Can you name this plumeria?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Susan, unless you want all your flowers to have that color-break virus, I would separate the one with the virus from the others. The virus is getting so bad in some places, that you can't find a flower without it. Bangkok, Thailand is one example of a place where the virus is rampant and destroying the beauty of the trees and flowers.

Susan, I highly recommend Florida Colors Nursery. I will only buy from FCN and Brad's Buds and Blooms. Your $45 plants seems very expensive to me. FCN has the same size and quality for $18-$25, and they are named cultivars.

You also might consider switching to plastic pots as plumeria roots tend to stick to the sides of clay pots, and clay pots cause the rootball to dry out too quickly.

Clare,
I do try to keep separate from others... I just all my rootings and cutting do well over winter and do great in spring....
Her name on ebay is deesplants
Thanks all for looking,
Susan

Clare,
I had to learn for I am new to this about the clay pots but since I had just gotten and planted them in them I did not want to disturb them again so I will put in plastic when I go to put out in spring... Clare do you plant in the ground or in pots? I am not sure what I am doing yet....
I do believe the Kolika ( I may be spelling wrong ) is now a named cultivar. She sells tons of diffrent cultivars. Her name is deesplants on ebay also...
Ok I just went to paypal and looked up how much I paid for the redrose or rose red... Brain dead here... :-) it was a total of 45....
Clare I know we all like diffrent things and it is just one persons liking but to me when I buy a plant I want a plant not just a stick that they took all the leaves off and send bare root.. I have gotten from Brad's Bud and very nice people but to me just not the same. The picture on the right of the 3rd one is one of his... I paid a total of 38.00 total for his... to me I paid 7 dollars more for a plant that not only is bigger but came fully leafted and this plant was 3 feet tall when I got it. may look small but is not.. It is also in one of the other pictures the second one... that is why I say I like her... I am not sure about Florida Colors Nursery for I never have gotten any from them so I cant say.. .Have heard good and bad things. Dee is a CN
So Clare what other type of plumerias do you have? I love to see pictures of them... Have you ever gotten from overseas? If so how were they did you like? There colors sometimes are so pretty.... Makes you wonder if they are real... Oh well who knows..... Clare where do you buy your plastic pots from? I have ordered off web now that I know not to use the clay pots.. but these are not as big as what I would need for planting the bigger ones up...
Hope to hear back soooon

Hi Susan,

I have my plumerias in containers and have around 500 or so. I could plant them in the ground in this zone, but I am a renter here and don't want to donate my plumerias to the landlord. I've already planted the landscape fairly tightly anyway with other plants.

I've posted several picture threads here this summer where you can see some of my pictures and blooms. Just go to the main forum and look for threads that I've started. Here's one: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/666904/ Here's another: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/661855/ You can also see my published articles at http://www.plumerias.com Look for Clare's Garden link at the bottom on the left under Plumeria Pals. If you click on the pdf version, you will see more pictures than the web version.

Yes, I import plumerias and have them from Thailand, Australia, and Singapore. My best friend lives in Thailand and has sent me my most treasured plumies, including purple, lavender, and violet plumerias. Thailand is at the forefront of hybridizing plumerias, and there are spectacular ones created all the time.

I get my plastic pots from my local farm supply store. Before that, I got the black plastic type at Home Depot. Many nurseries will sell slightly used ones for a very inexpensive price, and they only need to be cleaned. Here's one web store that sells them: http://mortonproducts.com/page.cfm/1480

Susan your plants are wonderful your doing great growing for such a short time ! I understand what you mean I'd rather spend a few extra dollars to get better quality too.
You should take a look at Plant files and see some of Clare's
Plumeira Photo's . Wow out of this World she must have zillions of them !
Us we only have two that have bloomed already and couple small ones from cuttings that got leaves last year but did not grow much or bloom. Maybe they needed more light or food ? I got them as a small cutting on a trade with some roots no leaves. They are just a foot or shorted now .
Clara I went back to Florida Colors Nursery. to dream and hoping I can afford one or two in the Spring :)) Which is best to buy grafted or stick. Do they sell plants ? Are they a good size when you buy them ?
We are able the lucky ones who can grow in the ground year round. Our one yellow flowering Plumeira we have had it for about 10 years and when we move we just take a cutting. It's always done well !

Violet, that's a really nice yellow. Florida Colors does have some rooted ones that they rooted after the hurricanes broke many branches, but they mostly sell cuttings or grafts. Whether you purchase cuttings or grafts is a personal preference. In the beginning, I liked rooting them myself and wanted to save a few dollars so I ordered cuttings. Now I prefer to order grafted plumerias to save the 90-day rooting process as it is only $3 more to order a grafted plant than a cutting. Grafted trees tend to be very strong growers with strong trunks.

Thanks, Susan:-) I started my collection with about 25 so you are well on your way!

Connie, I should have added a disclaimer when I said that your plumeria looks like my cultivar 'Playful.' You may know this already, but I better re-state it for you and others just in case. It is really difficult to identify a cultivar by a photo because it is important to compare other things as well, such as leaf shape, tip, and color; fragrance; growth habit, etc., and even if you put two cultivars side-by-side when comparing them, they can still be different due to different growing conditions. In your case, your cultivar actually looks like several that I can name: 'Playful,' 'Cancun Pink,' and one being called 'Loretta,' which isn't actually the real 'Loretta,' but a certain business is selling it as 'Loretta.' Whenever I have an unknown cultivar that looks like it could be a named cultivar, I usually still call it an unknown or a 'So-and-so Look-Alike' just for integrity's sake. It is really frustrating when you buy a cultivar, only to find out that it isn't that cultivar, and that is just one reason why names are important to keep straight.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

No problem. I only grow all plants for fun and when I share I don't profess them to be any particular name as it is not important to me.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi Weeds,
I am also like this.. If I like the color and can afford it I dont care what name it has or who's it's mamma... :-)
Susan

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Connie, I was doing some research today, and it turns out that the cultivar 'Playful' is actually 'Cancun Pink,' and was renamed by C-Stars Wholesale Nursery when it shouldn't have been. In any case, you can say that your pink is probably 'Cancun Pink.' It certainly matches in flower and petal shape and color.

