i have been hearing talk lately about the illagalities of trading seeds and plants. i live in the usa and have read alot of things i just dont understand. is it illegal or is it for just some stuff.
please dnt hyperlink me to a site because all i want is in simple terms. those things i have been getting from my friends put out by the government is just to confusing to me.
i dont ever put seeds on my envolopes. i put like beads if anyone asks becuse some do shake but never seeeds. i have gotten alot that do say seeds on the package though.
either way i will continue to trade but just want to know whats up in simple terms. thanks
sorry if i opened a can of worms. thanks Imzadi
question
No can of worms and it's a subject that's been much discussed. Rather than send you a hyperlink (as you expressly wished not to receive), take a look in the International Trading forum here.
Technically, many countries require a phytosanitary certificate for plant material (and that includes seeds) that are on restricted lists. You can get into trouble sending seeds and plant material that are on the prohibited lists. In practise, most of our countries don't enforce phytosanitary certificates as a blanket and APHIS isn't exactly clear (to the layman at least) about whether it's a blanket requirement or a restricted list requirement.
If you do trade with other countries there will be times when the packet is inspected regardless of whether you site beads or craftwork etc on the customs form and they may be confiscated. A tip is to write the botanical name on the packets, if it's not on the restricted/prohibited lists it has a better chance of getting through than if it was just labelled with the common name.
It's irresponsible to send seeds that are potentially invasive to any country and it's a good idea to look on that countries Plant Health Authority site for the lists of what is and isn't allowed.
thank you. i havent traded out side the Usa ever so I just wanted to make sure i wasnt doing anything wrong in the usa. I have read alot of people getting plants taken and burned and then getting in trouble. just wanted to make sure. thanks Imzadi
Ahh you mean the White Paper. JJ Hudson has it on his website, it's well worth a read
Baa - could you give me the link please? I was attempting to find it myself and ran across this link
http://homepage.tinet.ie/~merlyn/seedsaving.html
It would take me days to get through the info, but I would love to have the JJ Hudson website you mentioned.
Thank EWE !!
