Bad Weather - Tropical Storm 'Bill'

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

It has been raining here all week. The ground is already saturated and soggy. All the plants I have been receiving have been placed in pots, since the ground is too wet to dig holes. And now we are expecting Tropical Storm (possibly Hurricane) 'Bill' here later today. Which means we will have to drag a bazillion potted plants/trees inside in the morning. Sheesh! Are we ever going to get a break?

How about my gardening neighbors here in Louisiana? Is your area going to be affected? What are you doing to prepare? -- Jean

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

If it hit here will not be here will took off away from here to go other safe place cuz not safe to stay our trailer.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi Jean, Hi Rose, just what we need, more rain..sigh. I am so digusted. Looks like it will make landfall between Morgan City and Terrebonne ..that puts Jean and I on the very wet side of the storm.
Jean, the only thing I've done to prepare is get more dry bedding in for my goats. It is a mess out here. I hope the weather man is right and the storm comes in and leaves quick.

Batten down the hatches yall..here we go again! I hope this is not a sign of what this Hurricane season will bring, last years season is still very fresh in my mind.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

Hi Lisa, Rose, Jean,

Like ya'll, The ground is already saturated. I've got water sitting on the ground since yesterday, all my new stuff is in pots. Some of my plant stands got knocked over last night. This is sooo very uncool. Last season I dealt with three storms in a month, but that was at the end of the season. It's too early for this mess!!

My aunt has been visiting from Ohio. She's supposed to fly out of New Orleans at 11:30. I don't know whether to hope her flight makes it out, or gets cancelled. Meanwhile, my parents are driving her to New Orleans. ARG!

I keep losing my internet connection, so here's hoping everyone makes it through this little storm ok, and that this isn't how the rest of the season is going to go.

You guys all brace yourselves and take care and cover. Will have you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Good luck, this one should not be too bad wind wise but the rain, oy the rain. Supposed to have lots of hurricanes this season.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

uhmmm...can someone send an ark? It has been pouring bucket fulls for the last couple of hours....we are never going to dry out..there goes the garden, one more time..sigh. WAHH I WANNA MOVE!

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

The Florida Panhandle is calling to you Lisa!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

oh Lisa, I'm so sorry!!! I hope this ends quickly for y'all

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

weeds, the Fla. panhandle has been calling me longer than you think! One day..one day...

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

So sorry to hear about the bad weather you are getting. It just stopped raining here about a week or 10 days ago. I thought I was going to go nuts! I hope this storm passes quickly and you all get a break. My neighbor always tells me to be careful what I wish for - last year we had a long cold wet spring. It never stopped raining right through May. Then in June it stopped raining, temps shot up in the 90's, and it didn't rain again all summer! So I guess I will just wish you successful gardening and leave it at that!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

HI Friends in Louisiana.. I feel so bad for yall! RIght now It is sunny and light wind over here.. I just thought about you all and my family that are having lots of rain. HOpe everything will be ok for you all. We have enough of rain! This early am, it did rained for less 5 mintues. It's kinda hot and humidity right now.. I have been watching the weather on TV about this storm!

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

looks like I'm on the western edge of the Bill situation. :)

Poor Lisa must be right in the middle of it, and Jean is on the wet side of the storm. =(

Not that it's dry here ... I've got 2 inches of water sitting in the yard and it's still raining, no end in sight. But I'm glad I'm not having to deal with what Lisa and Jean are.

rain, rain, go away. Come again another day.

Batchelor, LA(Zone 8b)

We missed it on this end of the bayou. Just a little rain
and a few puffs of wind.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

It came in right over us, loads of rain and flooding. Mississippi look out it is packing lots of rain.

Jean, yall must have gotten loads of rain too. Hope you are ok. We sure didn't need all this rain.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

Lisa & Jean,
I know this must be awful for ya'll. How bad is the damage? It's amazing what a little storm can do. It seems like the less organized ones carry the most water, and I don't know if wind is always worse than water.
I wonder if Jean evacuated?

Bud, I'm glad ya'll missed it. I'm thankful that we didn't get much.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We're getting hit by rain tonight, thanks to Bill - so far it's been a pretty steady drizzle since early afternoon. Weather reports said it was coming down in buckets north of here, near the KY state line (poor Melody!) Funny how a (disorganized) storm wayyyyyy down south affects our weather this far inland.

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

We're okay here. It appears as if most of the heavy rain has abated. We will probably still get some little feeder bands passing through, but I think the bad portion is about over.

Downpours of rain were heavy and squally and the streets flooded, but the Parish had all the heavy-duty pumps running so no water came even close to getting in the house, thank goodness! We lost electricity only once, very briefly.

