Zany, happy birthday to you! I wish I could write a poem like you do, but alas, no such gift is within my grasp.

GrannyLois, you may not write poetry but you manage to brighten the world anyway! I read on your poppy post that your DH is getting out of the hospital? I hope he is doing well and feeling better. This world needs its story tellers!

Happy Birthday To You!!!!

I hope the roses made it safe and sound :) Don't get wet waiting at the Post Office this time.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Lupy! I was going to Email you in a couple minutes and tell you they arrived this afternoon! Now I need to find out what a Honey Bell is! I mailed you a check for the postage along with the new Trish Who also needs to learn to come in out of the rain ;~)

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

The new Trish arrived, and has very sensibly stayed out of the rain. Of course, it hasn't rained here since, so that is easy! I am waiting to hear from Mingsmimi for her address, so Trish is just hanging loose :)

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

LUPY! You stinker...you once again ignored the part of my post about the "Honey Bell" bulbs you sent! What are they? Will they grow this year? Sun or Shade? Tall or short? You know I am already insane and now you are trying to completely send me over the deep end! LOL

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Zany, I am so sorrrrreeeee!!!!!

I have been away from the computer a lot lately (long story) so please, please, please forgive me!!!! I didn't ignore you on purpose!!!

I did try to e-mail you with info about the honey-bells; did you get it? This seems an odd forum to tell you about them, but here goes (this way I know you will get the info).

There are several Latin names and common names for these bulbs. They can be planted anytime, but will establish best if planted soon; roots will start to develop in late summer. Plant them 4-5" deep in a place that gets full sun during the spring.

The foliage emerges in early April, and the flower stalk starts to appear in early May. It grows to about 36" high, and at first it will look like some type of arum bud. The papery sheath will come off, and that will release the flower buds. The blooms are small, and arranged in a globular pattern. As each bud opens, it kind of falls down around the flower stalk, in effect making a circle of bloom, rather than a sphere. The blooms face downward, so if you want to see the colors, you have to lie on the ground and look up at them. I have never seen a photo that does any justice to the reality of this unusual plant. So gorgeous! And so unusual that everyone who sees them, wants them! Last year I gave bulbs to Gardenwife who fell in love when she was here visiting, as well as a few other gardening friends; some to two of my gardening sisters-in-law; and this spring I gave some to Windsurffer who saw them and fell in love.

These bulbs (as well as all others) multiply very quickly in my soil, probably because of the extremely high level of phosphorus, but it might just be their nature. I thin each clump down to 3 or 4 every 3 years, harvesting perhaps 20 extras from each clump.

The flower stalks, when dry, are as sturdy as bamboo poles, so I use them as stakes for a few of my short floppy perennials.

The only bad thing about these is the smell. Whew!!!! Must be why some authorities classify them as Alliums. Here is the PDB link: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/1832/

I thought, since I sent you roses, you ought to have some garlic (or at least a pretty flower in the garlic family :) After all, roses love garlic! And these bulbs grow well in containers, too.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Lupy, I really thought you were just being onery! Sounds like I planted them in the right spot then! Right next to where the rose trellis is going to be next year and in full sun. Do they really have a strong garlic smell? I hope so cause I just love the smell of garlic!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL You couldn't smell them when you got the package???? The post office workers held their noses when I brought the box in! Then they begged me for some more garlic!

(I wish I knew you didn't have garlic growing: I would have sent you some real garlic!) The best place to get garlic that will grow well in your region, though, is to go to a local farmer who grows it and buy a big bulb. That is how I got mine: a $0.25 bulb that has multiplied so much I call it "rabbit" ;D

Edited to say, "Ornery"???? Me????? *grin

No. I didn't smell a thing! But with this sinusitis that is not too suprising! As for growing garlic I just picked up a huge bulb at the grocery store of Elephant head garlic and the lady down the street gave me some of her wild garlic bulbs :~)

As for Onery .... yep...I know you can be evety bit as onery as I can and that means you are definately one onery gal!
