Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Susie . . . I truely love these lessons.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Thank you, thank you, Susie. Your Brug seeds arrived safely and I will experiment with peeled vs. unpeeled seeds, as well as, wetness of paper towel, amounts of light needed for good germination, etc. I love playing botanist! :~)

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

Cala Can you spare some more seeds? I have been doing my own experiment except i have my seeds taped to my computer so far all but 6 have either rotted or there was nothing in them I thought it might be because i had my paper towel to wet I see maybe they were just bad Thanks

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

thank you, cala got my seeds today. i will keep you posted on progress. i'm sorry i forgot about mailing you postage will get it out tomorrow.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Susie! I bleached and peeled as I told you. The first type was started 6/29 and the second two types were started two days later. They are sprouting!!!! I still have to get to the others. I really gotta clean out the fruit cellar! I'm gonna be storing 200 or so by the looks of things! LOL I think I row ran about 150 seedlings/rooted cuttings from 2 inches to two feet tall. All the named ones are in beds. Now if I could just get a Y on something!! LOL My ears and nanners have really starting growing and everything else is taking off and blooming, thanks to the burst of heat and generous rainfall. I just want to say, I do not have a problem. :)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Chele, thanks! You are doing good with those!!
I have a question, do you have any fingernails left after peeling all those seeds?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Susie!! You forget, I have been pregnant and/or nursing since November of 92! I have 11 years of prenatal vitamins coursing through my veins. Oh yeah, I have nails! :)
OH, I forgot to say, I am just sewing them about 1/2 inch deep in seed mix. Then I set them out in the sun.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Susie, Julie just called me, the seeds are here! She's going to switch them to a new paper towel, and I'll get them on Saturday. None of them have sprouted yet, so she'll babysit them in their baggie until then. L'Amour x Butterfly, WOW!!! Thank you so much!

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

Just wanted to update on my own little experiment I put some seeds in pots in a garden soil mix in the shade and some in plastic baggies in the house on my computer three weeks ago none of the ones in the baggies have sprouted or even looked like they were germinating alot rotted The ones in the pots are just now coming up not all but a few One insignisPink x Becca Lynn sprouted (outside) two b.Gaultraum x Pink Beauty One solid gold X Isabella but I see where three more will be poping up in a day or two all of these where out side in soil left in the seedcoat maybe they will all do good and i will have some to share

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

springsong, i have my best luck just throwing seeds down on the ground in the fall. strange isn't it. i pulled up a lot of babies but replanted a few that have pretty leaves.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Calalily The seeds you sentlast year and the replacement ones still did not make it. I like your method its a lot better then what I tried to do. Keep up the good lessons
Ted

Bedford (DFW), TX(Zone 8a)

Howdy Calalily,
good news from Tejas.
I received 22 seeds of your Butterfly x L'Amour seeds on 7/7 in great condition, and 1 had already sprouted.
Of the 22 seeds...
I placed 12 in a mix of peat, vermiculite, and perlite, with a dash of earthworm castings, and rock phosphate.
One has has sprouted and has almost emerged her head from the soil.

10- I placed in a new baggie the Deno Way. And after noticing that 6 had germinated. Placed them in "soil" on 7/13.

4 are still in the baggie doing fine.

So....if there's any problem with growing them it's not in the seeds but a newbie's inexperience. To date, out of 22 seeds....7 or 32% have germinated.

thanks again for sending them and I hope to get a few going and will definitely keep you posted.

Calalilly thank you so very much for the seeds. Got them today and will put them in plastic bags and paper towel wetted w/10% bleach solution. Will put half on top of water heater and half on top of this monitor so I can watch them every day.

Questions for Susie, Kell, or anyone else with experience growing brugs from seeds: Do you soak the seeds in 10% bleach solution, or just rinse them with that after soaking in plain water? Does peeling the seeds after soaking increase the germination rate noticeably? Or is the main reason for peeling to separate the good seeds from the empty or rotten ones?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I did an experiment on peeling vs not peeling a long time back. I had better germination with peeling and soaking and a pre soak dip in a 10% bleach solution. This spring I tried Monika's method and had good germination without peeling.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I have my best luck with Monikas method also.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

OK, another stupid question... what is Monika's method? I don't remember her mentioning how to grow seeds in her book. It's probably in another thread here at DG, but I can't find it. (Sorry but I'm a relative newbie here!) I really appreciate your help and advice!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I think she did put threads on other sites, but now she or I are not members there,so I can not do a search for them. You may be able to search threads she has started here, and find one,it is always good to see her threads, she is truely our expert here on DG.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I found this in an old thread.

Edit

Just sterilize some potting soil with boiling water. Let it drain and cool off. Put the seeds on top of the soil and press them down so they make good contact. Slip the pot of seeds into that baggie, puff some air into it, and tie it shut. In about ten days, take a peek. You will be surprised and look.........you didn't have to buy anything you didn't already have around the house anyway. So far, it works better for me to plant brug seeds this way than any other way I've tried. Thanks Monika for the advice.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Brugie! I will try growing some seeds like that, and others with rockwool, and see which works best for me.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I did not do well with Rockwool. Some love it,some don't.

This seedling keeps getting longer.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Root, I don't have good luck with the rockwool either. I have much better luck doing it the Monika way.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

I had zero luck with rockwool. Monika's way was great!! That is going to be some big bloom there Root!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Did I miss which seedling this was? It is huge and so are the leaves!!! And look at the tendrils on her! ANTICIPATION!!! LOL A winner for sure.

OH how to germinate seeds.................... I do it differently every few months. I no longer soak mine at all but I do peel them. I love rockwool, get very good germination with it. But I will try Monika's method again in October when I am starting my seeds again. The same seeds from the same pod, both ways! It sure is cheaper! LOL. Last year I just did not get the germination rate I got with rockwool.

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Ten days back, I kept few seeds in wet paper towel, today I changed paper towel. After how many days these will germinate?
