the novice gardener

I have a question that might be simple to some but being a novice gardener needs answering. Acid loving plants are they those with p.h. soil requiements that are high?
To just throw out an idea! Maybe a forum for the novice. there isn' one is there

As a novice, I use each and every forum with all my questions. So don't hold back because there are plenty of generous and well educated gardeners out there. I have posted in the wrong forum any number of times and the question still gets answered, and then some.

I get soooo confused about soil ph. But acid soil is lower ph than alkaline.

I looked it up ... again. The next time I need to know, I'll have to look it up again. LOL

Anastasia is right, ask your questions, they will get answered. If you don't get an answer in one forum, try another. There is someone here with the answer. All of my stupid questions get answered.

You can check the FAQ forum, first, if you want to avoid asking the same questions that have been answered before.

Hi there
pH7 is neutral, any higher number is going towards alkaline and any lower is acidic
Here's a link that gives more detail :)

Oops, forgot the link - thanks george http://www.esf.edu/pubprog/brochure/soilph/soilph.htm

roof...I'm a novice too...lots of us here at Dave's! Like everyone else said...just ask away and you're sure to get a reply. I use the search Dave's box a lot. I've found tons of info I was looking for in the older posts. And when they don't quite tell me as much as I'm looking for I ask on that thread...it brings it back to a current thread and many more replys are added. The wonderful things about Dave's members is they don't judge your question as stupid or dumb...but as a person who wants to learn more and they are happy to help you!!!

Looking forward to reading more of your post. WaWild1

Wish i would have found this site sooner. I just happened to find it because i was looking for a site that would give me info on the care of plants.
Again thanks so much!!

Roof, Sundry, all other new gardeners: there are no stupid questions, only questions that don't get asked!

We were all beginning gardeners once; the only way to become a gardener is to become a gardener :) Learn by doing, kind of like riding a bike.

I spent years reading books about how to grow plants; my own experiences showed me that many of the books were incorrect, at least for my garden. I would have loved to be able to talk with people who actually garden! Would have saved me tons of money (dead plants) and aggravation. So ask away!

I have been gardening in one or another form for about 54 years, and that question still gets me. I know it, I passed the tests in college when that was a part of it, I can remember it until I consciously think about it. But it just won't go into my permanent data base and stay there. The science of it must be skewed, or it would be easier to retain.

Anyway, you will probably always need to amend your soil, no matter what you buy or what you are planting. Invariably, I end up buying something that needs whatever is the opposite of the soil I have available. I just talk to my plants and apologize to them for not having a menu they like and promise to reform if they will be patient.

lupinelover you are so right about the books. I'm a avid reader and have lots of gardening books...they are a good reference, but most of my success has come from advice from other gardeners here at Dave's and my community. I'm having my first good year with tomatoes thanks to info I was given here.