Periodically, the winds would become extremely gusty, especially since the storm's center passed quite close by us, but it's fairly calm now. It WAS nice watching my banana trees thrashing around in the rain and wind -- looked to tropical!

Yeah, Lisa, the other states are going to get a drenching now. Hope they NEED the rain (we didn't). I'm just glad everyone appears to be okay.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

Glad to hear you are ok, no real damage. :)

I'll bet those banana trees looked awesome!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

So glad y'all are safe! Gardens can be re-planted; gardeners cannot!

Please send Bill up here!

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

I hope Bill does go somewhere that someone wants him! lol

has anyone heard from Zuluqueen today? She's in the NO area, isn't she?

Cheri'

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Hi Lisa and Mini, over here are fine just lot of rain and all the plants look so happy and so green so hope not get more rain tonight boy could not cut the grass too much wet.

Hope others are ok with that weather.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Lupinelover, if you want Bill you can have him but don't send him over to Reynoldsburg. I would rather do a little watering myself then be underwater like I have been the last two months. I just got my tomatoes and dahlias planted last week. So, Bill, if you are listening, don't come here!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Glad to hear everything is okay although a bit swampy. They say the rain may come our way, hope not it seems it has been raining here for months with the exception of this past ONE week of sunshine!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

i just saw about the storm and came here-glad to see you are all somewhat ok!!! lisa michigan never gets flooded! ;)
i sure hope you didnt lose stuff like last yr when this happened.
praying for all of you in the south!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Lisa I thought of you as I watched the news on the TV. Hope everything looks in better shape this morning for all you folk and I do believe we might even get a taste of Bill here too. I welcome him!!! Even after a month of steady downpours the ground is already starting to crack!! You just can't win!!!

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

GRR! I really really don't like rain.... tropical storm rains are no exception. Just found out my horseback riding lesson was cancelled for this evening because of the weather.

Phooey! Maybe the storm will rush by quickly .... let someone else have some of this rain ... Here in Greenville, we've had quite our fill, and are more than eager to share..

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

We are getting wind and pouring rain now! Little late don't ya think?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Here in the western NC mountains, it has been a steady rain since suppertime yesterday. No really heavy downpours, but it's a good test of all the drainage work I just had done on my house. So far, just a little water under the garage door, which I can easily fix with a new channel for the run-off. They say we will get the eye of Bill about 8AM tomorrow....

My heart goes out to all of you who have drowned gardens.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

So sorry to hear how Bill is making everyone crazy, now.

After yesterday, I'm thrilled to report blue skies and sunshine. The ground is still absolutely squishy, but at least the sun is shining!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

aHope all you Louisiana people are getting a little dry weather from now on. And hope your plants survive. My oldest son and family live in Baton Rouge. They have lived there about 25 years and luckily have escaped serious storm damage. Praying for all of you. Donna

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Thank you Donna for the well wishes. Sadly, the weather report is calling for more rain for the rest of the week. Our already soaked ground can hardly handle anymore. We recorded 7.4 inches of rain (all in one day)from Bill. Our total rainfall for the month of June was almost 18 inches. Here are some pictures from our local newspaper http://www.houmatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/tngallery?Avis=HC&Dato=20030630&Kategori=NEWS&Lopenr=630001&Ref=PH Some folks on the lower end of our parish really had a tough time.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh Lisa how terrible! Thank goodness you still have power as I believe many are without. My prayers are with you and all those other folk and their pets. Keep safe!

Monroe, LA(Zone 8a)

Hey sundry, thanks for looking out for me! You're too sweet! We did OK at my house. Luckily my street never seems to flood (knock on wood!). 2 blocks over is another story. I went to work Monday morning but they sent us home at 10 a.m. New Orleans and the surrounding area was hit pretty hard. Haven't seen a post from LauraM. She's in the suburbs. Some of them got hit pretty bad. I'm going to email her to make sure she's OK. So many people got water in their homes and others won't have power back until Friday. It could have been much worse. We're just all a little nervous here because it's so early in the season for a storm. I hope there isn't more to come! It was cloudy all day yesterday but no rain thank goodness! Hope Bill eases up wherever he's going! Mary Ann

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

I saw you posting on the other forums after I posted that, so I figured you were ok. But there's one of us missing? How uncool.
Guess we better post an APB for LauraM.
You are right, it's way to early in the season for this. I'm used to dealing with it in September, even August ... but JUNE? Really does not bode well for the rest of the summer.
On the other hand the worst storm we've had in decades was Andrew (1992) and that was the first named storm of the season, in late August. So maybe this is a good sign? *sigh* Who knows?
