Torch oil in garden

Bensenville, IL(Zone 5a)

We had a storm yesterday and I have torches with citronella oil in the garden the storm blew down one of the torches full with oil and emptied into the garden I'm worried what this will do to the flowers can anyone tell me if there's anything I can do? Denise you can e-mail me at tomden2000@hotmail.com Thanks!

I imagine where it splash onto the flowers you'll see some possible leaf damage (suffocation?). If it spilled and went directly into the ground I think it will only affect the plant in the immediate area of the spill. If you're concerned about it contaminating the soil (food garden) you can shovel up where it spilled and remove it. Those torch cans only hold about two cups when full so it couldn't do too much damage.

Why not let us know what you witness from this, so we will all know the answer from someone (you!) who will now have experience along this line, eh? And ya know what, tomden?

Welcome to Dave's Garden, Tom :)

Last year something similar happened to me; citronella torch oil got spilled all over a part of one of my shady perennial gardens. Part of a vinca that got really soaked with it died to the ground, but plants that got only a drop or two, after being hosed off, were fine. And the roots survived, new stems were put up almost immediately. Didn't do a thing to deter a hawthorn sucker (didn't even hose it off). *sigh

So far I've had some wilting going on and some of the water drained toward my tomato plants and one seems to be fighting for its life because it's at the end of garden and not quite leveled off yet. Thanks for all your help!
