dried blood

Hello!

I have had good luck keeping deer out of my garden by sprinkling dried blood or dried blood meal around the perimeter of my garden in the Catskills.

Unfortunately, it washes away with the rain and is very expensive in small quantities at Agway etc.

Does anyone know where I can buy 10 pound or larger bags?

Thanks

Bulk bags of blood meal are available at some feed stores, or at a few mail-order places:

Peaceful Valley sells it in 5-pound boxes for $7.95: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/138/

Discount Gardening Supply sells 50-pound bags for $45.95: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/2779/

RoseCare.com sells 5, 15, and 50 pound bags: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/2780/

Ummm, when I started looking for this, I felt a bit like Alice slipping down the rabbit hole - along the way, I found several disclaimers and cautionary statements about companies refusing to sell to anyone knowingly using them to grow cannabis. Whodathunkit...figured I'd warn you in case you weren't thinking along those lines, either :)

LOL Terry! One of the ways the find Cannibis farms is by watching the purghases of PVC pipe, Grow lights and large generators in addition to blood meal, bone meal, and fertilizer. In fact every time I loaded up on garden supplies in town I could count on seeing the heliocopters buzz the place for a few weeks when we lived in the country! The odd part is I always paid by check and the pot growers ALWAYS pay with cash. I thought it was funny until I talked to one of the sherriffs here who said they get their best leads like that! So that makes every gardener or farmer suspect! The down side is that Big Brother is watching, but the up side is that you are less apt to be burgularized if the sherriff is constantly buzzing overhead!

Well, I guess it's not much different here, where buying sugar in 50-pound bags will raise the eyebrows of folks who know that moonshiners sure do go through a lot of sugar ;o)

I just never equated blood meal and other soil amendments/fertilizers with anything illicit. (It's a sheltered life I lead!!!!)

Terry - thanks for the leads!
