may appear to be pure versicolor. Dr.D is highly fertile so I don't imagine you will be having too much trouble with this one. I just like a wider flaring flower myself, but to be honest the long tendrils aurea hybrids impart are definitly nice as well. Georgia Peach would be another nice hybrid to cross with this one.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

So poppysue, do you have a Georgia Peach? That is one I would pick also!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Nope. That's one I don't have - lol. I'm using pollen I saved from last year. I've got a pretty good selection to choose from but not that one.

Hamilton, Canada

Sue you did good when you culled! love the tendrils on this one. Hope someone sends you Georgia Peach pollen. Good luck with your crosses.