I'm the same way in some respects. I have many unknowns that I absolutely love and that I got in trades, and I don't value them any less because they don't have a name. On the other hand, most of the time, a named variety is so unique that it can't be found anywhere other than from collectors and specialty nurseries. When you fall in love with one like that, you have to have it, and you are proud to have it have a name tag. Chances are that it cost a whole lot more than your other ones, but that is because you are paying for its unique qualities.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks OK so you mean the grafted ones have roots already > I'd rather not wait 90 days either .

Bradenton, FL(Zone 9b)

Boy its been a while since I've been here. All you guys from Virginia ans parts I have lived in , didn't own plumies there but have them here in Florida.

Weeds, I think your plumie MIGHT be Kona Hybird I say Might cause I cannot only predict it from where I am .

You guys in Virginia sure can grow Plumies my mother use to have one I took to here she lived in Chesapeake close to the water but still in Virginia. She would put it in the basement in the winter with the heater so it did fine my brother would carry it up and down for her till spring kicked in good but she had flowers on her of course Aztec Gold.
Will see if I can spend a little more time in here to get to know some of you guys.
I will see if I can find my picture of Kona Hybird.

Roger amazing to me people growing these plants up North WOW ! We sold our home next door to a man from Ohio. He says he's a tropical plant freak and wanted to move here where he could grow year round ! He brought many plants with him. His Plumeiras full of leaves and the size of them in pots put mine to shame . He arrived on Nov, 9th last month with some of the greatest plants ! HHH can't wait to see the colors and beg for a cutting. He has cool elephant ears large ones in pots ! We did leave him some in his yard when we moved along with Bomelaids, Coleus , Plumeira and many other plants. But it just amazed me of the plants he was growing in Ohio :))

Lindenhurst, NY

HI Violet - seems we love lots of the same flowers. Did you know there is a great supplier of plumeria's in Homestead? Florida colors. They sell grafted plants for only 20.00. I want a Miami rose from them but I'm on a budget and also need a plant stand for my a/v's :-)

And by the way, cuttings are very easy to root (if I can root a cutting anyone can). You can trade some of your a/v's for nice cuttings of plumeria, then you only have to pay shipping. I had a really nice lady on the forum here send me a cutting of aztec gold for just postage. It was a beautiful cutting that would have cost like 25.00 if I got it from a plumeria supplier.

HI Clare and others -- sorry to kind of hijack this.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes our yellow Plumeria plant has been with us for about ten years only taking a cutting when we moved ! But about ten years ago I gave my Aunt a cutting and her's grew like wild jungle trees taller than her mobile home ! Mean while I got sick and ended up in a Nursing home lost everything. Met Hubby he recued me and married me. Little oever 4 years ago my Aunt brought cuttings back from the same plant I shared back from my home 10 years ago :))
We have a red from a friend. She gave me a pink also but I gave it to a Nurse while it was small so we did not take a cutting.
I traded Gesneraids and couple Av's last Feb/March with Bob JungleBob and he sent me small cuttings. Three made it well each still only about a foot tall but they got lots of leaves and almost bloomed :))
When we moved I gave a neighbor friend one ! So we have two and no IDea what color they will be. Surprise ! Also gave her a 2-3 foot long 3 stick cutting each stick that long of our red plant and gave her some Bromelaids too :)) Were always sharing.
Oh left a small Plumeria and other plants for the guy who bought our home we just moved next door.
On my wish list is to be able to buy a grafted plant from Florida colors in Spring :))
But it's a wish Hubby first lost his job in August no reason of his onw . And we were on tight budget then. Then after a month he took another job for $3.00 less an hour. Then he got hurt and was out of work 7-8 weeks. Then Doctor said he could go back to work and now his new job from Sept. says they don't need hiom anymore :(( So were unemplyed again :((
But I never give up wishing or beleiving in Fairytales :)) Maybe by Spring I can get one ! I always hope for low Electric bill to get extra bucks !
We love growing them we love all plants !

Yes, the grafted ones are cuttings which have been grafted to two-year-old seedlings. Here's a good link: http://www.floridacolors.com/grafting_versus_cutting.htm Luc says that his plumeria trees that were blown over or broken in last year's hurricanes were all trees that were rooted cuttings to begin with. He says that his grafted trees were the strongest and did not break and were not uprooted. Seedlings in general have the strongest root systems and the thickest trunks. Here's a picture of one of my orders from Florida Colors one year. You can see that the root systems of the grafts are wrapped in Sphagnum Peat Moss and are protected perfectly during transit.

Hi Roger! It's great to see you here! Long time no see, my friend. I hope Laurie is doing good too.

Hi Maureen!

Roger, dear, I thought it looked more like 'Cancun Pink,' but who knows. It's hard to tell with a pic as I explained to them before. Here's a pic of Kona Hybrid: http://plumeria.digitaltexas.com/galleries/gallery.asp?action=viewimage&categoryid=&text=kona+hybrid&imageid=352&box=&shownew=
