NHE Rothkirch

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

I am happy that we are able to discuss things in a decent matter and it is exactly in that spirit that I suggested a cross between the two plants. As we both are aware of, this method has been suggested before to eliminate doubt about a Brugmansias identity as for instance Golfito/ Isabella, Junters Orange/ San Francisco/ Charles Grimaldi and Ecuador Pink/ Exotica Pink and won`t you agree that it would be a nice thing for all to know? :)

Aww...Thanks Alice!

I personally don't think we can tell from just pollinating this one whether it is the real Rothkirch or not as the one at Native Habitat is self fertile. Personally, I love this one and whether its just a darn good mimic or not I think its a keeper and one to breed with.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh really! LOL, you learn something new every day!!! Well then it will be easy to propagate for I understand it can be hard to root. Next year there should be tons of them available as bruglings. What fun!

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Eric, how come you always make me see the bright sides of things? *lol*

Alice, I just came upon my photo archives and thought about L`Amours color change in relation to Rothkirch. Maybe Rothkirch will change color when it really warms up. My L`Amour did that and did gradually from June to first in September. It started out being yellowish white changing to white with a shade of nearly invisible pink. The next flush had clear pink edges and them late summer it was close to red, but lighter close to the calyx. I will post the color change(s) is a new thread. No guarantees, of course, but who knows what Rothkirch decides to do in the next flushes?

If one wants to think about other Brugmansia that are apparently self fertile we need only think about Snowbanks. Its the only tetraploid and yet it has seedpods. As for Brugs that change colors or shades depending on the time of year/climate....Cypress Gardens is another Brugmansia listed as self fertile.

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Is that why NHE sells named Brugmansia seeds of this one and others? I have often been very close to order the large 75 $ seed packet.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Are they selling again? I will have go look. I can't wait for Alice's report.

FSH, TX

Now that one I don't know.

FSH, TX

Ahh, Kell just one thing...sorry...I should mention that self-fertile does not mean that seedlings will be exact replica's of the mother. So much for duplicating her. Cypress Gardens self crossed pods throw out generic white versicolors for example.

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

I wonder if a self fertile hybrid crossed to a different self fertile hybrid will produce some self fertile offspring?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I still think it looks like pulled taffy! While you all duke it out on whether it is the real deal or not, I'll just drool on my keyboard. LOL I don't even have the fake one. :)

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

I found more pictures of it. Now, Michele, we have to install the keyboards in bathtubs, so they don`t sail away, while we are drooling (I have just put a bucket under mine)*lol* Isn`t that just a wonderful, straight trumpet shape? :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Really Eric, how does that work? Wouldn't they have the exact same genes?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

ROTF Tonny! slobber slobber, I'll take ten! LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have a bud!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Figures!! LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

now remember Susie, no pollinating allowed.......LOL

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Yeah, your gonna' have to pack for your move sometime! Maybe don't move until you have that bloom and pollinate?
Can you talk your DH into that?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Hey, this little plant is still short, lol. I can wrap the whole thing in Butcher's paper, he will not notice that pod. It can ride right up front with me! Should I save pollen to put on it? Which pink one should I choose?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I could be all wet here, but didn't lots of special pinks come out of mixing r babies to r babies? Is L'Amour an R baby? Did some double pinks come from R?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Most of the R's..... Rosalie, Rosabelle....

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

I apologize I ran out of time today to not be able to post photos, etc.
I will do over the weekend.
But NHE assured me this morning this Rothkirch originated from Dr. Preissel.

Maybe it is my photos, my climate, etc, etc .. making it look not like others' RK?
I will post the deeper pink when back.
Alice

Susie, we have to hybridize some pocket-Brugs for you, but I am affraid that we will run out of time this time. btw. I have buds in a few of the Golden Hybrid x unknown father.

Kell, the R-babes is Hertha Blin and L`Amour is Emma Neu. L`Amour seem to have ... and I could be wrong here, because I don`t know the facts for this cross ... suaveolens genes. I think that Butterfly though, has the same genes as has the R babies and is also a Blin creation :)

Alice, please take all the time you need. The pictures is well worth waiting for and give me something to look forward to this weekend *lol* :)

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Hope you can find time for another pic. We will wait.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. I am like you guys, I enjoy everyone's pictures so much. It gives something for me to look forward to.............. LOL. Esp. now when I have not a brug in sight and hardy any plants at all. I potted up 3 big pots of different flowering plants for my Mom to look out at from her door but she got upset because she does not want to impose on her visitors to go out and water them. So I stopped. I was on a roll, I would have planted too many!!

So Alice, is Dr. Preissel the one that collected the euro R from the wild? He must have a huge place to have so many hybridizers working for him. Is he known for hybridizing other plants besides Brugmansias? People talk about him like he is a brug God.

That should answer your question Kell.

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Maybe he is God. HHG must be Brug heaven. Lene and I have dreamt about taking the train to Hanover, the camera and a lap-top do down load the movies, but it was not possible to find any reliable to look after the doggies. That`s a shame, because I wanted to shoot a video/ DVD movie of the place and its Brugs :(

(psssst! Maybe Lene could look after the doggies while I travel to HHG. Will ask her when she is home from her moms 90`s B-Day).

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Kell, want me to send you some budded un knowns for your mom?
They'd be there the next day

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh my goodness Eric, you mistake me for Susie........... LOL! But I will read it all since you were so kind to find it for me and perhaps I can get my brain to unfreeze long enough to comprehend.

Gee CC, you are a doll. How about just one for her house. She would be thrilled if it flowers for her. I will email you her address. Thanks so much. She will love it.

Tonny, I suggest you buy her a good welcome home gift, get some nice wine and light some candles and then ask her! LOL

Heaven ; ), Denmark(Zone 7b)

Kell, I will do thay anyway :)

btw. I found an introduction to Mendels law and plant genetics.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

WOW, tons of background here. As hard as I'm trying to reduce my bruglings, does any body have a start of Rothkirch? Thanks Scoot

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hah, Just like me, I cut back about 50% or so .

Wish I had done this sooner.

Now I can relax about wanting a 'Special' plant once in a while.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

It is beautiful Alice. It has such a feminine delicate look about it.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

This is a 2 year old thread

I bumped up for background info on controversial NHE Rothkirch.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Saying 'Hi" to All !

Someone told me I was posting on DG again. Huh ..???
So had to come to the forums to see.
And so I am !!! ... LOL

I am so busy anymore, I don't often get to all the places I should.
And with the newslettter not via email anymore, I forget.
I will try to do better.

RK is still a very favourite of mine.
Thanks for bumping.
Waiting for it to bloom again so I can enjoy and more hybridizings.

Summer was so hot here, brugs are just settling now to bloom.
What a weird year! ... )o:

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Alice, it was a weird year for most all of us.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Isn't that the truth. I had more blooms this fall than I ever thought of having this summer. It made the summer kind of boring.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Mine were late starting too, and I still have these in the yard. They're under a large oak tree so I guess that protects them from the frost. They're a little brown on the edges but still look pretty to me.
