I got a quick question for one of ya'll. Seems like for at least 2 weeks now everytime I get on the Photo thread I see at least 1 if not 2 pic with just a red X on them. All the others look fine and normal, and its not always the same one.
Is it my computer??
I even had a memeber e/mail me asking me why one of my pics had only a red X on it and that they couldn't see the real pic. But when I went to look at it...it was there plain as day for me.
Is my computer doing the same funny thing as that other members?? Just picking certain pictures and not letting me see them or what??
Thanks in advance!

Molly, it sounds like it might be on your end, but if you can tell me which images you see a rec "x" instead of the image, I'll try to help you figure it out ;o)

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Same happening here and I'm on AOL also Molly wondering if if could be that. On mine it not the same picture everytime. Stange. I tried to do what Dave posted earlier about this but don't have the options on Norton to change.

Glad you said that Ruth, I couldn't find any option on Norton to change either! Funny about those x's, one day they're there, the next day they're elsewhere. I'm also on AOL, tho...

Just went and looked, and there are 4 on the first page of photo's
Here's the 1st: http://davesgarden.com/t/387665/
2nd one: http://davesgarden.com/t/387675/
3rd one: http://davesgarden.com/t/387674/
4th one: http://davesgarden.com/t/387673/

I wonder if it is AOL, seems the folks having problems are all AOL users. Strange though, it hasn't always been this way. Just here lately is all. Its like Vi said, its usually in a different place every other time I go there.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Wierd, the same ones for me!

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Well I could see allbthose Molly but the next time I try I may not can see them.

Molly amd Vi have ya'll been testing the peach brandy again?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Ohhhhh that sounds good to me!

I can see the ones Molly posted, but my problem is that if I look at anyone's Member page and they have a photo posted on their member page I can see the thumbnail, but if I click on it to it enlarged I get the red X. Every time....anyone's member pic enlarged. I've just been settling for not seeing anything close up. :(

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Same here too, langbr! Are you on AOL?

It's all in the referers. If you see a red X instead of the picture, try hitting the reload/refresh button on your browser and see if they come up then.

Dave--I run a website so I know what you're saying, but I can see all the PDB pics and any pics in posts....it's just the member page that I can't see enlarged. Is it the subdirectory that the member page is in that's the problem with the referrer?

Vi- I have comcast not AOL. sorry.

all pictures on all the sites are pulled from the same subdirectory (in fact, the subdirectory is outside the document root.)

The picture is then pulled up by a script (script name is usually /pics/ or /memberpic/) which brings the entire picture into a variable, sends you a mime-type, and then dumps the image to your browser.

Before sending the picture, however, the script examines your HTTP_REFERER to ensure that you are looking at the picture from the site in which the picture resides. If the referer doesn't match (in other words, if the referer shows that some clown is embedding the picture from another website) then it gives nothing or an authorized denied message.

The red X probably happens because your browser forgets to send the referer from time to time (I've seen this in buggy browsers). There isn't a good solution except to make sure to have a browser that follows good HTTP standards. There is no reason not to have working referers, as they do not hurt your privacy concerns as open cookies do.

Dave-do you consider Netscape 7.01 to be buggy?? If IE is more reliable I can use it too.

langbr: You're using the same browser as I am (basically). Stick with Netscape 7 (or higher) as it is a very fine browser.

Are you using a firewall product like Norton?

Hi Dave,

Perhaps this will help. I get this message when trying to view an image that won't load:

Parse error: parse error in /www/garden/pics/Moda127.jpg on line 131

-or-

Parse error: parse error in /www/garden/pics/flowox.jpg on line 79

It looks to me like Netscape is trying to execute the .jpg as an html page???

Thanx!

Hey - those error messages help tremendously!! Thank you. I'll get this fixed.

dave

langbr: I fixed the specific problem that your error message showed. If you find any other problems (non referer related) please let me know!

I just went back thru page 7 in the PDB and could see every picture. Didn't see red X at all hope it stays that way.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I still see a couple of them, but not on the first page. But I did try and click on one of the red X's just to see what would happen, and it actually opened the pic for me. So at least I can click to enlarge the pic and see it that way.

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Duh, bragged too quick still have them.

(Zone 5a)

I only get the red x on some of the PDB photos and some black outs in the PDB news letter that is sent to us.
