Roots!

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

It is rooted by a mathod I still like to call air layering. Ain`t those just nice looking? No, just kidding ... I picked it up on a coral reef and it is from an underwater Brugmansia that only grow in Fantasia *lol*

Tonny, you are such a kidder! Is this from your new method of rooting that you were telling me about?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Ok what is it really?

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Yes :) Its x candida double white (nameless garden center Brug here). It rooted so fast. It worked amazingly for Quinde and Oro Verde as well. Susie, when you are settled in TX I want to ask if you could test the method on some real hard to root Brugs to double check and compare the results. Could that not be fun? :D

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Lol.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Tonny, you know I'm always up for an experiment! If I weren't moving in a little bit, I'd be testing it now!

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

I know, Susie. Is packing going okay? Gee, that must be the largest truck ever entering TX from TN :D

btw. I have sown the seeds for the virus experiment. Can`t wait to those pop up. I need Tracy to tell me, how to feed them, so they wil bloom faster. Gosh, I fear for what we will become to know :(

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Those are such great thick roots, so are you going to tell us your secret method?? I have a bunch of brugs I need to root fast as soon as I get home Tonny.................. PLEASE tell all! LOL

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Kell, its not secret *lol* I just don`t know, if the results was pure coincidence. That is why it has to be repeated several times, before its to say for sure :) Will you have patience with me :D

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I will try it Tonny and see if it works for me! LOL

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I found a way that works for me quickly and I found it quite by accident. I have a 9foot plant of Charles Grimaldi growing in a 15 gal pot. I have it staked and use foam rubber sleeves that you would use to protect your water pipes from freezing in the winter to keep the plant from rubbing against the stake and damaging the bark. The foam is placed around the stake not the plant.Somehow a small piece of the foam got onto a branch of the plant and it could not have been there for more than 3-4 days at most. When I tried to remove it the plant had rooted itself into the foam.I guess moisture from the irrigation had helped it along also.
Maybe this would work on some of those hard to root brugs. The foam is very inexpensive and can be purchased from any Lowes or Home Depot.

Just A thought. (:D

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That interesting Catsmeow. Was it easy to separate the roots from the foam without hurting them?

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

OK here it goes, it is 2/3 Scott's/Miracle Grow Excell 21-5-20 and 1/3 Scott's/Miracle Grow Cal-mag 15-15-15, they are getting hit every other day, with fertilizer or at least every third day. I also gave them just a little epsom salt (Mag. sulfate). At first I thought it was just the cross, but then another cross has bloomed and a couple more are ready to.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Thank you Tracey, will try it. I sure need something to bloom!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Kell,
The roots did not actually penetrate the foam but started to curl inside of it. I haven't tried to root any this way. It just happened that a piece of the foam got onto the plant somehow and it rooted. I may try this method later on though and see how well it works. This seems to be similar to airlayering without actually cutting the plant which you don't have to do with brugs anyway.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Gloria, I think everyone is rushing out to try it but I am not sure it is so easy to buy Tracy's Miracle Grow. The kind I can get is 15-30-15. I think there is an acid one also and maybe one for blooming one. I will have to check it out. Has anyone seen it at HD or Lowes? Where did you get your 2 kinds Tracey?

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

From the greenhouse. This is what we used through the injectors. You might see if one of your local greenhouses will sell you some, or order it for you.

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Catsmeow, is it polystyrene foam like those that you buy in spray?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Tonny: I use drier sheets, roots grow right through, they also stay wet.

