Zones

Dumb question for you all - but what zone am I in? I live in Waterbury. Connecticut. Forgive my ignorance being an English girl. I want to know what would be best to grow in a south south east facing clay soil in terms of herbs........

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

looks like a 6a maybe? Anyone correct me if I'm wrong

Have found that its 5! Now just want to check if I can grow something funky with my herbs like a curry tree?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Anything above zone 8 won't easily support the more off-beat (and typically tropical/tender) plants, goes for herbs too.

Also, most herbs do best in loose, gravelly soil, and will suffer if planted in heavy clay (I'm sympathetic to your plight, I've got heavy clay here, too!)

Something I saw on HGTV was a container herb garden, where the gardener purchased chimney tiles (terracotta rounded-corner square pipes, about 6" or 8" across), had them cut into 12-18" pieces, and burried them a bit in the ground, but left the bulk of the pot above ground. This allowed them to create a soil mix that herbs like, plant things like mint without as many headaches from those creeping roots and runners, and it could allow you to plant tender things that could then be lifted out and overwintered somewhere warmer.

These "containers" were spaced out about a foot apart, and a groundcover (liriope or something similar) was planted to surround them, which created a nicely-landscaped look. It was interesting and creative, and really looked nice.

Crossville, TN