Kell: I have 20-20-20 and 15-30-15, plus aluminum sulfate and epsom salts, should do the trick, sure will try it!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Tony,
It's just foam rubber, not from a spray can and it comes in about 5foot lengths and you cut it to fit around your water pipes. I looked today to see if the little roots that it helped produce were still there and they are. It's been about 2 weeks ago that I found them and they have not dried up at all.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just saw your post Catsmeow, I was posting at the same time. I will try that soon. I guess you just have to make sure the rubber is saturated with water all the time. I have gardening velcro that I can use to hold it on the trunk. I would imagine HD or Lowes would carry the rubber foam. Maybe I should look in NJ for they may not sell it in Ca as it does not freeze there. I love trying new things esp if they work! LOL

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Kell,
I didn't keep it wet. The only water it got was about twice a week from the sprinkler. Remember I didn't even realize it was on the branch and have no idea how it got on there. I have a plant of rosamond and a few others that I plan on trying this method of rooting on. (:D)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh a Rosamond??? W ehave an ongoing debate here between Pink Beauty and Rosamond. Which is which, and do we have one or the other or th elucky ones both! Where did you get yours and are you sure it is a Rosamond??

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Where are you catsmeow?

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Kell,
I have pink beauty and rosamond. Pink beauty came from Logee's and Rosamond came from Susie. MY rosamond has bloomed and looks exactly like the one Susie has posted on her website. Pink beauty has not bloomed for me yet and doesn't even have buds at this point. It was quite a small plant when I got it but it is growing pretty fast.
I've compard pics from Dave's,BGI and ABADS with the actual flower from my rosamond and it appears to be the real deal. Long tendrils and very deep saturated coloring.
I can't imagine that it will be that much longer before my pink beauty blooms. It's at that stage now that it should start to Y soon. Will certainly be doing some comparisons between the two though. If the PB blooms to look like the picture that Logee's has then I know my two are different. My rosamond looks nothing like the picture of PB in the Logee's catalog. Two totally different shades of pink.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

but the shades of pink will even vary depending on the time of year and the temperature anmong other environmental differences. So you can't really judge by that. Is the form the same Catsmeow?

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Kell,
I haven't seen pink beauty bloom yet but I forgot to mention that the leaves on the two (rosamond and pink beauty) are different. The two plants that I have just don't even look the same.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Good! You can join in our continual discusson! LOL. We all will love to see your blooms esp side by side!

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Glad to have you here on Dave's Catsmeow. I hope your Pink Beauty Y's for you soon. I did not even realize that PB and Rosamond look like two different plants even without blooms. That should make it easier to identify them.

The leaf on the left is a not so good looking rosamond leaf and the one on the right a pink beauty leaf. To me they are noticeably different.

wow I did it I actually posted a picture! You all have to unsderstand that I am completely computer retarded and still don't know how I did that!(LOL)

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Thought while I was trying to take a picture that i'd get one of my 9ft Charles Grimaldi. If you look closely you can see a few of my other brugs in the lower background.

you did great! It took me forever to learn how to post pictures. My poor DH had to really work hard on teaching me that trick!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

This is a pic of some 4 month old brug seedlings. Been pushing them hard in order to get some blooms beofre fall. Hopefully!

This is 2 more crosses planted at the same time and they are getting pushed equaly as hard for blooms.
The first pot is Jean Pasko x Pink Beauty (J.T. Sessions)
the second one is Cotton Candy x Butterfly (Bonnie Vaughan)
The first pot that you see in this pic is the cross in the above posting.
Well now that I know how to post pictures, you'll all be seeing more as all of my brugs begin to bloom.

Great pictures. All I can say is wow! I have those last two crosses and mine are not nearly that big. I have to wonder again if it is not those big pots that help. I would say you are doing great with your baby brugs. Isn't it fun to be able to post pictures and Dave has made it quite easy for us.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

look close and you might see a caterpilar or two. You can certainly see the damage they are doing.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Great pictures. Will be fun seeing all the seedling bloom pictures.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yow are too good at those baby brugs Cat. Mine were growing much slower! I will have to really pick up on my feeding. Try Bt Catsmeow to stop those cats. You only use a little so it lasts a long time. And it is envirnmentally safe.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Catsmeow, many congrats. i am impressed, you started in february and have a 9 foot charles, and rosamond and pink beauty! thanks for the post of the leaves too.
